Jackson Pollock began painting in 1929 in New York as a regionalist painter studying under Thomas Hart Benton. In his early work he was largely influenced by Mexican muralist and surrealist painters but later began to alter his style and began painting strictly in abstract manner. Pollock used to paint with his canvases on the floor because he felt that "On the floor I am more at ease, I feel nearer, more a part of the painting, since this way I can walk around in it, work from the four sides and be literally `in' the painting."
Pollock also used to paint largely without brushes. With his canvas affixed to the floor he would pour paint directly from the can and manipulate it using trowels, sticks or knives, and would often times try to acheive a heavy impasto by adding things like broken glass, sand, or other foreign matter.
Unlike many other artists, the size of Pollocks canvas had no relation to the size of the finished work, and many times he would trim or alter them after the work had finished.
It was methods such as these that secured Pollock as perhaps the most important of the New American Painters, and certainly among the most important Abstract Expressionists of the 40's and 50's, and indeed, of all time.
Many advanced critics of the time lauded his work but it was still a little comprehended style for its time and was met with its share of sarcastic criticism and abuse. In 1956 Time magazine called him "Jack the Dripper."
Pollock died in 1956 in a car accident that ended a rather unhappy personal life as an alcoholic, but still marked only the beginning of the abstract expressionist movement.
Jackson Pollock, 1912 - 1956
the picture below is my favorite Pollock peice. He painted it in 1942. it is 40 x 56 inches and oil on canvas and can be found at the New York Museum of Modern Art.

spot on rob... its good to know there are people who still get it. you dont gotta agree with me... the world was built on opposing ideas, but a little civility goes a long way.
but like you said... every so often its good to just be a dick. though it seems thats the way it goes more often than not...

I'm pickin' up what yer putting down.
People seem to be losing the capacity to actually communicate with each anymore these days. As a society we are over-run with that horrid 'PC' bullshit- so the urge is to forsake some of those gentler, lubricated euphemisms and just come out and say EXACLTY what's on our minds... forgetting that even a thin venir of "polite" can go along way to actually engage someone in a real conversation. (read: tact.)
Of course sometimes it just feels good to be cranky and act like a dick.
Who doesn't these days? I think people like getting wound up almost as much as people dig winding them up.
Especially on this site.
Ultimately the beauty of GOOD art is the fact that it truly is visceral and evokes such intense emotions... but getting into a scrap over it is a bit silly- what with it being so intensely subjective n' all.
Of course you were more offended with >how< Mr. Tooth made his statement rather than >what< he was actually saying.
(Seems to me that is a common problem with most folks these days.)

i understand what youre saying rob but just comming out and saying "POLLOCK WAS A HACK" isnt really an oppinion so much as an uneducated statement.
i mean honestly im not exactly gaga over the guy myself but i think what he did was interesting and i guess thats enough for me. if i didnt like him i would just say "i dont really like this but thats me i guess" and leave it at that unless i could create something better in which case i would be justified in saying "THIS SUCKS BALLS AND I CAN MAKE SOMETHING BETTER MYSELF, HERE IT IS"... ya know?

well everyones entitled to their oppinion but im kinda curious to see your painting which surpasses pollocks art. otherwise, what position would you be in to say anything other than, "i dont really like pollocks art but i appreciate it for what it is."
soooooo, lets see it?

hmmm...
I don't quite understand your logic there PYK... just because you have an opinion on art doesn't mean you can create art. Opinions are like assholes, after all.
I CAN create artwork that would look a lot like Pollock's - anyone outside of being an art major would have little chance telling the difference. The thing is - I just don't rate him that high on the artistic "holy fucking moley" chart... nor do I feel like wasting that much paint on giant fucking canvases.
His body of work is really not all that impressive to me - nor do I think he was all that talented. (At least compared to some of my more favorite artist-types.)
But there in-lies the beauty of art... the fact you DO dig it is the important part.

cause the people who were interested could have read it and said huh, i didnt know that. and everyone else could have scrolled down and looked at the picture and said "AYE DOHNT LYKE THYS SCRIBBLE RRT!!!!!"
though i spose i could have just taken some MSN chat windows and colored them in with microsoft paint... thats much better.
you read it, i didnt make you. if you already knew all that... well, good for you. and if you didnt, maybe you learned something, and if you didnt care to know... well then you read it anyways and youre an impressionable jackass.

Pollock was a hack.
Abstract art is to art what the sound of a jackhammer at 6AM is to music.
--
You are absolutely wrong. I assume this was a deliberately provocative statement.
------------------
Absolutely not. I don't 'hate' his art. I don't 'hate' any art really. Just some I could most certainly do without. His is among that category.
Anyway, arguing about art is ridiculous and pointless. All the "you're wrongs" in the world isn't going to make either of us 'right'. So forget it. Whatever.

Sorry.
Even the most quizzical art has SOME level of depth and continuity. This particular piece has none.
I guess I just don't care for this Pollock character?

I'm convinced that someone could shit on a canvas, smear it around, throw a few things that look like eyes and noses in various places, and end up selling it for a cool 1.68 million.
