My little sister was always a little weird. She used to stand and watch me and the other kids gazing silently at our play. My mom tried to make her into a normal little girl. She bought her baby dolls, fake make up and a dress-up chest, dressed her in the cutest clothes, anything to make her fit in with the other girls. Even though she always had the best toys the other kids still wouldn't play with her. They thought she was weird too.
She collected stuff. Her room was filled with it. Different little jars of sand, rocks, leaves, flowers. Mom got her a flower press and said it was a good, normal hobby. Bethy would spend hours just touching her sea glass or smoothing bird feathers in her fingers. Worn coins, old bottle caps, and half shattered marbles, her room was a little museum dedicated to the backyard and empty lots the rest of us played in while she watched.
On the little white night stand next to her bed is where she kept her favorite things. There was a wrought iron lamp overshadowing everything. It's funny, you never really think of a source of light as overshadowing something but this did. It was a twisted, cold, black metal oddity in a room of pink that Mom only let her have because it came from our grandmother's attic.
She laid her treasures out, spaced around the lamp like flowers at the feet of a god. There was also a little piggy bank. It was the kind that you'd have to shatter to get anything out of. The slot on top was about half an inch wide but still not wide enough to see what was in there. I know she never put money in it because one day I went in her room and shook it. Instead of a metallic tinkling like coins I heard weird hollow taps and soft dull landings. It wasn't very heavy so I couldn't figure out what was in there.
One day Evan Whitting rounded up all the boys around to show us the coolest thing in his dad's shed. Bethy just kind of followed us and stood back. No one paid attention to her, for all we cared she was nothing but another dead object leaning against the wall. It was an old fox trap. It's not very hard to guess what happened next. Evan went to prop open the jaws and when they snapped shut out of his control he lost a part of a finger. We ran screaming to get help, Bethy just watched us go.
I remember later that week I noticed that she hadn't been following us around as much. I went to go ask why she was getting weirder. She was in her room petting something, one of her special things. When I walked in she immediately reached over and plunked the "treasure" into the piggy bank. I asked her what it was and she told me nothing, none of my business. I told her that I was her big brother and everything was my business if I wanted it to be.
She grabbed the piggy bank and held it as close to her as she could. It was pretty easy prying it away from her though. I sat on her just to make she couldn't do anything and then dropped it from over my head onto the wood floor.
Some of the things she'd hid ran to all corners of the room, skittering with clinks and taps. Most things remained in the middle. I poked at the little pile of dusty, cobwebbed items. An owl pellet, bones unidentifiable to me, things like that. There was a dead mouse, mummified and crisp to the touch, its gray hairs wisping away from it's sunken skin and partially bared skeleton.
I got up off her, she just sat there silently crying. I looked a little further, under a couple pieces of rotting fur I found the tip of Evan's finger. It has been bled dry and partially preserved, almost like she knew what she was doing. I left her alone after that. I didn't tell Mom either.
I don't go in there any more. Sometimes I hear skitterings of claws on the floor, or a muffled squeak, but I don't bother Bethy.
