The man was standing at the crowded bar.
He was tall, with age that shone through the lines on his face and the graying egdes of his hair - yet the youth that danced in his eyes was undeniable.
Amidst a swarm of drinking, laughing, talking people, the man stood dressed in his finest. Lost in the crowd of faces, oddly, he looked to be all alone.
His attention was focused elsewhere.
And as he stood holding a cocktail he had long since forgotten was chilling his hand, he stared at the dancing couple and thought;
"I loved her first.
Look at the two of them there. Unknowing. Oblivious. Ignoring those around them, looking for nothing more than what's held in the face of the other. Lost in the moment, lost in the music, lost in the dance. So much in love they're alone in this crowded place.
I remember not long ago - I was enough for her.
She told me so.
I hope he knows, I hope he sees me and can tell - she still means the world to me. That girl holds a special place in my heart. It's been there from the beginning, it's still there, and it will be there forever.
I loved her first.
I know things change.
Life changes.
Love changes.
My being the number one man in her life, that's over. I can accept that and I'm not going to stand in their way. I can see it in their eyes. I can see it in their embrace. I saw it the first time I saw them together. I knew it was only a matter of time.
But I loved her first.
Look at how she's grown - from the girl I knew to the woman she is today. Heaven knows I'd love to hold on, but God knows I've got to let her go. It's what's best.
It's the right thing for both of us.
I just hope she remembers. I hope she looks back and knows the grip she has on me - the place she holds in my heart.
I loved her first.
And I'm thankful. As hard as this is, as hard as it is to give her away, to stand there and watch her go, I prayed for this.
I prayed that she'd find him someday.
But I loved her first."

Heartland. Brand new.
Safe to say I've found the song I'll dance to with my daughter at her wedding, should I ever have a little girl.

Will you still want to play this song when EVERYONE ELSE does it at THEIR daughter's wedding?
Good song though.

True love is not what I was after
For a moment I thought it might have been meant to be
You never was true but you did the one thing you could do
You done me wrong...but at least you done me

All concerned are obvious losers. Drippy, maudlin. For Christ's sake, people, we're at war!

+2 because that song kicks ass.
It's not brand new, though. It's a couple of months old, at least.
