I'm German and French Canadian (mostly German) so I guess because Germany isn't in the final I have to root for France. I probably would anyway though because the best soccer player in the last 30 years is on their team, ZIDANE!
1st half:
Well at the beginning of this game the golden ball is revealed. Although I have seen it before, seeing it out there on the grass is something special. Things start off with Thierry Henry running full steam into the Italien horse, Cannavaro. Fears of a concussion are strong in the fans and myself. but he appears to be all right after coming back in a few minutes later.
Things get started off quickly when Malouda gets touched in Italy's goal box and turns that into a penalty kick. Who to take it? None other than the world's greatest, Zinedine Zidane. He tries something tricky, and chips it to his right side, where it hits the crossbar, bounces almost straight down. Just far enough over the line to count as a goal.
France: 1 Italy: 0 at about the 6 minute mark.
First time that Italy has been behind this world cup, and the first goal actually scored against them, although it was a PK (we'll see if France can really get one past Buffon).
Italy counce back just 12 minutes later off of a corner kick. Marco Materazzi towers over the French defense and pounds the ball into the back of the net, right past a flailing Fabian Barthez. This dominance on corners by Italy will continue for the rest of the first half.
For the rest of the first half, nothing really all that special happens. We'll see what's in store the second half, this is really turning out to be a great game of soccer.
2nd half:
Nothing really huge happens in the second half. Although France controls most of the play.
Zidane gets a shoulder injured, but decides that he can make it the rest of the game after initially giving the sub sign from the ground after he was hit.
Italy scores around the 60th minute, but the goal is called back because the Italien player was offside.
This half ends with the score the same as it was at halftime: France 1, Italy :1.
And we're on to overtime--we'll see if Italy can pull something out of their asses like they did against Germany, and beat the frogs.
Overtime:
Some huge things happen in these 30 minutes.
Zidane lays a ball to the outside, it gets crossed back in to him and he blasts a header towards the goal only to be denied by an amazing stop by Buffon, the Italien goalkeeper.
But, the biggest thing that happened involved Zidane as well. He head-butted Marco Materazzi and got sent off. Such a horrendous thing to do for a player of that caliber. What a great way for the world's best to end his international career.
Now I want Italy to win, and I think they are going to. Buffon their goalkeeper is amazing, and France does not have Henry (substitution) or Zidane (red card) to take a kick for them
ITALY WINS ON PKs! THey sink ALL 5. I knew it. Fabian is a horrible goalkeeper.
It's been said that even the geat America has gotten a liking to it. ESPN reported that more fans watched the Italy vs USA game than the Stanley Cup Final (That's hockey in case you were wondering). Same goes for the US Open.
Here's how it is: my grandparents have no idea what soccer is, my parents have somewhat of an understanding, and I love it more than anything. As the older, more ignorant generations die out and the younger ones start to take over, soccer will soon have a huge impact on the culture and lives of Americans. I even saw former president Clinton on TV, at the stadium in Berlin.
Soccer is taking off in America, and there's nothing the fat idiots who love football can do about it.
Move over John Madden.

The fact that the French keeper didn't stop a single penalty kick was disappointing. Now that I think about it, I didn't see him stop one during the game either.

Ribery - car crash. Face rebuilt. Badly. Now starring in Hunchback on Notre Dam with Raymond Dommenach as the chief villain.
Tevez - ugly Argentine thug. Simple really. His chin is massive. Massive.

Tell you who else disappointed me. Franck Ribery. How come he never headbutts anyone? The mere sight of Quasimodo rearing to smash you in the chest with his face would be enough to send anyone screaming for the dugout
===================================
What the fuck happened to his face like? It looks as though someone tried to cut it off. Same with Tevez, it honestly looks like someone tried to cut his head off, or at least slit his throat.

Soccer has a little following for about 3 months after EVERY world cup. Come October nobody in America will care who the fuck Zidane is.
The headbutt was pretty badass though.

Surprising that your american perspective isn't "Har Har! France surrendered LOLOLOL!"
Though I suspect FoxNews will make a segment about it tomorrow, somehow linking Italy's contribution to the Iraq war and France opposition to the outcome of this match with subtext like "It's karma, beetchez!"
Nice résumé. I missed the final. I was visiting foie gras and cheese factories on l'Île D'Orléans....mmmmmmmm

aghh, we could see fucking game. Also, Zidane headbutting that guido was the pimpinest thing ever in world cup history.
I guess, if I was French, I'd feel a modicrum of shame, but I'm not, so I think Zidane went out the coolest way possible.
