Once, I had a teacher that was so kickass that he is the Best Teacher In The Known Universe™.
He taught photography. He had about $7,500 worth of photographic things, including a camera made in the former USSR (I used it, mostly. It was awesome to the max). He had a camera that was nearly a hundred years old, and he had a camera that was barely 100 days old. In short, he kicked ass.
He not only taught photography, but he taught how to take photos that are any good, and not just the products of snap-happyness. He even taught how to do darkroom things. He taught us how to develop film, project it using some sort of light-machine, develop the picture paper, and mix the required chemicals and such. It was a great skill to learn that brought the learning process full circle.
We used ISO 100 Black and White film that he got in big spools of 100, and wound them with a manual little machine into no-name reusable film cartridges. He taught us how to take the pictures themselves. Rule of thirds, borders, suitable subjects, and all that jazz. He taught us how to develop film, process it, and make a print.
His class was also the class where I found my first serious girlfriend (Ah, to be young back then.)
But, he was not just a teacher. He was a storyteller. He had been on every continent on Earth, had several adventures in over 70 countries, and had even taken many local, cultural drugs (Gat, Gumba, Coca, weird things which he tried out over the years of his travels) which he openly discussed with us.
That, and he was a slacker. On boring, rainy-like days in which nobody wanted to do anything, he didn't force anything. He knew that photography can't be forced. So what did we do? Talk about anything and everything. From drugs, to travels, to trips, to airports, to photos, to snacks, and even to laughing at other classes. While other classes were forced to do grueling labourious-like things, we just sat around.
Best. Teacher. Ever.

I read the news today, and there was a lot of depressing stuff about war, intolerance, and media bias. I began to become estranged from myself, reading it- like I wasn't living this life, I wasn't existing in this world. I think the news has begun to focus so much on the depressing and the chaotic that we ignore everything else. We only know about car bombings and suicides and cancer and death tolls because that's all there is to hear.
Anyway, I read the obituaries and your teacher died of AIDS. His body was violated by black people. Twice.

Let me try to understand this. This guy taught photography.
1. He owned many cameras and photography equipment
2. He taught you stuff about photography
3. He talked to you about his recreational drug use.
This does not qualify him for best teacher in the universe.
