Okay, so I just paid @ $200 for a camera that I thought had @ 10MP capacity. That's what "they" said, after all. I realize that this is cheap for such a high quality camera, but it isn't name brand, so I figured that was the reason. I looked up reviews, and they were high.
AFTER I bought the camera, I looked for other reviews.
ALL OF THE SUDDEN THEY'RE REFERRING TO THIS CAMERA AS HAVING 3.1MP.
I KNOW that I could get a name brand, with at least 5MP, for less than $200.
Have I just been played for a fool?!
Is there any legal repercussion?
Does 10.0 Mega Pixel Max Dot Interpolated mean something goofy?! Is it like me selling "five pure bread horse" -looking creatures........ that are actually impotent mules?
Should I re-sell this junk and find something else?
Does someone have a GOOD camera that they'd recommend for @ $200?!

Please stop the obsession with mega pixels. Lens quality and CCD size are far more important

Fujifilm E550. It has 6.1MP and its only around $130 right now.
It is an amazing camera. Ive ruffed it up a great deal in the past 1 1/2 years and its done everything needed.
Great, inexpensive point and shoot.

Keep a look out for an old nikon or canon. Their high price denotes the fact that they hold their value.
I just got a Canon 400D and it is absolutely staggering

You did get ripped, but in my LIMITED experience, you don't need a shitload of megapixels unless you're going to be moonlighting as a National Geographic photog. I have a 2.4 MP Sony that I got like five years ago, and it produces nice pictures.

Don't tend to use flash indoors - better setting up some lights - bounce it off a board or a wall.
Virtually every modern camera will take satisfactory pictures in most light conditions.

The bad thing about digital cameras is that most of them don't let in enough light, so your flashing everyone and bleaching the fuck out of them. Look for a camera with a big lense operture the bigger the lense the more natural light and less freakish bleached out alien fish friend pictures.
I bought a NIKON Coolpix 5700, BADASS!

Unless she's blowing images up for a magazine or similar - it's not such a big deal.
A 150 DPI image looks pretty damn good - and if she needs to blow something up to more than that, her original shot was poor.

well mp's might be a big deal. i hafta blow pics up so i can paint them and crap. she might need them for something.
either way, play with everything you can. and read the features about the ones you liked online later.
that's what i did, and i love my camera. and i'm gonna kill whoever broke it.

Otherwise, CCDs are much of a muchness - mega pixels is not that big a deal. Concentrate on working with your colour and a sharp picture. That's about it.

If you want a good point and shoot, get a Canon Elph. I've had two, they have both been awesome cameras, and they're sexy, too.
As for you buying a generic camera, that makes you an idiot. If a camera is anything less than a D-SLR, then it shouldn't have that many.

My butterfly doctor friend only comes here to look at your posts I think Holly.
As far as cameras are concerned I have bought several recently to use at school. I have got various Cannon Ixus models, and they are OK (and I like them because they are silver). As far as I can tell, theres no need to get more than 5 or 6 million megapixels unless you want to blow the pictures up really big.

It's a combination of f-stop and ISO. Think of ISO as the sensitivity of the camera; determined by the smallest amount of light that can be allowed through the aperture (think f2.8 is the largest mine goes) and the speed of the shutter (ranges from .001+/second and 3+seconds). Most cameras allow you to program these in per the existing conditions, so if you prefer brighter shots you can set it at one stop higher than average, and darker shots one shot slower.
Generally, the bigger the aperture (more light) and the wider range of ISO (allows for more motion to be captured), the better off you are. 2.8 to 4.9 is a pretty good aperture range, and an ISO of around 50-400 is pretty good for the sort of camera you're looking to buy.
Only other thing is to ignore video stats (never seen a digital camera that could do a good job of video) and digital zoom. Do you have a National Camera&Video in your area? They often carry some amazing used stuff at good prices.
If you have any other questions, you can email me at icarus1987 (at) yahoo.com.

Digital Zoom is worthless. It's basically taking the image and expanding it, usually making it more pixelated (you can do that on your computer). Optical zoom is really the only thing that counts if you want clarity.

Dude, telescopic zoom is not digital. It's optical.

Oh, so it's a friend of c1ndy's? Cool. Well, I wish you all the best.
Whatever camera you get, just make sure you pick up a pack of rechargable batteries at some point, preferably sooner than later. Batteries burn up in cameras like they're going out of style and rechargables will be worth every penny.
Also, like I said, you'll definitely want a bigger memory card than the one that comes in that camera if you get it. It's only 16mb.
I'd try ebay and see if anyone has 512mb cards for sale where they've replaced them with 1gb. Might get lucky.

Shit, ok, one last thing... If you get that particular camera, it has software bundled with it that allows you to take panoramic pictures.
In other words, you can stand in one spot and take a bunch of different pictures in a circle and put them all together in the computer to form one continuous 360 degree image, a-la Creed videos. :P

I forgot to mention, another advantage of having a camera that can take short movies, besides the option to vidwhore yourself, is that if you're afraid you won't get the particular shot you want of something, like lightning or a hummingbird, for instance, you can take a short movie clip and take frames out of it for your pictures.

I think that's the one she's got. It's really pretty awesome! She got a GIG card for it and was shooting short films with it that looked pretty damn good. (You can see one of the films she shot on uber. It's the one with the lightning.)
It's got all sorts of neat color modes and effects you can do with it like time lapse, I think, and you can choose to shoot in black and white, or black and white and one particular color. For example, she was going around choosing the colors of flowers in my mom's yard and taking pretty striking pictures of the flowers themselves in full color (red for instance) while the background was all black and white. Kinda neat.
Good zoom range. 6 megapixels, which is really plenty. You don't need any more than that for web or personal applications. And that link has one that's really fucking cheap. Cheaper than she gave for her's I'm pretty sure.
If I were you, I'd get that and a 1 GB flash memory card to go with it and you'll be set.

Digital Zoom is worthless. It's basically taking the image and expanding it, usually making it more pixelated (you can do that on your computer). Optical zoom is really the only thing that counts if you want clarity.

Megapixels asn't as important as storage capacity and the expense of storage media. You can take good quality shots with a 3.1 megapixel camera and unless you are a professional photographer or something, which if you were you wouldn't be using a digital camera in the first place.
Look for quality of pictures, flexability of features, lag-time between photos, and ease of use over megapixels. Anywhere from 3-6 MP is fine.
That's my input, but I don't really know jack about digital cameras. :P
Ask FilthyAssistant. She got a kickass camera fairly cheap when she was here. Canon Sureshot I think.

I have no idea what he's talking re: storage capacity. Most come with some manner of flash memory, which is removable, rather like a usb jump drive. I think I have a 500MB one that went for $40 last year, and it can store around 150 pictures at 7MP. Just make sure you buy a card reader.

First, megapixels don't really matter a whole lot if the camera has bad shutter speeds. While every camera (and lens on an SLR) is different, the faster the available shutter speed in relation to whatever you want to deign a reasonable amount of light, the more you'll be able to compensate for movement (both yours and your subject's). 'Reasonable' can be anywhere from 60-1k+. Looks like that's about 18 or a 20.
You won't be able to get much reasonable at $200. Not at the 10MP range (why would you want 10? Planning on making billboards out of your prints?) Mine's a poor man's pro-amateur and it cost $1200 for 7MP two years ago. Would reccomend you look for a Canon or Nikkon 3MP in the $200 range. I think the Coolpix were a pretty good line, last I checked. Ask around, and ask to check the camera out (and see its pictures printed) before you buy it. Also, if you're going to test it, focus on a moving target like a car or person, NOT a stationary target like an in-store sign.

You also want something with a good zoom range. Whatever you do, don't get the ones that use mini-CDs as media. Those suck.
Get one That uses FlashROM and spring for a 1 GB or 512 MB card at some future point. They're worth it.

ETS/FA,
please tell me which camera you have.

Thank you,
Holly

Of all the camwhores I've seen in the last week, yours is the ONLY one who's made me re-work my rating process to the point where one is worthless due to the physically unimpressive factor.

Sounds like ya got ripped. I'd recommend Canon or Olympus.
But I'm not a photo guy.
