Voices in the Void

We had finally arrived; the train ride had been long and arduous. The two children had played up all the way.

It had been a very busy train with many people taking the same journey. Long periods of it had been made without stops.

It was hard work trying to stop little Dan and Hannah from annoying the other train passengers. There were many elderly people travelling and all they wanted to do was to chat with them or pull on their beards or clothing.

Another favourite was to ask where the train was going. We'd kept the destination a secret. But they would find adult after adult and the first question, always the first question "Where are we going?", "How long will it be?" and of course "Are we there yet?"

Asked with such excitement.

There were other children too. They played with whatever they could find as most of them (like our children) hadn't thought to bring any toys. They were often so busy playing that they'd forget the length of the journey and stop asking their questions, if only for an hour or two!

It was only then that we had time ourselves to daydream about where we were actually going.

-------------

We disembarked; and it was as I'd feared.

The first thing that Hannah and Daniel saw as we stumbled to the siding was the German guards throwing the bodies of the dead into a passing container. The infirm adults shot in the neck and then loaded.

One guard pick up sick infants by the ankles and smashed their heads against the carriage before casually dropping them into the receptacle. Well, they were nearly dead anyway I suppose.

However, it was as we marched past a low dark building on the way to our accommodation block that the real horrors really dawned upon me and my family.

It was the voices in the void pleading and begging and amongst all asking "Remember me for I am Jacob".

We couldn't see any of them but we knew they we us.

Were us...were us..... retard.

I'm just saying, why not have two geniuses in the family? Sort of a
spare in case Bart's brain blows up.
