I found out that in Kentucky, in order to get a permit to carry a concealed weapon, all you have to do is pay a fee, take a class, and pass a test.
Seems all too easy right....of course my first thought was 'where do I sign up?'
Anyway, that's not what this post is about.
What it IS about is a topic that my friends and I discuss time and time again.
You see we do a lot discussing music and we represent many genres and musical tastes, from The Grateful Dead to Fear Factory to Mazzy Star to John Lee Hooker....we've got pretty much all bases covered.
The one topic that we always come back to, mainly because it isn't genre specific, is what was the greatest debut album of all time?
Now on initial thought you'll immediately think of something that you hold dear, be it something from high school, college, childhood, what have you.
But if you think a little deeper about it there are albums that you might 'know of' that were actually better debuts. In and effort to make fair conversation we try to stay unbiased and think about popularity, sales, how the band is remembered, and of course quality of the music.
So this is a bit of the list we've come up with (not necessarily in order) and I was wondering if you all had some thoughts on this one?
Surely with how diverse it is here at uber you'll either have something to say on the albums I've listed or you'll have something to mention that I haven't listed.
The Who - My Generation
David Bowie - 1966
Pearl Jam - Ten
Guns 'n Roses - Appetite For Destruction
The Sex Pistols - Never Mind The Bollocks
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced
The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
The Ramones - The Ramones
Metallica - Kill 'em All
Pink Floyd - Piper at the Gates of Hell
The Beastie Boys - License to Ill
Bruce Springsteen - Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ
Elvis Presley - Elvis Presley

Actually The Who kick ass as well as Deep Purple, I haven't heard much of their debut, Shades Of Deep Purple , but Ian Gillian's debut on "Deep Purple In Rock" is great, the various screams through out are great, so truthfully any album with "Child In Time" has to be good.

And am I the only one who never saw Pearl Jam and Nirvana having much of anything in common except for flannel shirts?

This guy is the man, I'll second his comment.
But my choice would be Hanson "Middle Of No Where"
WHAT?! They were the hottest 13 year old girls at the time?
Actually I'm kinda bored of Hanson jokes, it's always the same one about how they look like girls, but Chuck Norris, he's a legend.

God, this is tough...
I've been thinking about it for like, a day and a half now.
But I have a question, and it might have already been answered...
Greatest debut as in first album of the bad, or greatest debut as in first major label release?
Because I have 2 different answers for those...

A) This post turned to shit- whomever said it turned into "My Favorite Album" list is spot on.
B) Whoever said "Pink Flag" by Wire should be nominated for "Uber user who no one has ever heard of but is smarter than 99.9% of the rest of Uber".
3) I wish that Wire fan had a vagina but somehow I doubt it.
D) I wanna be a field day for the Sundays so they can fuck up my life...marry my sife...and leave a bad taste....that striped toothpaste can't remove on Monday morning.

you're really complicating this in your little mind aren't you?
In order to achieve the prize you have to have both the music and popularity
that's why when you get down to the top 10 or maybe 5 debut albums of all time they both rock and have high rankings in over all sales.
You're trying to force an arguement that isn't there man, yes good music is the key but to be the best ever its not the only ingredient.
Or should we stand here and throw shit at each other all night...I mean I'm down, its been a shitty day.
-----------------
Ok, I cant be fucked with a shit-flinging contest, but I have got to say that I could never ever agree with "good music is the key but to be the best ever its not the only ingredient" because that's just bullshit. But it's something I would definately expect from someone who rarely goes to the effort of looking past "mainstream music".
It's simply fucking ridiculous to go by overall popularity, because then you basically narrow it down to only the genres of Rock, Hip-Hop, RnB, and Pop, because that's what the majority of people listen to, because that's what the record companies shove down our throats, and MOST people dont look outside these genres because it's easier not to.
Of course, it also depends on your definition of "Popular" as well, I mean, sure, "Bad Company U.K - Inside the Machine" is probably something 90% of people have never even heard of... BUT 100% of people into Drum & Bass have heard of it, and I'd say a good 90% of those would agree that it's probably one of the most influential and plain awesome debut albums ever in D&B, along with "Roni Size - New Forms". So in that respect those two albums are HUGELY popular. But you only go by the "mainstream music listeners" and ignore those who actually develop their own taste, rather than just go with "whatever everyone else is listening to".
And if you think I'm "trying to be cool by not listening to what everyone else listens to" then you're still missing the point.
But I'll give you a 0 instead of a -2 anyway.

idiot, you're still looking at or talking about stuff that has come out recently.
think about it moron, Led Zepplin, Hendrix, Police...do think the are listed here because they are shit?
NO because over time just about 905 of the population has heard them.
Don't blame my list because you can't think past the New Kids or some other bullshit.
The greatest debut ever means the band got popular, people liked them, the became known and sold more albums, became part of our culture.
And since you brought it up, Britney Spears is part of our culture, like her music or not it's still the truth.
But that's why these lists will always be dumb to YOU because you can'tget your head far enough out of your ass to get past what YOU like and think about the music or albums overall effect.
------------------
Thanks for completely missing the point you fucking dolt.
I'll explain it in simplified little words so you can follow:
The Greatest Debut album of all time has fuck-all to do with popularity, it's to do with talent and GOOD MUSIC.
If you intended this to be about popularity you should have said "what's the most popular debut album of all time" or "what's the most popular pile of talentless garbage of all time" They are interchangeable.
I'm sorry for you that you are so clueless about music that you dont understand the difference between what's GOOD, and what's POPULAR.
P.S I've NEVER EVER rated "The Police"... Sting can go suck the shit out of a dead dogs ass as far as I'm concerned.

-------------------
That really really doesn't mean fucking shit.
If we went by what "90% of the population" thinks the winner would be something fucking horrible like Britney Spears first album or some crap.
90% of the population know fuck-all about music and just listen to whatever crappy pop shit is force-fed to them by the mainstream media.

I disagree with the Radiohead one there actually. It's not a brilliant album. It is solid.
I think Pablo Honey is actually pretty weak. There are zero implications of their brilliance to come and I think I read somewhere that even Radiohead themselves are embarrassed they made it.

Boston's Debut Album is still the best selling debut album of all time for a reason.

Radiohead - Pablo Honey

I disagree with the Radiohead one there actually. It's not a brilliant album. It is solid.

Sully, totally forgot about Black Sabbath, I mean no one was doing what they were doing when they came out....good call

^Fucking outstanding.
King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
The Shins - Oh, Inverted World
The B-52's - B-52's
There's no question in my mind that the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Led Zeppelin had the strongest debut albums of any band ever.

Pablo Honey was good
I tend to lean towards either Pearl Jam, Guns 'n Roses, or Metallica....those albums put certain things on the map.
--------------------------
No Nirvana on that list? I always thought they kind of paved the way for Pearl Jam. Maybe I just remember Nevermind before 10. they weren't really all that similiar but they were the first in the nitch left behind by hair bands and "metal" fading.

it's the same law in texas. my pops took the class, paid the shit, and now he can carry whatever he wants, whenever he wants. the catch is that the gun has to be TRULY concealed...if there's a bulge, or any hint of a gun there, it's illegal. weird, they condemn you for your firearm being able to be seen. seems paradoxical.
i like your list, but i think you only put the floyd one on there cuz barrett (sp?) just died.

It's "Piper at the Gates of Dawn", by the way. Your music posts always suck me in.
Kill 'em All and Licensed to Ill are two of my favorites.
"Little Earthquakes" by Tori Amos was not top 40 and I'll get slammed for it, but is fantastic. Rage Against the Machine's self-titled, as well.
I'll be back.

A few I can think of:
Rage Against The Machine -Rage Against The Machine
Creedence Clear Water Revival - Creedence Clear Water Revival
Kings Of Leon - Youth And Young Manhood
Black Crowes - Shake Your Money Maker
The obvious one:
The Doors - The Doors
It's all just opinion though, ergo, a load of bollocks.

A few off the top of my head
Oasis - Definitely Maybe
Hendrix - Are you experienced
Velvet Underground - Velvet Underground & Nico
The Doors - The Doors
The Kinks - The Kinks
Little Barrie - We are little Barrie
Kasabian - Kasabian
Beck - Mellow Gold.
But I think they are just knee jerk choices, I'll ponder some more......
*Goes off and ponders*

Avenged Sevenfold - Sounding the Seventh Trumpet was pretty good, but I'm not sure it's the best debut.
Or maybe Adrenaline by Deftones.
But then again New American Gospel (Lamb of God) was awesome too.
Also Godsmack, by Godsmack. And hundreds others. Hard to think. I've been to the pub

I tried to have sex with a mexican once. She had just fucked my friend the week before, and we were all hanging out in the same room with me and her fooling around. He left the apartment to try to get some sleep in his car, so I left her and me and my friend got Denny's.

When we get together my friends and I pick a letter of the alphabet and name bands that start with that letter (or have The and that letter). First person to lose three times buys pizza and beer.
