So there I was... reading away and I came across (SURPRISE!) an ETS post.

After reading a silly argument I stumbled across this little gem:

"Up until the 1850s, when the general store started stocking provisions, folks made most of their household supplies themselves, including lye soap. Three ingredients went into the making of lye soap: lard, lye, and lots of hard work.

Lard was rendered and saved for soap-making from the annual hog kill that took place at the time of the first hard frost in autumn. Lye was made from the ashes left over from the wood stoves. (Most people kept a wooden bin with a side spigot just outside the house, into which they'd dump their ashes. When it came time to make lye soap, they poured water through the ashes and siphoned off the liquid lye.) The third ingredient of lye soap had to be supplied by a pair of hard working hands.

Lye is an extremely caustic agent, so the soap makers had to be careful to have just the right concentration. Too much lye would cause the soap to burn the skin, and too little would keep the soap from hardening. An old wives' tale held that lye was at the proper strength when depositing a floating egg into the mixture revealed only its tip.

To make lye soap, lard and lye were mixed together over an open fire, and stirred for hours with a long-handled paddle. It is said that when the paddle stuck straight up, the soap was ready. Lye soap was then poured into a metal pan and allowed to dry and harden; a process that could take from two weeks to one month. After the lye soap hardened, it was cut into smaller bars for everyday use. People used lye soap to clean everything from their faces to their laundry."

... and then I started thinking about stuff and barfed out a little worthless blurb inspired by weed and some residual bile left over from my last little rant... the result is my very first APW:

3 Points:

1. I didn't find this entertaining, hence the -1.

2. Change starts with you. That isn't sarcasm, or an attempt to corner you, that is truth. Most great change has come from a person breaking his/her inertia. It's a personal decision to change a pattern.

3. Inertia is hard to fight. The first step is generally the hardest.

In short, "discussion," while interesting and occasionally enlightening, often ends up becoming either a pointless argument or a circle jerk. Change doesn't really happen just through discussion. Most people are going to be more interested in throwing their two cents in than actually listening to each other. Look at politics, and how slowly things move when a bunch of old farts sit around and talk. Look what Rosa Parks started just by not moving her black ass. She didn't even have to do anything else. So many people were pissed about her arrest that they broke their inertia. Action, man. Action. People need catalysts. The only way to effect change is to be a catalyst, and that is usually not accomplished through words alone.

(Ok, so technically not moving her black ass was actually the opposite of an action, but you get the idea).

PS: Phosphates are bad for the rivers. Be picky about your laundry detergent.

What a boring cunt you are. Most crazy people at least have a baseline entertainment value.

---

Boring?

Really? Me?

Fair enough. I find me quite interesting... but you are certainly welcome to your opinion.

I'm pretty far from crazy... save that I actually felt the urge to reply to such a useless trolling fuck with obviously nothing compelling to contribute beyond the need to illustrate how cool he thinks he is.

OK See? THAT = Entertainment.

This site is organic. I do follow the fundamental guideline of no more than one post a day because I personally appreciate the logic behind everyone getting their fair crack at exposure for whatever they felt compelled enough to barf out that day and I think that NSFW is a good caveat to throw on questionable content. Other than that is pretty much unregulated chaos.

YOU seem to particularly enjoy contributing mindless stupid bullshit. That is your prerogative. If I feel the urge I wander over and read your drivel, and if I find it entertaining I have always rated it accordingly. Mostly, however, its fairly dumb and annoying (much like its author) so I either ignore it or rate it accoridingly. I'm good like that.

I happen to enjoy talking about politics and religion and that usually comes with measured debate and intellectual discussions. You obviously feel the urge to wander over and wipe your ass on everything I post while reading very little of what I write and maintaining a painful level of ignorance about who I am or what I have to say. You have made up your mind about me and have inexplicably continued this petty obsession even though I have repeatedly handed you your ass many times over.

-------------------------------
This isn't mindless stupid bullshit?

Measured debate and intellectual discussion? You +2 anything pro-conspiracy, you add nothing to the conversation except to try and insult people who don't agree.

I have yet to see a post by you that points out a new problem or has somthing interesting other than mindless "fuck society BS".

---

No, its not. The fact I need to point that out to you is painful, yet fairly typical of your particular style of "debate". I +2 conversations I find interesting. A lot of them do tend to be pro-conspiracy, but I have positively rated many things around this filthy little despot and that particular observation is weak.

Yes, I try my hardest to participate in both measured debate and intellectual discussion - that little blurb you so flippantly cut and pasted is a direct response to a troll who has been stalking me since my arrival on this here site. He adds very little to the gene pool, let alone specific conversations he infects with his oozing stupidity.

I happen to think I add lots to any conversation with people who are willing to have it... I bet you would add A LOT if you weren't so intent on being the best asshole you can be on any given day. You are obviously very smart... but you are also negative, presumptive and stubborn. From what I can tell you don't concede points very well... only consistently drive home your tunnel vision point, stalwartly refuse to add much to the conversation beyond a fervent desire to prove your own point.

Here is a little secret: if you find my particular views mindless- don't bother reading what I post.

It's really that simple.

Although, out of curiosity, what about this post do you consider so mindless?

Is it the limited content?

Fine, I readily admit that it was intellectual fluff. I think it's easy to point out how stupid people are, I just happen to be better at it than most - and I enjoy it - even if it is a tad mindless. I just wanted to try a little experiment with pictures. I still maintain that it is well writen and relvant as well as obvious and failry simplistic.

However- it's the comments where I think this post has some serious merit, which I am assuming you didn't bother to read. Just in case you had the urge:

- In its entirety: http://www.ubersite.com/m/92145#2112401

- Selected comment from: http://www.ubersite.com/m/92145#2112596

"Do you not get frustrated with the growing indifference of our society?

Do you not think that humanity is failing on a fairly spectacular level?

What type of visceral stimulation IS needed to get people who are not so aware to engage in the much needed conversation?

I don't think >the< conversation will ever be had on a site like this... but I am learning things daily. New perspectives and wonderful views on life are to be found interspersed amongst the shitting on chests and silly name calling this website thrives on."

- In its entirety: http://www.ubersite.com/m/92145#2112685

Now, you can continue to smear your own particular brand of negativity around this site and show up every now and again and take a giant 3-coil steamer on each and every one of my posts - I honestly don't really care all that much... but I would care a lot more if you felt like contributing a little more proactively. Feel free to answer some of the questions I ask. Maybe start asking me some REAL questions. Maybe YOU can start coming up with some answers... or at the very least bring them to my attention... and we can (>gasp!<) discuss them...

... or you can fuck off. Your call.

Its boring.

I mentioned these two things below in my responses but I can't imagine you actually read them so I will re-submit them for you now:

"I can't force ANYone to click that little "rate this item" hyper link. That is a complete impossibility. My eagerness for compelling conversation is not something I feel needs to be apologized for... just the same as I wouldn't expect Orgasmatron to suddenly feel bad about rhyming. It's my thing. I can be silly and mindless just like the next guy, but I'd rather meaningfully chat with people than invent new and exciting compound words in some childish "look how big my dick is today" contest."

And:

"I am but 1 link in a sea of blue and pink... and I am fairly consistent. I should be easy to avoid."

Please do me a favor and both read and comprehend those statements... and then promptly fuck off.

I can only imagine after 3 years of experiencing wave after wave of the sort of depraved, juvenile, bullshit that flows from this site (read: awesomeness) that one would get a little numb from the exposure.
---------

actually considering we all (mostly) went through highschool i gotta say depraved, juvenile bullshit doesn't necessary numb anything. i'm not numb right now. well except for my foot but that's asleep.

---

Heh... I was damaged years ago. We went through a period where nothing (...and I truly mean... >sigh<... nothing...) was offside. In fact, the more wrong it was - the more deliciously evil it was. I even had an email folder called "wrong" and contained within that digital vault was some of the most vile, repulsive, damaging content that has ever infected this very interweb. I actually made a grown man cry once. Apparently he still has nightmares about that unfortunate event and continues to plot my eventual payback / demise.

I have personally become so desensitized to filth that nothing really bothers me all that much...

Except compound fractures. Yeesh.

They still fucking freak me out.

Besides, I've been on this site for three years. I've grown abjectedly bitter and all around sick of talking to anyone around here. I've been in so many arguments here that I'm just downright exhausted. I've seen so much bullshit here (and been the cause of much of it) that this place really just has one incredibly dark aura about it.

In short, Ubersite has eaten away at my soul.

I hear you... this site is a complete trip. I've only even known about it for a couple of months and I have been absolutely enthralled ever since. (addictively, obsessively...)

I can only imagine after 3 years of experiencing wave after wave of the sort of depraved, juvenile, bullshit that flows from this site (read: awesomeness) that one would get a little numb from the exposure.

To be fair, I completely agree with Filthy Assistant, these last two posts >ARE< just more of the same and quite frankly not moving the overall discussion forward. I am going to work on something that will hopefully be a little more intellectually engaging and not just selfishly entertaining angst. (...although that is always rather enjoyable.)

HOWEVER, this very afternoon I am heading to the Shuswap for a sweet 4 day adventure on this:

http://www.twinanchors.com/vacation/houseboat/cciv-floorplan.php

It's an insane trip jam-packed full of debauchery and good times. My liver is very frightened.

You're 2 parts intelligence, 2 parts self control and 1 part emotion

ETS is 2 parts intelligence and 8 parts emotion.

I suppose what I'm trying to say is that Uber isn't too much of a place for intelligent political debate.

Maybe somewhat, but I think someone likened us to the Canterbury Tales - a bunch of bored people at work telling stories to entertain ourselves. If we're not entertained, we -2 it. High-mindedness and attempts at meaningful (ie devoid of rape) discourse are not entertaining.

An exaggeration of sorts, but generally holds true.

---

True that. But I find it entertaining... that should count for something.

In all fairness I have learned a fair bit from the conversations I have had on this here site - plus talking about things of substance is exciting. And who says anything about it having to be political... take this post - toxic waste dumping. Happens every single day. It's not a political issue - its a stupidity issue. A laziness issue. Don't you find it pathetic that we have allowed ourselves to become so putridly apathetic?

Meh. I just don't understand why there is such a great resistance to chatting... I mean yer youthy, and a fucking genius type, people like you are the kind of folks wanna be chatting with about these important issues. I have my circle of friends that are entertaining and great to get all pissed up and have fun... I look to the internet to get my intellectual groove on.

Besides, I am but 1 link in a sea of blue and pink... and I am fairly consistent. I should be easy to avoid - yet people keep wandering in and seem really offended. I find it quite interesting to be honest with you.

Rob, you go to great lengths to force others into a conversation with you,
and that is rude. Ubersite is nothing more nor nothing less than a venue

Conversation is always a give and take type of thing, and if you can give, we
should be able to take. Demanding that others respond to you will never work.

See my point?

---

Not entirely, although I certainly appreciate your candor.

I can't force ANYone to click that little "rate this item" hyper link. That is a complete impossibility. NOW... that isn't to say I don't appreciate that kind of thing. Christ - "Beefmitten" is one of my favorite expressions of all time and I read it here on this very site... I just don't feel the need to do it.

Oh sure I can have fun - like we did over on Shlongy's post the other day... that was pure random goodness.

I just encourage people to actually talk... much like you just did here. Civil, intelligent conversation.

And thank you for that!

Uber is a place we come to revel in our collective boredom, and to indulge the coarse and, let's face it, offensively juvenile sense of humor that most of us seem to have in common.

You're really just fucking it up for the rest of us with your attempts at high minded discourse and self-examination.

In short: STFU n00b

---

Really?

You make it sound like I don't appreciate the humor... I fucking dig most of the shit that goes on around these parts.

I'm fucking it up? HAHA... that's rich.

Look, if you don't want to participate... don't. I certainly won't STFU any sooner than you will magically become any more interesting or likable. I like my high minded discourse, if you don't feel like you can keep up, there are other places for you spend your time.

The +2 is for no reason I can fathom.

Rob, you go to great lengths to force others into a conversation with you,
and that is rude. Ubersite is nothing more nor nothing less than a venue
for "Blow me, fucktard."

Conversation is always a give and take type of thing, and if you can give, we
should be able to take. Demanding that others respond to you will never work.

See my point?

Suffice it to say that I do not consider Ubersite a proper venue for my "intellect", such as it may be. I prefer to use the tools that are at my disposal in real life, where it actually counts.

I only use my powers for evil here. Keep trying to make a difference on Ubersite. You'll get far.

No, really, you will.

---

Why not? Are you just Lazy? Intimidated?

Personally I like to take my brain for a walk... and waxing philosophical with other smart people fills me with glee.

What makes you think trying to make a difference on Ubersite is such an untenable cause? Seems to me this place is jammed packed full of big brained, enlightened nerds with a wealth of knowledge that spans many categories. Why can't conversation co-exist with raping babies for sport?

Look, we NEED to do something about this fucking world. I know it. You know it. Where you choose to put your energy is completely up to you... but I just bet you know A LOT about the internet, and I just happen to think that will ultimately be our salvation. Seems to me I am hammering away on this keyboard "in real life". What I talk about is generally happening "in real life"... perhaps you would care to enlighten me as to where this "real life" ends and this magical land of HTML begins for you?

I guess I don't understand how a high-level brainstorming on various ways we can somehow try and fix this debacle of a society is something that doesn't count in the real world.

I will only get as far as I am able. Some days it is harder than others.

---

Oh look! Yet another example of how completely fucking clueless you are.

IF you had bothered to read this post, which I know you didn't, you would know the gist of what I am saying is that this world suffers from excess stupidity. YOUR kind of stupid.

I mean, let's just look at this meager intellectual drivel you managed to squeeze out... "Don't hold your breath, this pussy is all talk and no action... It's always the fault of someone else."

Well no fucking shit Sherlock. Of course I am all talk and no action, if you even bothered to READ anything that I write you would know that. But you don't. You are content in being an oblivious idiot who follows me around and thinks he has some clue as to who I am and what I am all about. I like talking... I'm a lazy fucker. I don't do much. NO ONE DOES.

It's OUR fault.

That is the point. Which you always seem to miss you malignantly stupid fuck.

I >want< to do things, but I lack the drive. See, that is why I try to start conversation with people to try and find out what might be done to get apathetic lazy assholes motivated to change this fucked up world we live in. You consistently show up and piss all over those conversations. I try to foster them, you try to destroy them.

Is there some reason you feel compelled to do so?

Hmm tough guy? Mr. "I'm so smart, I will chase you away.". WHY do you feel the need to be a destructive asshole? Is it because I'm much smarter than you? Do you somehow feel threatened? Need a hug? Reach around?

Bah, fuck it, you are an annoying fucking troll who gets his limited kicks out of being useless. That is your shtick. I get it. I think its absurd and a giant waste of time, but if that is what makes you happy then fucking go for it....just do it elsewhere. I am sure there are dozens, if not hundreds of people who hate you... why don't you shower your stupidity on them?

Please? Pretty fucking please?

---

Very well... I take back "offensive" - pardon me. I tend to employ my vocabulary rather liberally and tend to make things far more dramatic than necessary. My rational still stands, however... I've read it over a few times now and still find it rather amusing.

My reviews are typically more worthwhile than my posts... I tend to shine when engaged in conversation - when posting I have had a tendency to blather on incessantly so I have tried to make them shorter... but then they lack substance. It's fairly catch 22ish.

Please allow me to rephrase, the semantics seem to be holding you up a little...

You seem to see the same things I see... yet you seem pretty against the potential for change, why is that?

Do you not get frustrated with the growing indifference of our society?

Do you not think that humanity is failing on a fairly spectacular level?
-------

i don't think humanity has changed all that much since it's evolution into homo sapien. there have always been, and i'm sure always will be, large groups of people that don't give a flying fuck about anything around them if it's not entertaining. historically, there has always been a large negative impact on the world around us as societies expand and collapse. maybe we could prevent it, but the chance that we will is pretty slim.

the native americans, which everyone seems to credit with being nature loving survivalists, wiped out species in whatever area they moved into. the ones in my area burned out the forests long before the white people got here because clearing out all the undergrowth and dense brush made it easier to hunt. aboriginal people that migrate still follow water supplies and hunting. in climates that have at least a true summer and true winter this makes sense because nature will rotate where food is found. but in places like the middle east with a bedouin culture that's thousands of years old, it's still based on who uses up the resources first because that climate is pretty stable throughout the year.

people are shit. it frustrates me, but there's little i can do to change it other than what i already do on my own. which isn't much anyway. i shoot for the basics, don't kill people, beat children, steal, kick puppies that sort of thing. we've always been indifferent as a species. i don't think it's really all that changed from thousands of years ago. i see it less as a slow decline and more of a steady level of failure that we just upkeep wonderfully.

genetics has to do with our attraction to pretty things though. so blame god for that one.

i still just didn't like this at all but because i'm now just replying i'll shoot a zero out of laziness.

---

I completely agree... we have been selfish, hubristic, destructive, ungrateful, greedy assholes right from the very start.

That is the nature of humanity... but with all the shit comes a conscience, rationality, morality, and knowledge, and wisdom... we just typically choose to be lazy. I sure do.

Not "maybe we can prevent it"... we CAN fucking prevent it. Period. We just don't want to, harkens back to the kind of laziness that you and I possess, or apathy as it is more euphemistically coined these days.

What I am trying to examine is WHY we all feel the chances are pretty slim. After all, that is a prevailing thought, and it seems to pass as something approaching a real answer. Our penchant for laziness allows us to ignore all kinds problems and more recently we have become increasingly despondent and defeatist.

"What can I do?"

It's a bullshit question. There are LOTS of things that individuals can do - they choose not to. I understand the full spectrum of reasons why people don't : distraction, unwillingness, willful ignorance, spite, boredom, laziness... the list goes on... but they are all pathetic excuses. The same basic truth that if we >really< wanted to change the world, we could.

People do it every single day... individually. But there are far too many opportunities to get lost in the chaos that is society. Bills to pay, mouths to feed, entertainment to enjoy. I get ALL that... but that doesn't change the fact that we NEED to change things. Soon.

Acknowledging the many failures of humanity to this point is certainly valid... but it doesn't do much to solve the problem does it?

In all things physical we are God... the blame rests with us. We are genetically predisposed to all sorts of things, that is why we need society. I don't believe in anarchy, nor do I believe in Utopia.

We need a structured, moral, accountable and transparent society... with laws and justice for all. (Cue Metallica song.) It will take work and it will take planning... but we have the manpower and we have the ability to come up with a fucking kick ass plan.

You see the same thing I see... yet you rail against the potential for change... why is that?

One more thing: society has never before had the internet. We have never enjoyed the capacity for communication that we now have available to us. I happen to think a well oiled plan, some serious buy in, a kick ass viral campaign and a shit load of cash and VOILA! a revolution will be born.

Its going to happen... it has to. The other option is to continue to allow society's failure until we eventually destroy ourselves and crush our souls.

Again, the rating is immaterial, the conversation is what I enjoy... but my rant IS well written and the pictures are amusing to me, so I still don't understand why you find it so offensive. To each their own, I suppose.

i personally consider an art post something that contains art and maybe something about the piece and/or artists. there's nothing crediting these photos to anything. it's basically a cut and paste arrangement made with no credit given and they're obviously not your own. i don't think it was stuck together with any real reasoning even when read alongside the comments.

i think it lacked real effort and deserves a warning about the lack of content (spt). i'm sorry, i just don't think it was art. and i don't think it was worth reading. maybe it if was better organized i'd give it a higher rating. or maybe i "just don't get it." either way, i'm still sticking with my don't bother evaluation.

---

Well, that is certainly fair enough as far as the rating is concerned.

I mean these ratings are trivial and immaterial... so I am not lobbying you to change it.

I have to disagree with your definition of art, but that is also immaterial.

The cut and pasting did not come without serious editing... and if you felt compelled enough to actually read what my comments actually said there is a tremendous amount of relevance to each and every photo. I don't know if you did... my guess is you lost interest and glossed over. I could be quite wrong on that as it is pure conjecture on my part.

I cut and pasted bits of my rant into google images... and those are the ones that came up... not necessarily on the front page, mind you, I had to search, (but I capped it at 10 pages). I didn't think the photos required credit... perhaps that is my bad.

That you think it lacked effort is a rather interesting assessment. It took a fair bit of effort and it is highly organized.

Again, I am not trying to change your mind on your rating, merely wondering what it is about my post you disliked so much and you answered that... I thank you.

I still notice an unwillingness to address the question I asked, however. You are certainly under no obligation to answer it, but you absolutely strike me as someone who is aware so I will try it sans pictures, the bile wiped off, and I will try to be more specific:

Do you not get frustrated with the growing indifference of our society?

Do you not think that humanity is failing on a fairly spectacular level?

What type of visceral stimulation IS needed to get people who are not so aware to engage in the much needed conversation?

I don't think >the< conversation will ever be had on a site like this... but I am learning things daily. New perspectives and wonderful views on life are to be found interspersed amongst the shitting on chests and silly name calling this website thrives on.

This entire post is art... to me, after all art is entirely subjective.

I'm curious, though, oh maker of soap... why slap a -2 on this?

Lack of what you would define art? Lack of enjoyment of my overall presentation?

Lack of desire to talk about this kind of thing? My obvious lack of tact?

Perhaps it was my dismissive, arrogant tone?

I know I have a point... it's been sounding off in my head for years. I casually observe all the stupidity going on in the world and I make my petty, caustic observations and typically people nod their silly little heads and then promptly go back to doing whatever it was they were doing.

We are collectively fucking retarded.

I am genuinely curious: are you suggesting that the entire effort is invalid? Or perhaps just boring? I did take a considerable amount of time to craft this little work of art... and you are a tremendously intelligent individual who is prone to talking about all sorts of things as far a I can gather... what about this particular conversation is so unappealing to you?

Why DO we tolerate this shit? That is a valid question. I see none of you people feel like answering.

As a child I used to run around half naked all day - nary a burn. I walk home from work and I'm fucking burnt. 30 SPF? It's Bullshit... yet FUCK it huh? That is just 'the way it is' and we need to deal with it, right?

Well I say FUCK THAT.

Shocking how few of you people are outraged enough to do anything about this shit, you just slather on more sunscreen, boil your water, avoid swimming in certain lakes, and just roll over and adapt because there is nothing YOU can do about it right?

Fuck you.

Most of you snuff out any attempts to even TALK about some of the stupid bullshit going on in the world today. Those of you who "get it" are too busy wallowing in your own smug awareness to talk about much beyond peeners and how fucking gay "that" person is.

So what the fuck are we supposed to do about this decay? And by "we" I'm talking about the majority of average, middle class, 9-5, consumer driven, poorly educated, unmotivated, easily distracted fuckers who are in the MAJORITY. I mean this stupidity transcends race and political affiliation, this hubris transcends religion. Our fucking uselessness is epidemic. We are a cancer to this planet... which is to say humanity is a cancer. Conveniently we have ignorantly absolved ourselves of any real responsibility on an individual level. Oh we still contribute to the giant shit-pile in our own special way - but the worst thing we do is enable this cycle to continue.

So again, I ask - what do 'we' do about this?

Hmmm? Nothing? Continue to ignore it?

OF COURSE! Some interesting distraction will grab you. Some shiny bauble of pop culture goodness will keep your attention long enough for the slow steady destruction of humanity.

We are all lazy fuckers.

But there IS something we can do.

Isn't there?

I mean that is what people seem to think... some of us do. I think we can do something. In fact I am convinced of it... I've even accepted compelling challenge to come up with something worthwhile but sadly I ain't got nuttin'yet.
