There're alot of covers floating around these days. Some of them are pretty good - others suck donkey dung. Here's my opinion on a few of them.
I love rock n roll - Joan Jett
Covered by: Britney Spears
The Joan Jett version is funky, rebellious and a helluva lot of fun to listen and sing along to. It's like Jack n lime on the rocks.
The Britney Spears version is like fake fruit juice concentrate after it's sell-by date - way too sweet and OFF.
Wicked Game - Chris Isaac
Covered by: H.I.M
Chris Isaac got much recognition for this song, along with his rather unmanly high notes (yes, i'm jealous!). It's kind of wistful, and a little sad. Maybe a little too country, but he is singing about a girl who is stuffing around with his heart so...
The H.I.M version is a glam-rock cover. I get the feeling that the singer is more sorry for himself coz he never gets laid or something. I like the edgy feel, but prefer the original.
Shout - Tears for Fears
Covered by: Disturbed
Both the original and the cover make you want to stamp your feet and wave a picket. But the Disturbed one makes you want to yell and throw rocks. The half-shoute, half-sung lyrics bring across the sentiment of the song more for me. They could've used a little less distortion in their guitars tho. The original will, however, always have a spot in my heart.
Sweet dreams - Eurythmics
Covered by: Marilyn Manson/Pink
I have to say it, the original does it for me. It's got a dry, wry, gin n tonic feel for me, and the voice of Annie Lennox adds a world-weary flavour.
The Marilyn Manson one kind of like the hangover. A little scary, a little sickening, and noisy.
Pink funks it up a little, and sings along with/over Annie, and I get the impression she has at least an idea of what the lyrics mean.
Tainted Love - SoftCell (Originally by Gloria Jones)
Covered by: Marilyn Manson
Don't get me wrong, the original is a great song to dance to, and easy on the ears, but in this case the cover comes up tops. Marilyn Manson manages to convey the hate, anger and resentment expressed in the lyrics with his voice and music. Not one you'd play for the oldies, but it does hammer home what the song really is about.
Land of Confusion - Phil Collins
Covered by: Disturbed
Phil sings this song with a little regret, lamenting the way things are. He makes you feel a little guilty and wistful.
Disturbed, on the other hand, sounds pissed off and are basically calling The Man a bastard. Makes you want to kick down the door of Parliament and give a good solid PK to each PM snoozing in their seats. Solid stuff.
This one's a draw. Like 'em both.
Mad World - Tears for Fears
Covered by: Gary Jules
Love T4F. The original is kind of preppy tho, little bubblegummish. You don't really listen to the words.
Gary Jules turned this into a song to kill yourself to.He stripped it way down, just his voice and a piano. Dark, depressing, you just morph into an emo listening to it.
One - Metallica
Covered by: Korn
Oh man. This one's also a toss-up. 'Tallica's original is spine-chilling and scary as hell. Goose-bumpy. Korn turns the amp up to II and makes it a little more tortured. Love them both..
Wonderwall - Oasis
Covered by: Ryan Adams
The original was played to death on radio when it became popular. Oasis is a little in your face with this song, lacking a little subtlety. Ryan Adams brought it home by making it acoustic; you could almost see the man begging his lover to "be the one that saves me"
Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
Covered by: Scissor Sisters
Its hard to cover a Floyd song and get it right. SS was about 50% of the way there. The original makes me think of my Dad (he's an anaesthetist - he makes you "Comfortably Numb :) )
Feel free to add your own, but these are just the ones I can think of right now. There's probably zillions...

Yep. Bob Dole can't swing a dead cat without hitting someone who has covered someone elses music. Nothing in media is new anymore. Movies are all sequels or remakes. Books are usually rippeed off of someone else's plot. Music is so often recycled it has a PTFE stamp on the bottom of it.

I dont know if this qualifies for a cover or not since none of the actual lyrics are spoken, but one of my favorite songs ever is Apocolyptica's version of Nothing Else Matters (Metallica).
I would never have thought that a guitar solo done by Metallica could be outdone by a violin a few base instruments.
There are other songs that I think Apocolyptica does better than Metallica, but this is the one that stands out the most to me.

Sinead O Conner's version of All Apologies actually isn't bad. Possibly my favourite Nirvana song.
Most covers are wank - and the shitty boy/girl bands covering old classics and making a shit load of money out of them piss me off.
Madonna's American Pie - awful awful - and she should know better. Although being around William Orbit for any period of time means you probably HAVE to start ripping off other people. Spirit's Fresh Garbage was used in that Pink song he produced.
Jay Z's Hard Knock life cover? Man, he should stick to doing 99 Problems. That's a quality tune. Soon to be covered by the Teletubbies I have no doubt.

Paul Weller's cover of Walk on Gilded Splinters. (I prefer Dr John's original - but can see the argument)
Tim Buckley's cover of Dolphins (wonderful cover)
Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
Was Tainted Love originally by Soft Cell? I'm not so sure actually.

... Pearl Jam's cover of Mother Love Bone's "Crown of Thorns"
-----------------------------
The version they did on the DVD (NY 2003 first night) kicks so much ass. You don't realise how spectacular that concert is till you get the bootleg. John Lennon's "Gimme Some Truth" and of course "Crazy Mary" are the most kickass of the other covers from that night too.
Also see:
The Real Thing (Russell Morris) covered by Midnight Oil. What they compromise in the psychedelia they make up for in the drive. The problem is they only do the first "band" half of the song (before all the taped sounds and solos come in on the original). It's a great effort but the original is untouchable.
You Gotta Serve Somebody (Dylan) covered by the Grateful Dead, though he was singing on stage with them at the time. They transform an otherwise mediocre (in my opinion) Dylan song into a classic.
Tribute (Tenacious D) covered by me and the guy across the road.

No way Korn is close to Metalicca. James Hedfeild belts out the lyrics so raw and true to the song that Korn has shit on it.

My personal favorite covers are Soungardens cover of Black Sabbath's "Into the Void", Faith No More's cover of "War Pigs", Pearl Jam's cover of Mother Love Bone's "Crown of Thorns", and Stevie Ray Vaughan's version of "Taxman". There are a ton of other good covers, but none of them are coming to me at this odd hour.
