By the way, RyuFu, in case you were actually interested:
I have no definitive answer for the question about eating the Blue Ringed Octopus, but it sounds like you could eat it. Although from what I've read, octopus is not a highly sought after menu item.
==================================
I had octopus for dinner one evening when I was down in Ixtapa, Mexico. It wasn't all that great...similar to calamari (squid), only chewier and blander, and with more suction cups on the tenticles.
And no it wasn't blue-ringed octopus I ate...I have no idea what kind it was, though I'm certain it wasn't THAT specific species.

Have you read 'State of Fear' by Michael Crichton? This little baby is used as a weapon.
How awesome is that?

No, I haven't. That's so cool!!

you should do one of these on fugu, the pufferfish that contains a potentially deadly poison called tetrodotoxin. the guanidinium group is attracted to the inside of human sodium ion channels and the imidazole ring gets lodged, cutting off the flow of ions through the channels. this affects impulse transmission and therefore muscle function. in fact, in some countries in the bahamas a shaman would give a person the poison, wait until after the funeral, and dig up the body and use his 'shaman powers' to revive the person and convince him that he had brought him back from the dead and that he was forever a slave. however the real explanation is that because the toxin disables muscle function, the person wasn't really dead, he was just paralyzed. the toxin is lethal only 60% of the time.
I don't have a clue why I wrote that, I guess I'm just epicly bored

"...two excretion glands that, together, are the same size as its brain."

Oddly enough, this applies to me and Shlongy. I have huge balls and I am a flawless multitasker, while Shlongy has a rather tiny brain and often forgets to take his testosterone injections.

But how does it taste?
-----------------------------------------
I will look into this. I hate every sort of seafood out there, so I can't imagine I'd want to try an octopus, let alone an extremely poisonous one (in other words, I'm going to see if it's edible).

I believe you are incorrect regarding the toxicity of the octopus, specifically the statement that it is more toxic than any land animal.
-----------------------------------
"The bite might be painless, but this octopus injects a neuromuscular paralysing venom. The venom contains some maculotoxin, a poison more violent than any found on land animals. The nerve conduction is blocked and neuromuscular paralysis is followed by death. The victim might be saved if artificial respiration starts before marked cyanosis and hypotension develops. The blue-ringed octopus is the size of a golf ball but its poison is powerful enough to kill an adult human in minutes."

-and-
"When the threat is unavoidable, the Blue-ringed octopus ejects a neuromuscular venom that contains maculotoxin and tetrodotoxin which cause paralysis. This poison is fatal and more potent than any poison found in land animals."

but if there's no antidote for its bite what would seeking help do? they just put you on life-support until it wears off or something?
-----------------------------------
There's no known antidote. The only treatment is hours of heart massage and artificial respiration until the poison has worked its way out of your system.
The venom contains tetrodotoxin, which blocks sodium channels and causes motor paralysis and occasionally respiratory failure. Though with fixed dilated pupils, the senses of the patients are often intact. The victims are aware but unable to respond."

I submit to you the Golden Poison Arrow Frog, Phyllobates Terribilis.
"One wild terribilis specimen may contain up to 1900 micrograms of toxins! Myers and Daly, indirectly judged the human lethal dose of this toxin to be in the range of 2-200 micrograms. The poison would be lethal to humans if it entered an open wound."
"... alkaloids prevent sodium channels from closing, thus preventing nerves from electrically transmitting impulses and therefore, muscles remain in an inactive state of contraction. Ultimately, the heart experiences arrhythmias which can lead to fibrillation and heart failure."

I'd club a baby seal
But you know I won't ingest it
I'd tell my vegan girlfriend
You know I wouldn't suggest it
All my shoes are leather
And I don't care whether or not
All the cute little animals
were to be SHOT.

Maybe if it got rid of the poison and used that space for more brain it wouldn't be an octopus. Think about it.
