Okay, Uberites, even if you've never sung or played a single quarter note on here yet, this is your chance to shine.

I've decided to attempt to coordinate a joint musical recording project for any and all of you musically inclined that would like to participate.

Here's the way it will work: first, we pick a song to record. General Uber populace - this is where YOU come in. We need ideas! Cast your vote on this post for a good song to be recorded. Complicated is good. Only request here is that suggestions have fairly wide appeal, and no Uber-related material mmmkay? (i.e. no "Shlongy's Rhapsody No. 34 for Tuba in Eb minor, Fornicattio)

Hopefully, at the same time that the song selection is being determined, we will also flush out who will be singing and playing various instruments/parts. A fair self-assessment of skills is key here. That is to say, I know that money's got a much better lead voice than I do, and ETS is a significantly better guitar player, but I handle myself well on bass guitar and backing vocals...you get the idea. Identify your strongest talent...whatever that may be, there is a spot for it!

Once a song is selected, and parts have been completely flushed out, then I'll send out an MP3 of the original with a click track for recording use. This gives all of us a common baseline to record parts with. Each person will record a track of their individual instrument and send that track back to me via e-mail in WAV or MP3 format, or on a CD via snail mail if you can't get it onto a computer. Tracks can be recorded however you like, as long as it's just the single instrument on the track and it's in sync with the click track recording. If you have questions about effective ways to do this, you can e-mail me and I'll throw some ideas your way for your individual situation. ETS is also a good resource for this sort of inquiry, since he's engineered a lot of music and has tremendous experience.

That being said, once all the tracks are finished, either ETS or I (or both of us) will mix and master the tracks, and send it back to the musicians for approval/changes. Once everyone's reasonably happy with the final mixdown, I'll post it on Uber and linkwhore like mad to all participant's posts for +2whoring.

Soooo....as of now, myself, moneyshotforyou, and ETS are in the game. We'd love to see as many people participate as possible. Interested? Leave your response on here. Be sure to include your preferred mode of participation, and any song ideas that you may have.

Non-musicians - cast your song votes! Cutoff for song ideas and votes will be this Friday at 11:59pm CDT. I'll then sort through the list this weekend and the musicians will vote to approve the final selection.

Questions? E-mail me at captainthorns.at.gmail.com.

I am a classically trained kontrabass player with 15 years experience. I attended the local Academy of Performing Arts during high school, and majored in music performance in university. I was considered the best young bass player in the state while I was attending school. I have played in various ensembles and solo shows all over the southwest United States. I also am proficient at the electric bass, which I gig with occasionally. You can see me perform on August 21st, 2006, at the Hawaiian Fine Arts Center in Honolulu at 6:00pm.

but since captain thorns here says he can noodle a bit on the bass guitar, I think I'll go ahead and let him cover that.

I play acoustic guitar in my band but am pretty sweet with the axe too. Also tinkle the ivories if the mood takes me.

I recommend "Jessica" by the Allman Brothers Band for anyone looking for an ensemble piece. Fuck no singing in it.... Well, in that case how about a bit of Pink Floyd or, barring that, you could go with something like Johnny B Goode or..um..something...

Ignore me.

I usually improvise with a lot of blues, so anything involving rock can easily take in a bluesy feel. The two genres mesh very well.

Shit, piss, hell, damn, snot, puke, and fuck!!

I sing the blues and play a passable acoustic rhythm guitar, but my
piece of crap computer wouldn't handle this, nor would my dial-up connection.

Songs:

Stormy Monday Blues- T-Bone Walker

The Sky is Crying- Stevie Ray version

She caught The Katy- Taj Mahal

Money Honey- Elvis

Yer Blues- The Beatles

Hootchie Cootchie Man- Muddy Waters

Crossroads- Robert Johnson or Clapton

Mustang Sally- Wilson Pickett

Jambalaya- Hank Williams

Games People Play- Alan Parsons

Summertime- (from Porgy and Bess) various artists

Blacksnake in My Room- Blind Lemon Jefferson

La Bamba- Richie Valens

Smoke On The Water- Deep Purple

I could go on for hours. That's enough.

There's this girl that's been on my mind
All the time, Sussudio oh oh
Now she don't even know my name
But I think she likes me just the same
Sussudio oh oh

Oh if she called me I'd be there
I'd come running anywhere
She's all I need, all my life
I feel so good if I just say the word
Sussudio, just say the word
Oh Sussudio

Now I know that I'm too young
My love has just begun
Sussudio oh oh
Ooh give me a chance, give me a sign
I'll show her anytime
Sussudio oh oh

Ah, I've just got to have her, have her now
I've got to get closer but I don't know how
She makes me nervous and makes me scared
But I feel so good if I just say the word
Sussudio just say the word
Oh Sussudio, oh

Ah, she's all I need all of my life
I feel so good if I just say the word
Sussudio I just say the word
Oh Sussudio I just say the word
Oh Sussudio I'll say the word

I suggest instead of everyone playing to a clicktrack, that the drums and a click track get sent to the bassist, who sends the bass part to the guitarist who also gets drums etc. building it up.

This will make mastering easier and their will be more of a unified feel.

I can do drums/keys/guit/mastering but I have dial-up...

sending of parts would have to wav eh? if you use mp3's and then mix to final mp3's you lose a fair bit of quality.
========================

Yeah, I'd prefer WAV for quality reasons as you suggested but the only reason I suggested MP3 was for those with slow internet connections and bandwidth limitations.

I like your build-up idea, too. That's how I record my material at home, from rhythm section up. It'll take a while longer to finish the project that way with many hands participating, but as you said, it will optimize the overall feel/sound to do it that way. Any thoughts on this from others?

Cool idea. I will not participate so as not to embarrass everyone.

I play no instruments and singing.... well, I get different opinions depending on:

1 - who's listening
2 - how drunk whoever's listening is
3 - how drunk I am

You can count me in for dancing in a cage next to the band though.

I've actually done some singing in my life and I'm fairly good, though my voice got messed up in some of the higher pitches in the last 2 years or so.

I can do Silverchair-esque vocals.

I can play a shitty acoustic guitar, and can certainly lend a wail or two if needs be.
Worst case I can smack my dick on the microphone and provide a beat.

can't sing for a lick. at least not in every note required i think i get like f and b and that's it.

i can kinda play a digeridoo, even though i can't spell it. i can almost play guitar but not near enough to pleasantly.

I'm a lead guitarist (Don't believe me? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3eLAyCM5Bh ).

I wouldn't mind contributing.

Okay, the only instrument I know how to play is the Skin Harmonica. I can play drums, too.
========================

We can use you on the skin harmonica. Every band needs a groupie.

Been a lead singer in a band on and off for about 15 years. And can play a plethora of stuff... guitar, piano & mandolin being the main ones.
=========================

We could definately pull from the mandolin experience and some female vocals would be cool as shit too.

And just to pacify Davros...yes, I will be recording your contest thingy for "We Didn't Start The Fire" soon. I figure that THIS undertaking will take a while and just wanted to get the ball rolling.
