She stood in the rain long after the others had run for their cars.
It was fitting, she thought. Not a cloud in the sky all day, but gather all the leeches and hangers-on in this family together and the good Lord'll have plenty to say about it.
She looked back at the road. There was only one car left besides hers. She knew whose it was. Damn him if he thinks I'll lay with him now. Being wealthy means never having to fuck anybody.
She looked at the headstone. Not like him to be so restrained. She half expected his manservant to pop out and serve hors d'oeuvres.
Loving Husband. Jesus. To whom? Not to me, that's for sure. I don't know what the other wives would say. Probably nothing, even now. Goddamn perpetual trusts. Sonuvabitch wants everybody under his thumb forever.
"Not me, William." Felt good to say it. "William." He hated that name. Everybody just calls me Bill, he'd say, as if he was the most humble man on earth.
William Edward Forsythe was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and loathe to let anyone forget it in spite of the aw shucks routine. He was the opposite of humble. He was malevolent in his egocentricity. He didn't just want to be the center of his own universe; he wanted to be the center of yours, too. Even better if you resisted.
As he lay dying, unable to speak, all the wonders of modern medicine at his beck and call yet unable to prolong his life, she'd leaned down and whispered in his ear. She told him about the policy. He'd never known and wouldn't have allowed it, and she knew he was truly shocked.
It had been hell to keep it paid, let alone a secret from him, but she'd managed. She'd have money. Enough that she didn't need his, with all those strings attached.
His rheumy eyes grew wide and told her he'd never wanted anything in his life as much as he wanted to rise out of that bed and choke the living hell out of her.
It was a look she treasured. She'd remember it the rest of her life.
She didn't need his money. He would not control her from the grave.
She raised her eyes to the heavens, allowing the healing rains to cleanse her, as if they could wash the years away, along with her sins. It was the happiest moment of her life.
She never felt a thing when the bullet passed through her brain; her body was lifeless the moment she hit the ground. That was only thing William would have regretted. He would've liked her to suffer.
As she lay there, her lips moved with the beating rain, as if whispering her confession to the grave.
Her former lover, the "manservant" as she called him, quickly dissembled the rifle and drove away.
He was exceedingly wealthy now. It was the happiest moment of his life.

At first I was like "Ok this is good."
Then I was like "Wait. How is this different from any episode of Days of our Lives?"
Then, I farted and left you a -1.
