I've refrained from posting a lot of what I write for the sole reason I find it difficult to assume a universal voice capable of delivering the same punch world-wide as it would to those living within relative distance of the issues I speak of.
And because there seems to be much distaste for political issues - ETS is living proof of that.
The topic of this particular post may be seemingly irrelevant to most readers, but writing it from within a culture experiencing MORE American influence than most Canadian provinces, I hope you take the time to at least digest it, and identify with that which is familiar to your experience of everyday life.
Alberta is by far the richest province in Canada. And to most American's surprise - Alberta is you NUMBER ONE supplier of oil. Which, in essence, means we are backing your "War on Terrorism" in a fierce, fierce way.
Here's what most Americans DON'T know, and I can offer as a resident Albertan;
1. Because of our plutocratic government's ravenous and short-sighted need to create as much capital as possible for it's (few) elite members, the agricultural economy we thrived off for years is dead. Those willing to nurture, harvest, and replenish Mother Earth have been reduced to skeletons inorder to allow for mass drilling projects. Projects that strip the land of any future ecological potential;
2. There are communities in the northern area of our province that cannot even drink their water anymore due to pollutants pumped in the ground to extract oil. The water is flammable.
According to the Scientific table of Elements, water is one of the most effective ways to extinguish flammable agents.
Disturbing, to say the least;
3. Our economy is in such a (distorted) state of boom, the starting wage at Tim Hortons is $28.00/ hour to ensure we have enough labour to meet demand.
But we're laying off teachers left and right.
The wait time to see a doctor is months.
For any type of specialized service (IE - MRI to detect cancer) is close to a year.
If I want to work for an American oil company, I can make over $200,000.00 annually- irregardless of my scholastic background.
In this province, the stupid people get rich;
4. Small, privately owned companies are being forced to shut down because they cannot find enough employees to provide adequate service to the public.
But we have more people than ever rendered unable to work due to disabilities our social system is supposed to compensate, but unwilling to provide for (IE 4 months of physio) that would enable them to resume productivity.
And the rednecks here STILL cry for lower taxes.
I don't understand? The stupidity of sheeple never ceases to amaze me.
This is why Marx will always ring true;
A strong economy will alway arise from a strong social support system.
It's undeniable. A government willing to sacrifice social necessities for corporate gain will ALWAYS fail.
Labour = Capital
Labour requires a minimal level of basic needs.
What on earth is going on?
I live in a country that prides itself universally on it's attention to social issues.
But the educators are starving, our land is ruined, and we have a higher poverty rate than ever before:
BUT - Alberta had the second biggest oil reserve in the world.
Huh?
Our non-renewable natural resource base was sold off to the Bush Administration for a price that would astound any half-intelligent human -
at a ONE fucking PERCENT Royalty rate.
Our province pulls in more annually off of VLT's.
Does 9-11 make sense now?
Can you imagine what Bush's people are doing to the people in the Oil-rich East where the population isn't even given the civil rights allowing them to speak out as I am? To know what I know?
Caul - you claim your provincial government is supportive of a sovereign nation.
Here's the glitch that negates your Yankee hatred:
Quebec is the only province completely supportive of Harpers leadership, whom, by the way, is stoking Dubya's penis as we speak.

Errrr...yeah.
You cannot take pride in your citizenship, and hate Americans in the same breathe. Your provincial government's support is the determining factor in whether or not Canadians will succeed in remaining a people seperate from the U-S of A.
So far - it's not looking so good.
So until you're willing to protest against your own province, don't jump on the American hate wagon -
it's already Max Capacity.
Little known fact - Alberta's provincial government (The Klein Regime) recently enacted a Statute PREVENTING information related to actions of the governing party to be released to the public until 5 years AFTER the party has ceased their occupancy of office. So technically they WILL NOT be held publicly accountable for any fuck-ups.
How do you spell fascism?
A-L-B-E-R-T-A
Shout it out!!!
Hey Hey ya da ya da.
*sniff sniff*
Honestly? Nostradamus was a little off on some calls. But don't let his predictions slide. I think his thoughts regarding our untimely end may not be ill-found.
After all, the damage we are imposing on our environment spells disaster faster than you can say "Ignorant".
On that note - timeless words from a man well-aware of the impossibility of stopping the machine;

AMERICA
America I've given you all and now I'm nothing.
America two dollars and twenty-seven cents January 17, 1956.
I can't stand my own mind.
America when will we end the human war?
Go fuck yourself with your atom bomb
I don't feel good don't bother me.
I won't write my poem till I'm in my right mind.
America when will you be angelic?
When will you take off your clothes?
When will you look at yourself through the grave?
When will you be worthy of your million Trotskyites?
America why are your libraries full of tears?
America when will you send your eggs to India?
I'm sick of your insane demands.
When can I go into the supermarket and buy what I need with my good looks?
America after all it is you and I who are perfect not the next world.
Your machinery is too much for me.
You made me want to be a saint.
There must be some other way to settle this argument.
Burroughs is in Tangiers I don't think he'll come back it's sinister.
Are you being sinister or is this some form of practical joke?
I'm trying to come to the point.
I refuse to give up my obsession.
America stop pushing I know what I'm doing.
America the plum blossoms are falling.
I haven't read the newspapers for months, everyday somebody goes on trial for
murder.
America I feel sentimental about the Wobblies.
America I used to be a communist when I was a kid and I'm not sorry.
I smoke marijuana every chance I get.
I sit in my house for days on end and stare at the roses in the closet.
When I go to Chinatown I get drunk and never get laid.
My mind is made up there's going to be trouble.
You should have seen me reading Marx.
My psychoanalyst thinks I'm perfectly right.
I won't say the Lord's Prayer.
I have mystical visions and cosmic vibrations.
America I still haven't told you what you did to Uncle Max after he came over
from Russia.
I'm addressing you.
Are you going to let our emotional life be run by Time Magazine?
I'm obsessed by Time Magazine.
I read it every week.
Its cover stares at me every time I slink past the corner candystore.
I read it in the basement of the Berkeley Public Library.
It's always telling me about responsibility. Businessmen are serious. Movie
producers are serious. Everybody's serious but me.
It occurs to me that I am America.
I am talking to myself again.
Asia is rising against me.
I haven't got a chinaman's chance.
I'd better consider my national resources.
My national resources consist of two joints of marijuana millions of genitals
an unpublishable private literature that goes 1400 miles and hour and
twentyfivethousand mental institutions.
I say nothing about my prisons nor the millions of underpriviliged who live in
my flowerpots under the light of five hundred suns.
I have abolished the whorehouses of France, Tangiers is the next to go.
My ambition is to be President despite the fact that I'm a Catholic.
America how can I write a holy litany in your silly mood?
I will continue like Henry Ford my strophes are as individual as his
automobiles more so they're all different sexes
America I will sell you strophes $2500 apiece $500 down on your old strophe
America free Tom Mooney
America save the Spanish Loyalists
America Sacco Vanzetti must not die
America I am the Scottsboro boys.
America when I was seven momma took me to Communist Cell meetings they
sold us garbanzos a handful per ticket a ticket costs a nickel and the
speeches were free everybody was angelic and sentimental about the
workers it was all so sincere you have no idea what a good thing the party
was in 1935 Scott Nearing was a grand old man a real mensch Mother
Bloor made me cry I once saw Israel Amter plain. Everybody must have
been a spy.
America you don're really want to go to war.
America it's them bad Russians.
Them Russians them Russians and them Chinamen. And them Russians.
The Russia wants to eat us alive. The Russia's power mad. She wants to take
our cars from out our garages.
Her wants to grab Chicago. Her needs a Red Reader's Digest. her wants our
auto plants in Siberia. Him big bureaucracy running our fillingstations.
That no good. Ugh. Him makes Indians learn read. Him need big black niggers.
Hah. Her make us all work sixteen hours a day. Help.
America this is quite serious.
America this is the impression I get from looking in the television set.
America is this correct?
I'd better get right down to the job.
It's true I don't want to join the Army or turn lathes in precision parts
factories, I'm nearsighted and psychopathic anyway.
America I'm putting my queer shoulder to the wheel.

I make my money from Oil, but there is a damn good chance that you do too.
You should not condemn an area because they happen to control the production of a commodity that is demanded on a worldwide scale, for multiple purposes...
Alberta may have its flaws, but it is still a damn fine place to live. If you don't agree, take your white unwashed ass to somewhere like Somalia and tell me you think it's better there...
People who whine and take no action to improve their condition really piss me off.
People like you.

It's funny how my acknowledgement of the NEGATIVE Aspects of Oil Production offends people so greatly.
Alberta is an absolutely wonderful place to live. So wonderful, in fact, it pains me to see that jeopardized. With production levels remaining what they are - and ultimately INCREASING to unheard of levels by 2015 - preserving Alberta's natural state of beauty will be impossible.
I do not work in an area even remotely associated with oil production. Actually - I'm on the other end. You know nothing of my livelihood, nor where I put my spare energy.
You should consider that idea before you get so loose with the expletives

That's four times less.
Also, I've been exchanged in Ontario for a summer when I was 16, the county was called Simcoe North. Now THAT'S Texas. I've been forced to listen to extremely cheesy music, seen exagerated patriostism AND I went to...church.
My theory is that all english Canada (except for the big cities) is New Texas. Only, canadian population lives mostly ion big cities, so it doesn't show much to other countries.

FYI = Irregardless is a word that many mistakenly believe to be correct usage in formal style, when in fact it is used chiefly in nonstandard speech or casual writing. Coined in the United States in the early 20th century, it has met with a blizzard of condemnation for being an improper yoking of irrespective and regardless and for the logical absurdity of combining the negative ir- prefix and -less suffix in a single term. Although one might reasonably argue that it is no different from words with redundant affixes like debone and unravel, it has been considered a blunder for decades and will probably continue to be so.

======
I have no idea what you're talking about.
First of all, our current provincial government is NOT supportive of Québec as a sovereign nation. The Liberal party is very much a federal party. So I don't see your point.
Second, my Yankee hatred is mostly for entertainment. While I do find that American tourists are notably retarded, my actual opinion of Americans is not much different from the one that I have of my own people. We're not very different after all. You'd be suprised if you spoke with me in reality. My Uber theatre helps singling out americans like loki who claim to be intelligent and open-minded when they are in fact stupid and closed-minded. In reality, I actually defend Americans (suprise!) and it's amazing how quick I can point out which french-canadian around me is an anti-american patritiotic tard. Controversy brings out the worse in people. With that said "DOWN WITH ALBERTA!" :-)
Third, the impacts on your society of conservatives politics you spoke of are in majority due to your own provincial leadership. Don't mix cards. Harper has been office for little time and while he executes himself at an amazing speed, I doubt he's responsible for these things you mentionned. Personally, I am glad that the federal government is conservative. So far, the Liberal party has done nothing but alienate and cheat Quebecers and therefor reopen this redundant national unity debate. And most importantly, Québec is way too socialist. It's getting out of hand and we're moving backward. Sure we have one of the best quality of life and evenly distributed wealth, but many aspects of our infrastructures is crippling, even with Albertan money being transferred into our budget.
Fourth, while you may or may not agree with Harper's politics, you shouldn't be scaremongering either. This massive military spending and Bush cock-sucking might look like an erosion of our sovereinty but keep in mind that this is a minority party that can be booted out any day - as soon as Liberal regroups of course. Plus, unjustified Canadian pride (whoopdeedoo! we rock at hockey! go us!) and subtle anti-americanism has been pumped so much into our head during the liberal dynasty that being friendly with our most important neighbor, trading partner and number one power in the world makes people feel uneasy...figure THAT one out.
Fifth, I ate so much curd cheese in various little towns during my vacation that my excrements are all spongy.
This is my...*counts on finger*...5th or 6th serious reply on Ubersite! :-D

You are tying your problems with Canada to some US conspiracy in 9/11?
If it was a long thought out pretext to invade Iraq, why not have the hijackers be from there? Better yet why even invade, why not give him the arms and food to keep his people under his boot forever and just buy the oil. It is a lot cheaper than going to war and would actually give us more oil, which isn't happeneing yet is it? Funnny how the masterminds behind such great plots and such clever manpulators of public opinion can't calm down a bunch of towel heads long enough to pump out some oil.

There isn't particularly a dislike of political discission on here, there been some good ones.
But its been difficult to do recently with ETS sending them up so effectively.
I'm torn, you seem like you're arguing very good points very badly. Try being calmer.

Outstanding observations!
Sad that this type of narrative and biting commentary on how truly messed up our reality has become will get dismissed as partisan liberal Hippie nonsense.
Which really cramps up my taint.
I don't understand how otherwise intelligent people are prone to dismiss such infuriating stupidity and ignorance... except to say that at the core of humanity we are flawed.
Our civilization encourages waste and the free market dictates almost all of our economic decisions- even though things like education, healthcare, and ESPECIALLY environmental issues will never be properly, honestly, addressed with our current ideological system.
I think simply identifying the issues is not enough, not anymore. People have been doing that for years and the situation is getting exponentially worse... more and more people are becoming aware- and have the good sense to actually give at least some sort of shit... but corporate greed and nationalistic hubris will continue to spin out of control until "we", the people do something about it.
We need a change- and in a big massive "lets all hold hands and change the world" kind of way. Radical, revolutionary change.
SO... any thoughts on how to bring that about?
r.
(Personally I think Canada is a great place to start enacting any sort of real plan- we only have 30,000,000 million people to educate and organize - especially when you consider the natural resource base/general wealth of the nation and the socialistic tendencies that are already embraced by the nation.)

The stupidity of sheeple never ceases to amaze me either.
This one time I saw a sheeple trying to ride a bike through a hill.
Another time I heard that this sheeple that lived round the corner from me tried to eat an Aeroplane...a FUCKING aeroplane...I said to the guy that told me "That sheeple is fucking stupid"
This other sheeple I know tries to blow bubbless with the oil from his car through a playing card. Personally I don't think you can get much stupider than that.
Yeah man... The stupidity of sheeple never ceases to amaze me.
