The engine purred softly as I eased my foot off the accelerator, coasting slowly to a half alongside the concrete walkway lining the right edge of the usually bustling city street. Tonight, however, it was desolate. There were no bleary eyed hobos pushing stolen shopping carts, no patrolling insomniacs, not even a drunk. It was concrete, cold and real.

A cool breeze coursed through the open top of the beige '72 Oldsmobile convertible. It was late, but it felt awfully early. Time had been playing tricks all night. At times it would slow to where I became afraid to blink while I drove, the back of my eyelid lingering too long where it should not. At times it had gone too fast, and I would suddenly find myself at unfamiliar intersections, far gone from my last memory.

I checked the clock on the car's radio. It was still blinking midnight. I wasn't sure when that had started, but it had been midnight for as long as I could remember. It wasn't so much a lie though. Life on the highway was always midnight. Always caught somewhere between one day and the next, hanging precariously over the edge, waiting for the ground to give way, to slip out from under your very feet. It wasn't so much a black or a white, but a gray. A blur, really. I never felt truly asleep, but yet again, I was never really awake. It was religious at times, all-knowing, spiritual. For the most part though, it felt more like heresy. It was never really the full truth, but then again, it was even less of a lie.

I turned the key to the left. The purring stopped. I removed a Lucky Strike from my breast pocket and placed it between my lips. It hung carelessly there as I struck a light, inhaling the smoky respite deep into my lungs. It burned sweetly, but it passed almost instantly. I was running low. My head ached, pulsating in dull pain. I popped a couple pills. Hopefully the speed would keep me until dawn.

Pushing my Ray-Bans up onto my forehead with one hand and cradling the cigarette with the other, I noticed the eerie light of the street lamps playing across the dashboard of the convertible. It reflected somewhat, dimly illuminating the silent figure sitting beside me.

She was pretty, really. A brunette with long wavy hair and eyes which sparkled with insatiable curiosity. Of course, they were closed now. She was drooling. I grabbed a tissue from the back seat and wiped the blood from her nose. I wasn't sure if she was dead. I didn't check. I didn't really care. She was a good fuck, but I wouldn't miss her. They're all the same, really. You give them a taste and they just keep coming back. They've all got it in them, that unending human curiosity. The desperate need to understand, to be God. It was spiritual. It was sin. It was addicting.

More than the drugs.

I left her outside her apartment with the key in the door. There was something about this girl which told me her apartment would depress the shit out of me, so I stayed outside. She was propped up against the door. She looked grand. I even lit her a cigarette.

I drove away alone, but not particularly lonely. It was only a matter of time though.

I checked the clock. It was still midnight. I figured it was going to be midnight for awhile now.

Karl: You don't belong here. You're a fraud and a phony and it's only
a matter of time until they find you out.

Homer: (gasps) Who told you?
