Egon Schiele was born in Tulln, Austria in 1890. When Schiele was 15 years old, he became the ward of his Uncle after his father died of syphilis. His Uncle recognized the youth's artistic abilities and in 1906 Schiele applied at Kunstgewerbeschule (the School of Arts and Crafts) in Vienna. After a year, he tranfered to the more upscale, although more conservative, Akademie der Bildenden Künste, also in Vienna. It was because of his time here at the Akademie in 1907 that some have speculated that he knew another student who had applied - Adolf Hitler.
Schiele sought out Gustav Klimt in 1908 who introduced him to the Wiener Werkstatte, the arts and crafts workshop connected with the Secession and he had his first exhibition, in Klosterneuburg. In 1909 he left the Akademie and was one of the founders of the Neukunstgruppe (New Art Group) as well as finding a love for exploring not only the human figure, but human sexuality.
This began a period of noteriety for Schiele. He met 17 year old Valerie Nuezil, a former model of Gutav Klimt's, who became his lover and modeled for some of Schiele's greatest paintings. The moved to Krumau, but were driven out by the townspeople who felt they lived a decadent lifestyle. They moved to Neulengbach, but in 1912 he was arrested for seducing an underage girl. Although the charges where eventually dropped, he was fined for allowing "pornographic" material accessible to children.
In 1915, Schiele married Edith Harms against her parents' wishes and he continued his work. His output of material over the next few years would be enormous. He had a show in Paris in 1915, and over the next few years, he would show in Zurich, Prague, Dresden, Budapest, Cologne and Munich. He had 50 pieces of art work accepted into Vienna's Seccession 49th show, and all of them where displayed in the main hall. However, that same year the Spainish Flu ran through Europe claiming millions. Egon Schiele died only three days after his wife Edith in 1918.
