I like it when things like this get dragged back up.
There was a little brown bat clinging to the underside of my office window, and the tragically retarded corporate sluts were hoping someone would knock him down "cause it's so gross!!!"
I protected the little dude as he slept, throwing binder clips and launching staples at anyone who came too close.
The fruit bat just reminded me of that.

ps: the main use for zoos are for conservational and research purposes, putting the animals on display for entertainment is just a way to fund the research since research funding is really competitive in all fields of science nowadays

interestingly enough, or not interestingly depending upon if you care, I spent the last three years researching those repetative and/or self-destructive behaviors, focusing on pacing, that youre talking about in your conclusion, using Canadian lynx and Wolves as my subjects. And actually, the cage size was found to have a statistically negligent effect on the amount of the behavior exhibited by the animals. The most important issue was the amount of enrichment available to the animals.
