The broken pen was just barely able to scratch out the line:

"October 21st, 1989"

He wasn't even sure if it was 1989. It felt right. It seemed right. But there was really no way to be sure.

He had found the book three days ago, half burnt, many pages charred, but still usable-and most important of all, readable. It had not been written in, to go by the dates of the entries, for about 5 years-if it was 1989. He had found it crushed into the dirt floor of an alley while taking refuge from a nearby rocket bomb attack.

He knew that taking it into his possession was against the law, and that by admitting this to himself, and yet still taking it, he was comitting thoughtcrime, which he knew also meant he was already dead. It was only a matter of time. A similar state of mind seemed to apply to the former owner of the diary; a kind of desperate act, even though you know it won't make any difference, like shouting out to break the noisiest of silences, when you know nobody will hear you-you just want to know that you can hear yourself.

He had wondered since finding the book about its previous owner, this Smith...wondered where he was now; dead, brainwashed, or perhaps still living somewhere, living in defiance of the Party. Perhaps he was with Goldstein, somewhere safe from the eyes of the Thought Police, secretly plotting the downfall of Big Brother.

But no; no one escapes the Thought Police. Surely he was dead.

"Surely he is dead...as am I," he scratched into the diary below his date.

He closed the diary and hid it away from the eternal glare of the telescreen, to be looked at another day. If there would be another day....now that he was a thought criminal, it was only a question of when.

Erm...Hello???

Someone below mentioned 1984 already yet it still gets positive ratings, so how is this NOT just 1984 plaigarised to the eyeballs?

d_prime, please feel free to eliminate this -2 if you feel it is unjust or I have missed something here.

Sorry Mallet.

Wow. Did you seriously think this was plagiarism? Do you understand what plagiarism is? Do you seriously think I thought that I could get away with explicit references to the Thought Police and Big Brother without getting noticed? The point of the post is using the title as basis for an epilogue of sorts in the form of someone finding Winston's diary 5 years later.

You might find that helpful, genius.

My birth on the above date caused, in the following few weeks, the fall of a similar to evil to that which you are referencing... http://www.ubersite.com/m/93029.

Bart: Wow, Dad, you took a baptismal for me. How do you feel?
