I was 28 when it happened. My life was turned upside down and my entire existence was called into question. This was something I never expected. Ever.
Growing up in suburban So Cal was simple. My parents were still married and my neighborhood was quiet and friendly. Off to college I went at 18 years old, and back again to my childhood home while I looked for work. I got an apartment after that but was still only a mile away from my family. The day I was accepted to the doctoral program I was excited and wanted to share the news.
I decided to stop by in the middle of the day during the week. Big mistake. Huge. Astronomical!
We always used the back door to enter the house. Just walk right in, friends and family all knew the drill. Only the postman or a stranger would use the front door. I bounded into the house with excitement looking around for someone to tell. Silence.
I walked to the back near the bedrooms and turned the corner. There in the room of my youth, walls still painted purple with girlie curtains covering the windows, I saw my father. He was naked and there was another person in the room. I took one more step before I realized I shouldn't. The other person was a young man. His dick was in my dads' ass! What the fuck?!
I turned and RAN to the living room. Did I just see what I think I saw? Can't be. Just then a young man still shaken from hurriedly dressing ran past me and out the door. I heard the toilet flush. My dad appeared and said hello. He was sweaty and nervous. A wet sounding fart slipped out of him. Gross!
I was stunned, shocked, horrified. I have no idea what our conversation sounded like but I got out of the house as fast as possible. Once I was safely back at my apartment I began to process what I had just witnessed. Is he gay? Could he have AIDS? Does my mom know? My head was swimming.
I quickly dialed my best friend. We were on the phone for quite a while and he was giving my dad the benefit of the doubt until he stopped suddenly and said, "Wait, did you say he was naked?" I felt like I was going to pass out. "Oh yeah, he's gay," my friend said matter-of-factly.
What do I do? Should I talk to my mom? What about the rest of my family? The next few months sucked big time as I tried my best to sort all of this out.
I spoke with my mother who informed me that she knew my father had unprotected sex with random (very young) men that he picked up around town, but as long as she didn't have to hear about it or see it, she was fine with it. Fine with it?! What the fuck is wrong with you woman? I was pissed. She was endangering herself and being a complete idiot.
She also told me they used to be swingers but when she got tired of it he didn't want to stop. He refused to stop. She hated him for it. This happened when I was just a baby and in the early 70's it was less accepted to be a single parent. So she stayed with him and let him do whatever the fuck he wanted to as long as she never had to think about it. She cried. I didn't.
I had been lied to my entire life by the very people I was supposed to be able to trust. Many other sick details surfaced over the next few weeks and then I had had enough. I stopped all contact with them and they knew why. My perfect little life and everything I believed about the world was violently stripped from me. It took me a few years to really grieve for my loss. I'm lucky though, I am positive this experience is insignificant compared to the things that other people have had to go through.
