Artist Max Ernst was born in Cologne, Germany in 1891. He studied philosophy at the University of Bonn in 1910, and married art historian Luise Straus in 1918. After meeting with Paul Klee in 1919, Ernst began experimenting and created various paintings, block prints and collages. He served with the German army in WWI and then with Jean Arp and Alfred Grunwald started the Dada movement, but left for Paris in 1922.

The 1920's were a pivotal time for Ernst. He created "Frottage," which was a pencil-rubbing technique, and with Jean Miro created "Grottage," which was a technique of trowling pigment from a canvas. His 1926 painting "The Virgin Spanking The Christ Child Before Three Witnesses" drew much controversey and a year later he married Marie-Berthe Aurenche.

Although he had struck a friendship with sculptor Alberto Giacometti, he was forced to flee Germany with Peggy Guggenhiem (who he later married), Marcel Duchamp and Marc Chagall. He lived in New York, helping to form the Abstract Expressionism movement until 1946 when he left for California. There he married Dorthea Tanning and relocated to Arizona. Returning to Europe in 1963, the couple settled in the south of France. In 1976 Max Ernst died in a Paris hospital shortly after the Galeries Nationales du Grand-Palais had produced a complete catalogue of his work.

The detail in a few of these is insane. Very profound stuff here.

I like how the colors on some of his work make it look like it was created with cardboard cutouts a-la Monty Python's Flying Circus.

virgin spanking the christ. hahahahahaha, jesus got smacked.

+2, one of these also reminded me of the movie heavy metal. i like surrealism sometimes so some of these i liked. my mind is too linear for stuff like this but hopefully i'll always appreciate the technique and personal style the artist has.

Somehow this reminds me of the APW you did on Dave McKean... which was really awesome too.
