Science Fiction. More commonly called "Sci-Fi," it has been a popular genre of books, movies and television for almost a century now. Some of the most prolific writers in American literature were writers of Sci-Fi, such as Isaac Asimov, Robert A. Heinlein and *cough* L. Ron Hubbard. The visual creations of Gene Roddenberry and George Lucas have transcended the fan base and become part of everyday pop culture. Even today, Sci-Fi is a money making, successful route for creative teams.

Well, kinda...

For as many outlets that find fame and success, there are just as many that fail miserably. Take the last two television seasons, for instance. There has been almost a dozen Sci-Fi shows on the air. Some have done quite well, some tanked after just a few episodes. One thing that I've noticed that ties them all together, however, is the more dominant role woman play in these new programs. Gone is the plucky heroine from Buck Rogers's day who needed saving every episode. No, these chicks are the team leaders, the doctors, the ones carrying the big guns.

And in almost every instance, they are very, very hot.

Take one of the most blatant cases - Joelene Blalock's character of T'pol from the most recent Star Trek spinoff "Enterprise." If you thought the creator's jumped the shark with Jerri Ryan's curvy Borg character 7 of 9, then you never watched this series. Actually, I never bothered with either, but I do enjoy looking at the Maxim shot of Ms. Blalock. She's a pretty far cry from Leonard Nimoy.

"Star Gate" was a pretty cool movie. I gotta say, I hate the series. Maybe it's because my little brother is obsessed with it. Anyhow, they've had Amanda Tapping playing the character of Dr. Sam Carter for ten years now. She's cute, I suppose, but the writers decided to add another female to the cast, (I suspect to dress her up in ridiculous outfits, as seems to be the situation every time I'm forced to watch the show.) At least Vala, played by Claudia Black, is attractive.

I vaguely remember reruns of the original "Battlestar Galactica" from my early youth. I recall it being very campy and silly, nothing like the new series. Although I haven't ever caught the new stuff, it looks interesting but I'm told it's somewhat hard to follow. I must say, if all these 'Cylons' look like Boomer (played by Grace Park) and Number Six (played by Tricia Helfer) I don't see the trouble following anything at all.

Joss Whedon scored big with both "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" and "Angel." His Sci-Fi endeavor didn't go quite so well. Too bad, because "Firefly/Serenity" was actually good. Good action, enjoyable characters, and often funny, it didn't hurt that there were some really gorgeous women in the cast. Morena Baccarin as Inara, Jewel Staite as Kaylee, Gina Torres as Zoe, and (my personal favorite) Summer Glau as River. What can I say... I have a thing for insane, telepathic ninjas.

"Supernatural" doesn't have any hot chicks on it. And it sucks.

ABC decided in needed to have some aliens, so it came up with "Invasion." What was actually a relatively cool concept got weighed down with an ever increasing sense of soap opera nonsense. The viewer needed a flow chart to understand the family dynamics of the characters. Kari Matchett as Dr. Mariel Underlay and Lisa Sheridan as Larkin Groves played two of the hottest MILFs ever on TV and the daughter, Kira Underlay played by Alexis Dziena was gorgeous, too.

CBS had to have it's own alien show, a concept that was eerily close to the ABC program. However, "Threshold" had a bigger plot with a secret branch of the government out to stop the extraterrestrials. And this show had both Brett Spiner (Star Trek TNG's Data) and a dwarf! However, it only had one female lead, Carla Gugino as Dr. Molly Caffrey.

Not willing to be the only kid not playing, NBC had it's alien show as well. I never bothered to actually watch "Surface" and I have no idea what it was about. I think it had something to do with little sea monsters, but I just picked that up from the commercials that I remember. Laura Daughtery was played by Lake Bell. Oh, and all three major networks canceled their Sci-Fi shows after only a dozen episodes.

But then some shows do very well. Maybe that's because they don't fall directly under the category of Sci-Fi. I mean, does anyone really know what "Lost" is? All I know is that it's freakin' bizarre and if you miss an episode you're fucked. I'll tell you this, though... I could watch Evangeline Lily playing Kate for hours. Hell, Emilie De Ravin as Claire, Michelle Rodriguez as Ana Lucia, Yunjin Kim as Sun, Cynthia Watros as Libby... they all make me happy.

"Smallville" is another good example of a successful genre TV show. Sometimes a bit too preachy or silly, they do occasionally pull out a great episode. This last season they've seem to be trying to make up for the previous abomination. Poor Allison Mack as Chloe Sullivan will always be second to Kristin Kreuk's Lana Lang. And I swear they just keep finding new reason's to put Erica Durance's Lois Lane in a bikini, which is fine with me.

I've wanted to bang Jewel Staite since she was on "Space Cases", Nickelodeon's bizarre sci-fi effort (which only lasted for two seasons or so).

Carla Gugino makes me drool like a goddamn dog.

Allison Mack is arguably the cutest girl on TV right now. She is very pretty, and plays her character just right, as opposed to the usual gum-smacking implanted bimbos struggling though a string of multisyllabic words.

I only watch a few of the shows, but my little brother is obsessed with all things Sci-Fi.

All his crap is usually on while I'm sitting here with headphones plugged into my computer, playing on Uber.

Dear Bloody Christ, do I hate Star Gate...
