People pay endlessly for the sins they commit. The stupid thing about humanity is they dole out their own punishments. Nothing is more creative or more brutal than the human psyche when it comes to its own masochistic sense of equality.

In the beginning nothing was of course what it Is now. The older generations vomit up stories of how things were different, people were more respectful, life was simpler, it was peaceful, worthwhile. Their brains are evening out their lives, smoothing the divets and wrinkles of existence by erasing memories. The ripples and waves in the sand are pushed flat by some golden-robed buddhist monk in his rock garden.

It seems the lesser the transgression the more likely the rememberer holds onto it. They use the binding rope of their sin to hang themselves with or like a flail to rend the metaphorical skin from their souls. The worse the sin, the more likely the sinner was content with or even proud of their actions. Perhaps a fond memory of raping a schoolmate, or a wistful smile passing the lips of a Nazi who danced in the ashes at Dachau. No self-imposed consequences are ever the same.

You'd think a higher power would get his or her divine shit together and right the wrongs done by their creations. Maybe it's the parental desire to let their child grow and learn instead of being coddled and nursed into weakness. Then again, the ones that are protected and held close seem to be the most depraved, searching for ways to feel something, even disgust at themselves. Maybe they just do it for fun, who knows?

There's a traveler that ambles along the side of a dirt road or maybe a busy city sidewalk. He never stops longer than it takes to obliterate the sense of comfort that comes with a mundane existence. Upheaval is the stuff of life, a real chance to survive. This is what he gives.

There's a chance you take when you lock eyes with him. He's changed over the decades, centuries, millenia. Years piled upon years of roaming, looking for the next to open the box. Now he wears a trench coat or jeans, maybe a baseball cap, sneakers or perhaps wingtips. A tie or a t shirt, it changes to fit the need but he always stands out. He's always carrying a box or a bag or a briefcase. Something large and unwieldy for the miles of wear on him.

No matter. If you see a traveler who almost, but not quite, fits the surroundings - stay away. That's your only warning. Listen to yourself and listen to me. When he bumps into you, don't ask him what's in the suitcase. Don't even breathe an "I'm sorry," his way. Everyone gets tempted by curiosity but don't ask why the suitcase is so light, or where he's headed or apologize for yourself. You can never pay what's due for this.

Pandora was innocent. The idea to undo the clasps wasn't hers. All the obscenities in the world poured out not from between her fingers wedged beneath a lid on a box but from a suitcase, seemingly empty, in the hands of a stranger. The pleasures, the passions, the deaths and temptations of the world spill out again and again and again. And hope is getting harder to hold on to.
