Gay rights in Canada have come a long way considering people went to jail for being a
homosexual just over 30 years ago. Now same-sex couples are fighting for the right
to be legally married - and all the benefits and responsibilities that opposite-sex
couples have.
Heres just a brief timeline of what has happened recently:
Michael Stark and Michael Leshner
June 10, 2003
The Ontario Court of Appeal upholds a lower court ruling to legally allow same-sex marriages. "The existing common law definition of marriage violates the couple's equality rights on the basis of sexual orientation under (the charter)," read the decision. The judgment follows the Ontario Divisional Court ruling on July 12, 2002.
Hours after the ruling, Michael Leshner and Michael Stark are married in a ceremony in Toronto. Both men played a key role in the court case.
June 11, 2003
Ontario attorney general Norm Sterling announces that the province will obey the law and register same-sex marriages. Nearly two-dozen homosexual couples applied for marriage licences in Ontario on June 10.
June 17, 2003
Prime Minister Jean Chrétien announces legislation to make same-sex marriages legal, while at the same time permitting churches and other religious groups to "sanctify marriage as they see it." It means Ottawa will not appeal two provincial court rulings allowing same-sex unions. "There is an evolution in society," Chrétien said
With that said Canada joins the ranks of Denmark, The Netherlands.
Being Heterosexual this law does not offend me at all, I think that they deserve equal rights and
should be recognized as a form of marriage which they will be now. In Canada we got our Jerry Falwell wanna bes, getting all pissed off saying that this isnt marriage and should be recognized as a group joining together not calling it marriage because all religions recognize marriage as a man and a woman. Thats the basis of the arguement for these evangelist nuts. I feel this is just like the taboo that different race couples faced back in the 50s 60s and 70s(Ie Black guy with a White girl).
Anyhow what do you Ubers feel about this controversial decision?

"I tend to think that people who get so uptight and righteous about it should take a good, long, hard look in their own closet to see why they are so threatened by it."
So true, Loki.

It's so meaningless for homosexuals to get married. The solution is the French PACS system.

"Adopt kids, embarass them as teenagers for having 2 mommies or daddies. Oh man. That would lead to terrible treatment in school. Better homeschool them."
dude, that's not the way. why would removing yourself from society help spread understanding?
besides, my best friend's dad was gay. none of us thought twice about it, I spent a considerable amount of time over there in high school, and still visit his "other dad" to this day. most other kids either had no clue, or the few that thought it was "sick" or "fucked up" or "wrong" either changed their mind or got their asses beat.

One more thing and then I'll let it go. Is it just me or do "they" use the same arguments to justify discriminating against gays that were once used against black people? (specifically I've heard this in conjunction with the military)

Why does anyone give a rat's ass what consenting adults do in the privacy of their own homes? It's pathetic and I tend to think that people who get so uptight and righteous about it should take a good, long, hard look in their own closet to see why they are so threatened by it.
Don't even get me started about those Christian groups that think they can change people. Oh yea, great idea then they can get married, have kids, find out that they are living a lie and fuck up everyone's lives.
Damn it I did get started about it, maybe too much coffee today.

I am very proud of you Ubers.
Once we can really stop shunning homosexuals for being different, we
will be taking a huge step towards human rights.
I know that every human should have the same rights as any other human
regardless of any difference in any comodity.

Yea, everyone should have the same benifits etc. I know there's gonna be the whole "Bible says no homosexuality under God." stuff, but forget them. Let em get married. Adopt kids, embarass them as teenagers for having 2 mommies or daddies. Oh man. That would lead to terrible treatment in school. Better homeschool them.

Damn straight, sexual preferance will be fazed completely out of society sooner rather then later.

Let 'em. Homosexuals deserve the same rights as heterosexual couples do. Give them the tax benefits, the ability to adopt a child, everything.
