It's 1:00 am and Bayview is just starting to come alive. The suburb rats are begging to return to their fancy dwellings in the hills, and the real night life begins to emerge. And as they emerge, the cops retreat. They know not to mess with the dregs, less they want to go home with a knife in their chest.
I put on my black leather overcoat and wait at the door for Owen. It always takes Owen awhile to get dressed, but when he steps out of his room I can see why. Owen always looks sharp, no matter what the occasion. And, as always, he's wearing shades. Owen is never without his shades. He has dozens of pairs for all occasions, and as I watch him get his keys I realize I have never actually seen his eyes. For the last year or so we've been roommates, and I have never once seen Owen without shades on. I don't bother him about it though; Owen is one cool cat and the shades just compliment his personality.
We roll out, Owen driving his blacked out Skyline. He managed to ship the car from his native Japan, which somehow got "lost" right before customs and was found in our garage. I don't bother asking questions, 'cause it's one helluva conversation piece when we pull up to a convertible filled with nice prospects. Just roll down the driver's window and you're instantly bombarded with the usual "That's SO cool!" and "What IS it?" Once the girls start gawking, Owen uses his silky voice to coax them into joining us for the night. It is almost seems too easy at times.
I never knew what Owen did to earn money for all his nice things. I didn't ask, either, because his large paycheck helped out a lot with rent. Tonight, though, I was curious. It may have been the Red Bull, it may have been the speed, it may have been both, but tonight I just had to know.
"You know Owen," I began, "you have all these nice things, but how do you pay for it?" Owen just looked at me for a second, and then smiled. He pulled into an alley in Bayview's Red Light district and parked the car. He stepped out, and went to talk to a young lady in fishnet stockings. Three more came out; each dressed in a different theme. There was an Asian girl dressed as a geisha, a Hispanic dressed as a nurse, and even a Russian girl dressed as a construction worker. Owen spoke with them for a few moments, and then returned to the car. He looked me over once, then, smiling, tossed several rolls of money into my lap.
I love this town.

"And I'm not missin' a thing, watchin' the full moon crossin' the range,
ridin' the storm out."
