Nicole sat on the edge of the bed and played with her lighter. She was idly spinning it in between her fingers and kept dropping it on the sheets. It was a plain old bic lighter, but she had managed to hang onto it for more than a week, which was a miracle by her own standards. (She was convinced they purposely hid or ran away from her.) This particular one was red with stars on it, so nothing special. But it was something to concentrate on at the moment. It was better than staring at Sarah.
Sarah was currently fighting with her computer. She was trying to download some music on it. Download, as in pirate it. Ever since she discovered she could pick up a neighbor's wireless signal, she had been playing on Limewire endlessly. Unfortunately, since it was storming tonight, the signal was really weak.
Sarah was the outspoken of the two roommates. You could tell just by looking at her. Her short brown hair was often chopped at weird angles and styled in that New York hipster look. She didn't wear anything that had a brand name on it, but instead shopped at thrift stores. She said in made her feel "vintage." These were the kinds of things that she said. Nicole often wondered if she really meant them, or was just seeing if her roommie was buying it. Nicole, on the other hand, was as plain as they came. Well, as far as she thought. Long, dirty blonde hair hung straight and she could stand to lose 15 pounds. Not at all the skinny frame that Sarah had. Sarah was almost boyish in her body type. Maybe that's why Nicole kept looking.
She had never considered herself bisexual. She had never really considered herself sexual, for that matter. A few fumbled attempts with her boyfriend from high school barely counted as far as she was concerned. She hadn't really had time to date in college so far. Not that anyone ever took notice of her. Too many girls went to this campus that looked as if they had just walked out of a Ambercrombie catalog. Someone like Nicole wouldn't have to worry about fighting the boys off with a stick, in her opinion. Not Like Sarah.
Her roommate had dated a good bit her freshman year, but that had trickled off the past few semesters. The only guy that Sarah saw frequently was Paul, her lab partner from Chem class last year. (Paul was also spectacularly gay.) They went out drinking at the bars often here in town and as far as Nicole knew, Sarah had never brought anybody home. Nicole had a few months to go before she turned 21, but Sarah promised to show her where all the cool hang outs were. Nicole just wanted the opportunity to spend time with her roommate.
They had met through a mutual friend, Jamie. Jamie had gone to the same high school as Nicole, and when she moved out of the apartment to go live with her boyfriend, she had mention Nicole's name to Sarah. The two girls had hit if off right away, despite what Nicole thought were glaring differences. They had the same tastes in music, the same hatred of sports and the same love of beatnik writers.
It was about two months into their living arrangement that Nicole had a sudden shock. She had come out in the middle of the night to get some juice and take some more decongestant for her cold. She had the pills in hand when she walked into the kitchen and found Sarah standing there in only a pair of light blue cotton panties. The curve of her breasts were illuminated by the refrigerator light and her short brown hair was pushed back in a head band. Nicole stood there for a moment just looking at Sarah. She had never seen anything so beautiful in her life. She also didn't know what to do.
Right then Sarah closed the fridge and looked around at her. Nicole had been horribly embarrassed and started to mumble an apology, but Sarah started asking her about the left over tuna casserole. Her obvious lack of humility shut Nicole up. Nicole muttered something about it going bad, and side stepped her to the fridge to retrieve the apple juice. Sarah had just sworn, grabbed a bag of pretzels, and headed back to her room.
The image of Sarah in the kitchen had stayed with Nicole ever since then. She had tried to play it off as sleepiness, then as a matter of jealousy. In the end she had to accept it was a matter of desire. She wanted to see Sarah like that again. She wanted to touch her. It wasn't as if she wanted to have wild lesbian sex with her roommate, no, it wasn't that really. She just wanted to... something.
So now she sat on the bed, next to her roommate while playing with a lighter, trying to pretend to be interested in Sarah's quest for new music. Inscence burned near by, a lovely musky scent filling the room. Nicole didn't use to care for it, but now it just reminded her of her roommate. That, and it kind of made her sleepy. She lay back on the bed, her lower legs dangling off, and fiddled some more with the lighter. At some point she must have closed her eyes, but she really didn't remember.
But she remembered opening them. Sarah was laying down beside her, staring right at her. Nicole didn't move, she was frozen. The tip of Sarah's nose was only a few inches away from her own. Her roommate's lips were cast in a small smile. Sarah said something, but Nicole didn't hear her, she could only see those lips moving.
And then she was gone, bouncing off the bed and back to her computer table. Nicole released her the breath she realized she had been holding, her heart starting again. Sarah had been so close! Nicole lifted her head to look at the girl at the computer. Could she suspect? What did she even say while she was laying here? Just then, Sarah turned and flashed Nicole a toothy grin. Nicole fell back against the bed and daydreamed about one night by the refrigerator.
