I stayed where I was, the moisture from the grass wetting my forehead only slightly more than the moisture from my tears were wetting my cheeks.
I could smell the earth, swirling around in my nostrils, taking me away from where I really was.
The earth and the grass, that distinct smell that you can't help but like. It was reminiscent of my youth; it threw my mind back to better times.
To sunlight and days that lasted for ever, to smells and stains, to setting fire to things, to running away. Scrapes and bruises.
Smells...oh the smells. In those days even air had a familiar smell, it was nice.
Grass smelt good, cut grass even better, flowers (of course), but so did melting tarmac, and car exhausts, fields of rape. Fuck me, even the morning and then the evening had distinct smells.
Nowadays I catch a fragrance that reminds me of something. Sometime I can't match it so I only know it was something I used to smell all the time and that makes me sad.
Other times I know straight away, I smelt a stream the other day and it triggered the right cells in my brain...fishing with Sean. The river behind my house.
Perhaps we are more perceptive to smells when we are kids, maybe we care more or have the time to savour....we are all convinced that we're so busy nowadays.
Too busy to sniff though? That I doubt.
Perhaps we live in a world where things don't smell anymore. It this washed out, consumer suited world where we buy out deodorants and air fresheners from a tin?
I doubt it and I hope not.
I also hope that grass and earth...the smell that followed me everywhere I went when I was an infant, from railway tracks to woods, from streams to cornfields will stay just that...my trigger to my youth not a reminder of Sean's funeral.
