I've been running for so long I can hardly remember a time I wasn't. I can't remember the last time I had a moment of peace or the last time I let my guard down for just one second. But it's out there; the Beast. It's always out there, lurking waiting. Waiting for any chance that I might let down my guard. That's why I run, that's why I don't know peace. All because of that God damn Beast.

Of course the whole reason I'm running is because of the last time I was taken by the Beast. While I'm definitely not the only person the Beast has taken I can only talk about my own experiences. That horrible time. When day after day; seemingly into eternity, I felt like I was dying and wanted to die but couldn't, because the Beast wouldn't let me. It kept me alive until I couldn't take anymore. Then when the Beast finally had me so much in pain I couldn't take it anymore I was able to escape. I've been running ever since.

But that seemed like a decade ago; six years to be exact. Six years I've been running, knowing full well what will happen to me if I'm caught again. I know if the Beast ever has me again I'll not survive. That's how I find myself here. Surrounded by a small group of friends. There's safety in numbers they say. God I hope they're right. At the very least I won't have to face the Beast alone.

I've seen what it can do. I've personally seen it destroy three people. I watched what it did to those three people.

The first time I witnessed what the Beast was fully capable of was about nine years ago behind some sleazy watering hole on the outskirts of the city. I watched it tear apart some poor whore. While she might not have been innocent she still didn't deserve what happened to her. I wanted to stop It but couldn't. Instead I watched as It brutalized some poor girl. She couldn't have been more than eighteen; still a kid. I'll never be able to forget the look of disbelief, terror and agony in her eyes as she was killed. I still see those eyes every night.

The second time I saw one of the Beast's victims was about six months later. Some junkie looking for a fix. For the second time I watched as the Beast did it's gruesome pleasure on a man that looked old enough to be my grandfather. Even now I hear his screams.

Still the worst was the last. Two weeks before I managed to escape the Beast found prey again. A teenager this time. Just some young kid walking home late at night. It looked like he was a bit drunk from his stumbling, probably at some party with all his friends smiling and laughing. Well I hope they had fun, and I hope they said their farewells with some warmth and caring to them, because right as I saw him I saw the Beast kill him. I had to watch a young man; someone with his whole life ahead of him, be murdered. This was the straw that broke the camels back as they say. This was my catalyst to escape two weeks later.

Which brings me back to the present. Even though it may be without peace, and without rest it's also without the Beast.

"Hey man you want some of this?"

"Huh? I...uh" I guess I was so wrapped up in my past and my self-pity I didn't even notice my friend talking to me.

"Dude, do you want of hit of this shit? It's strong but fucking kickass. It'll put a smile on your face man. Fuck you're starting to bum me out moping over there."

I haven't felt good in a long, long time. I've been so busy running from the Beast I haven't really felt much of anything except fear. I know I should stay vigilant for the Beast but what can one little hit hurt. Just to take away some of the pain and fear.

So I take the hit offered and feel the fear leaving. I take another hit. By then I realize the mistake I've made. I realize the Beast has me now, but by now I don't care anymore. I take another hit.

The Beast is back.

Saw it coming BUT the tale was told in an engaging fashion and kept me reading.

Not the same context, but it made me think of it just the same:

I got a cold mind
To go trippin' cross that thin line
I'm sick of doing straight time

What kind of drug it is is irrelevant. Though who ever heard of a guy on pot murdering people. It's a commentary on the hold addiction can have on people.

-------

Whiskey -

I smoke pot daily. And, I have certainly WANTED to murder someone while high (the guy who sold me the schwaggy weed, etc).

Acting on it however? Prolly not in the cards.

Then, throw heroin into the question and eliminate the herb. I never even looked at the picture.

Because it wasn't a broad.

Sounds to me like you'd be better off double lining your underoos from hear on out or you might have another beast beating you in the nose.

Constructive criticism is more than welcome.
