He watches her while she sleeps.
She's always such a grump when she first gets up, but he loves that first little smile when she rolls over and realizes who's next to her. That smile is one of the reasons he knows. He absolutely knows, with his whole heart.
He's hoping the morning goes as he plans.
It's raining, but that's okay. The cottage they're staying in has a tin roof...and there's nothing quite like the sound of rain on a tin roof. Calming, gentle. He knows he can make her laugh later, jumping in a puddle, and despite her fake protests, dragging her in.
He looks at his jeans.
In one of those pockets he's holding his hope. Hope for a promise, for a future. To hold on to her, to know she's his forever. To him, love is a thing that goes on long past any death. The knowledge that she be willing to make a promise to him would let him know that he had her heart forever. Though he loved her words, the action in the promise would make them concrete.
He turns back to the bed, and remembers.
Their first kiss. How all the cliches became true as the fireworks started, as time stopped. How their friendship had let her trust him - let her share dark secrets about past hurts to him. Their first fight. And how her tears made him cave in, even though he hadn't wanted to admit it to himself.
He loves.
Without consequence. With knowledge of the past, with all of his problems trusting, she had been able to trust him. In her actions, he'd learned a new trust, a new comfort, a new feeling. He wasn't alone anymore.
She wakes.
