Riff Raff.

I play guitar, I've always played guitar ever since I can remember. I don't think I was ever taught and I don't remember asking for one.

It started many many years ago with a cheap acoustic nylon string affair. Then over the years I slowly upgraded and went through many Fenders and a couple of Corts.

Once I landed a decent job and had some disposable cash I eventually treated myself to a Rodriguez Pro Classic FG-S. It cost me a month's salary but I felt it was worth every penny.

After all I was searching for the perfect riff.

I'd taken myself all over the world looking for inspiration and had listened to music of every conceivable origin. I searched the corners of the planet and the reaches of my soul. I ate, Drank and slept my guitar and the beautiful auditory experiences that I could create.

I often was kept awake at night through fear that I would, in fact, create the perfect riff. I'd leave myself nothing to reach for, what use would be my guitar after that, when the ultimate sound had been found?

Plus, would I create it or merely discover it? Was it there to start with, in existence floating in the ether just waiting for someone to find it, or would it have to be made, created, brought into being by me or one of my many millions of rivals?

I wanted it so badly, yet didn't, at the same time. That is a strange sensation to have.

Who would judge it? How would I know it was the ultimate riff? I may create a masterpiece, something so powerful that it would make people cry to hear it but yet others may find it nauseating. Or would it being the ultimate, be universally accepted and instantly recognised as the best because it was the best.

Perhaps that was the yard stick....everyone would just KNOW it was the one.

What would I do if another was to find it before me? How would I cope? What would I do? I fear that I would have no option but to arrange something quite dramatic to mark the occasion.

It's been thirty four years and to date I have failed. I have played music that it's beautiful and exciting, humble and bordering on brilliance. But I have not found the riff that I want. It's been going on for so long now I refer to the whole situation as the Riff Raff.

Now I dream of a Breedlove 12 string, maybe therein lays the Holy Grail.

Fridays are quiet because the Aussies are gone, and the Limeys are packin' it in early.

I bought a Jackson USA soloist custom from a friend who needed the cash for like $500. I can't imagine falling in love with another axe like that one. It sounds and plays as well as any Les Paul that I've played on (which is not many.) Weighs more, too.

As for that eternal riff: the public decideds that, don't they? Shit singles stand the test of time while "better written" songs remain fan favorites as often as not.

quite. And the chances of there being a 'perfact' riff, like the chances of there being the 'perfect' song are pretty slim I imagine.

because you're a bunch of ladyboys with your fancy guitars, real rock is about using any guitar you have until you get good enough to use any guitar you're given
----------------
And I think you'll find that no one starts with a Strat or Les Paul.... we all start with fifty quid (100 dollar) cheapos and treat ourselves to better guitars as we earnm more money and get better.

I don't see an issue with that.

~~~~~~
Utter bollocks.
Real rock is spending all your hard earned cash on getting the best guitar to get the best sounds you can.
So kid, how many times have YOU played 'real rock' on stage, huh?
And I'm not a 'ladyboy'. I'm a fucking woman.
Worry not. Your awesome guitar riffs will bring peace and happiness to the world, as long as you can pass your History Presentation. George Carlin will be by in a telephone booth momentarily to help you out there.
Jools Holland has a chap play guitar (when he tours) called Flannigan (I think that's how it is spelt). He did and album of bluesy stuff called 'The Chosen Few'. On it he uses a guitar like the one off the front of the Dire Straights Album... what is that fucker? because THAT is a mean looking and sounding guitar.
~~~~

I've had a go on one of those, although not bought one. They're not that nice to play actually, but they do look nice.

When I was buying that electric it was a toss up between the Ibanez or a Les Paul. I played both but fell in love with that low action and extreme light weight. I used to have a graphite neck Alvarez. It was a great guitar but weighed a ton.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yeah no kidding, playing the Les Paul on stage with a strap is enough to nearly kill you with the damned sheer WEIGHT of it.

The Ibanez was so much lighter. It was a real nice red one. The Les Paul is a sunburst.. I also have a blonde Epiphone Joe Pass which sounds beautiful.

Beano you've sucked asscrack up to now. This post almost mimics my own sentiments.

I own a '79 Fender Strat, blonde with mother of pearl inlays. It's a carbon copy of Hendrix'. Perhaps you might like to ALSO know that I am the proud owner of a Guild Dreadnaught 12-string with an onboard EQ and pre-out (NEENER NEENER NEENER)?
