August 3rd, 1999

The hardwood floors creaked beneath Mr. Szetela's frame (Darren if you knew him well enough) as he lumbered out the bedroom door. He approached the bathroom and toilet as he approached his half-century mark - the big five-oh - gingerly and cautious. He'd been having prostate problems off and on for months now, and was almost at the breaking point for a man of his pride and stature to submit to the poking and prodding a physical exam by his doctor.

"Fuckin' quack," Darren murmured to himself as he reminisced on the thought of his last PE - shit - what was that - five years ago?

He held himself with his dominant hand, extending his right hand against the newly painted wall as a brace. The sun shown through the horizontal slits in the blinds illuminating the particles of dust suspended in Brownian motion. As early as it was, an almost mechanical buzzing could be heard from a distance, growing closer, and farther again from the trees. It was the Cicadas, a sign that this late August day was going to be another scorcher. Their Doppleresque humming was a staple of any New England summer morning.

What seemed like an eternity later, Mr. Szetela slowly crept back into the bedroom and eased into his half of the bed. Denise laid sleeping, slowly breathing, hair tucked behind her ear. He diamond earrings glittered in the morning haze of the boudoir - as he recalled their night alone, their first in ages. It had been a married man's dream, a simple dinner alone with his wife and sex afterwards. They hadn't gone anywhere that special, but nice enough that she got dressed up for him, something Denise hasn't had the opportunity to do in quite some time. And it even had a T.V. in the corner to watch the game.

Darren lay briefly on his left side facing her, admiring her strong and feminine features further. Her olive skin contrasted their beige sheets rather vividly, even in the gloom of drawn shades. Behind those eyelids were deep almond eyes - the kind you can get lost in when she asks you where homeroom is on the first day of high school, and never really find your way out. He had proposed to at their senior prom, even though she was with some jerk at the time. She laughed it off, but he eventually won her over when she got over the guy she dated. They had been inseparable ever since.

Her hair was a dark, almost a reddish chestnut, and still smelled vaguely of whatever perfume she wore the night before. As a matter of fact, it was the only thing she was still wearing.

She had been wild last night, a delightful surprise to their normal sex-life. They haven't been really able to let loose with the kids here as they lived on the same floor. Adam, a senior and Brandon a freshman in high school were camping with two of their friends up north for the weekend, and due back early this morning. With the house all to themselves the night previous, that had expressed themselves physically twice - once in the kitchen and again in the traditional bedroom.

Darren sighed in accomplishment of last night's endeavors. Didn't know I still had it, he thought to himself. Their floor was littered with clothes: belts, a sock here or there alongside her unmentionables. He tilted his head back, seeing the handcuffs still on the headboards. Denise was a tiger, he mused.

Impulses were then again sent up Darren's spinal cord from his bladder telling him he indeed, had to go again.

"Fuckin' quack" he murmured again, this time under his breath.

After another struggle in the bathroom, he decided he was indeed up for good on this Sunday morning. The birds were chirping, some feeding out on the backyard feeder already. A quick brush of the teeth and gargle later he was bound downstairs to the kitchen to brew half a pot of coffee, crack open the paper - and read it front to back. It was one of the things he would do on Sunday mornings, and it likely would change any time soon - that is - until he went to that quack of a doctor.

He was rather husky these days; his knees and lower back reminded him as he bent over the front step to gather the paper. The coffee pot gurgled upon completion; the birds continued to chirp outside, the deck thermometer almost topped 80 degrees.

Three scoops of sugar and a dollop of sugar-free Coffee-mate brand creamer mixed with the hot coffee in his mug, the aptly named, "King Of What's Left." He traveled to the living room, turned on the 24-hour news network, and opened his paper to the local section. He was a multi-tasker and had been since college. Couldn't do anything without the T.V. and music on, and relaxing on Sunday mornings was no exception.

He folded the Sunday Republican in one of those patented father moves, the ones that a younger son would stare at in awe at the ease in which his father can fold a rectangular piece of paper the size of his torso into perfect halves with a flick of a wrist.

He reached for the King mug with his left hand and knocked it off the end table near the couch. The carpet instead began to drink up the coffee - it was always thirsty - as Darren Szetela read the left column, reserved specifically for blurs of developing stories with little information available:

Two Young Men Missing After Camping Trip

Williamsburg, MA - It was reported early this
morning of two young men, whose names were not
being released pending notification of their
parents.

Local authorities are telling us that Emergency
and Police personnel were notified shortly after
11:30 yesterday evening of "mysterious noises" at
their campsite, and the two other companions
checking on their tent afterwards.

At this stage in the proceedings, foul play is not
suspected, but is not being ruled out.

It is worth noting however - that this is not the
first set of disappearances around local campgrounds
reported. Approximately thirty years ago, another
man was reported missing and never found.

There has been similar folklore about the campsite
Itself, as generations have reported missing persons
at the site. The Republican, however, could not
obtain such information before printing.

Darren Szetela's arthritic knees agonized as he raced up the stairs to his son's room. His heart rate rose to an uncomfortable level, paper clutched in hand. Downstairs, the coffee began to dry and stain the carpet. He opened the door to Adam and Brandon's room and looked at their beds, both empty. He noticed the window's blinds were left open, and could see a police cruiser pull up to the side of his house.

His heart leapt from its normal position between his lungs deep into his stomach as he raced down the stairs, just in time to hear the knock at the door.

Fuck all that, I wanted to see Italy lose because they robbed us in the second round.

And as if that wasn't the best way to retire ever, anyway.

Too be honest, french-canadian is another breed on it's own.

Because when you have to avoid seals on your way to work, you don't live in France.

Just like I am not British.

I don't think I have the stamina tonight, kid. Maybe another time. Glad you enjoyed. I'm hoping to finish up this series rather quickly so it doesn't bog me down any more than it will... I got this first part in my head on my way home from class today, and there's two more different stories I'm still waiting to produce.

Shit rofl you might not have known. I was forced to leave Uber for personal reasons and decided to just say "Screw it" and come back.

Plus I'm temporarily unemployed... So I have lots of time on my hands. Without regular work day experience it's hard to write those work posts, but I'll do another for you.
