Well I thought to myself today that I needed some thoughts from complete strangers on the internet and knowing how brutally honest you all can be, I say everyone here is perfect for the job. So, here's a short piece I did. Just a quick warning it's only about 4 minutes long, no lyrics, and only a guitar was used. Have fun

thanks ilikesteak, just a couple quick quick question though. Dunno if you play rock or anything like that, but how well does the SG get a heavy sound going? Also, how much did you pay for it? I know most Gibsons can be pretty expensive

I tend to play rock, but I vary a lot in the styles. It gets a heavy sound going, enough for death metal, but it can also be relaxed enough to play the grateful dead, and some get a decent twang sound to them. It depends what kind you get. The actual 57'SG is between $1000 and $5000, and the reissue is between $1500 and $3000.

Definatly looking into new everything. Using a yamaha pacifica and roland cube 15, and a shitty headset and tape recorder to get this stuff on my computer. If any of you can recommend anyhting I'd appreciate it.

I'd be glad to help.
57' SG - Guitar.
Mesa Boogie - Amp. I'd suggest the Mark II-C model.
Fostex X-12 4-track Cassette Recorder. KORG D3200 Digital Recorder. - Recording equipment. I say go with the 4 track, you can't go wrong with analog.
Line 6 TonePort UX1 USB Audio Interface. - Straight to computer recording.

It sounds very much like Tool, but if you're going to play solo, do it so that we don't have to imagine something else over what you're playing. Out of principle, and because I'm a drummer, I never -2 music posts, however, be warned, you may be the first if you post 4 minutes of the same couple of chords again.
Otherwise, it does sound like you can play solidly. Next time try to do something that would sound more like lead, solo, guitar, rather than James Iha guitar.
=================
Sounds like Tool?
If you mean by it is played on a guitar then i suppose so...

Here's a neat trick: split the signal fom your guitar in twain. Take one signal to one channel on the board (or left input of your audio card if you're using software mixing) while the other goes through all the effects and then into another channel on the board (or right input on the audio card). Record the signals on separate tracks as you play. This way you can hear the unmodified signal to check for mistakes and the modified signal to make sure you have it properly tweaked.
The clean signal will also let you know what your audience will be hearing - we don't know what you're thinking when you wrote that stuff, if you need us to be too stoned to move in order to fully appreciate the dronestortion, whatever. If the clean signal doesn't hold your interest then what you want us to hear isn't likely to grab us, either.

There are a few things you need to make this decent.
A good bass player. This needs a bassline.
Vocals that don't suck. I don't mean it has to have words to be vocals, but they can't hurt this.
A lead guitarist. You sound like a rhythm player who's trying to add some variation to the few chords that make up the rhythm section.
Better audio quality. It sounded like shit. If you used the poor audio quality to cover up mistakes, then you need a few more years. If the audio quality fucked with what it sounds like in person, then it's time for an upgrade in recording epuipment.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Its not the recording equipment or the audio quality, a simple $100 mixer and $100 microphone would produce better results in that area. Need a new rig. Preferrably one that doesn't sound like a wasp nest you just pissed on.
Other than that...
A metronome and a good bassist. Some people can't really appriciate slow, droning music. Death/Doom, Doom Metal and some Dark Rock bands write great simple songs on guitar.

Well,
That was a bit painfull. It was like listening to someone who has learned two chords and from that point on swore to whatever they believe in that they will only EVER play those two chords and do it for as long as they can.
Over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.
Please. It started and then went nowhere. You said that it was only four minutes. I didn't think it would be four minutes of the same fucking thing over and over.
I don't know. I never -2 music so you are lucky but fuck. If this was words it would look like the above paragraph and be -2ed to hell and back.
Fuck you for forcing me to hold to my morals you two fingered guitar playing asshole.

Lacking a certain level of musical sophistication, would be my initial response. Sounds like it needs some good emo lyrics being screamed over it and a solid drummer.
