I try not to watch reality TV but I know I am not the only one. I watched the first survivor, because it was different and new. I haven't watched it since, at least until last night.
Having already split up the "tribes" along sex and age they decided to break a big taboo in America and split up the tribes along racial lines. Five whites, five asians, five latinos, and five blacks.
I loved how they started it off by asking the contestants how they felt about it. Answers ranged from an interesting social experiment to a chance to represent ones own race to race doesn't matter. Nobody seemed to bring up that it could be great for ratings, I know it worked for me.
I wonder if they knew when they agreed to the competition that it was going to be racially divided.
I wonder if it was clever editing, clever casting or just bad luck that made the black team fit some pretty bad stereotypes?

I taped it, but I had to watch the first 15 minutes anyways.
I particularly like how given the opportunity, the contestants eagerly vidwhored their own stereotypes about their own ethnicity, especially Cao Boi.
That dude is a trip - a hippie Vietnamese Jew? Where the fuck did that guy come from?
Also, they had TWO, count 'em TWO separate people make 'boat people' jokes - Burnett and his producers must be jizzing with glee. There is no way in hell they could get away with this if it was 'scripted' television.

I watched it, thinking for sure they would edit it to make everything squeakily PC. Found it hilarious that the Generic White Guy stole the chicken, only to see it let free to roam by Alternative Girl. Alternative Girl is now in tough with Jock Boy, Generic White Guy, Noxema Girl and the Is That Kosher Chick.

I watched it, I always watch Survivor even though I hate myself for it. eh whatdoyado
I thought these people all knew how the groups were going to be divided ahead of time because I had heard that CBS actually went out and recruited minorities to be sure they would have enough to have this particular format. So, I was a little surprised that they said that they didn't realize what was going to happen.
(shrug)
That Vietnamese guy is bat shit insane and unless he gets voted out quick, I'm gonna get tired of hearing about his boatpeopleness.
I laughed when that idiot chick let those chickens loose. Come on watching people chase chickens through a jungle is worth the loss of an hour of your life isn't it? I don't get the drama there, it's an island and chickens are not exactly a flight risk so you'd think they could eventually sneak up on them and get them back. Running after a thing is going to make it run, but damn don't she jes have a big ole target on her back.
The black guys made a huge HUGE tactical error when they decided to make all the decisions for the group without talking to the womenz. The WTF of it was that they knew they had lost at the time and hell they might as well have volunteered to leave. I thought it was pretty funny when one of the women said that they were going to prove that black people can too swim.
The latinos didn't get as much air time, but I don't think that buy guy knows as much as he's pretending. So what his parents are from an island, that doesn't mean that he knows anything. Shit my grandparents were farmers who would hang their heads in shame if they saw the tomato jungle in my back yard. Hey, it got hot and I lost interest.
They should do a religion based on next: atheists, Jews, Muslims, Christians. That would be fun.

That's the thing you'll have to consider all year. Is it the show editing things to build drama and play the race card, or is it what you as an individual are bringing to the table as you watch it.

I don't think what I am bringing to the table has much to do with it. I think more is going on with the editing or in the selection of people for the show. I don't pretend I don't have any prejudices but I think being aware of them helps me keep them from relying on them to make judgements.

It did put the black team in a bad light if you watched the whole thing (if it was editing or they just happened to pick idiots, I don't know). The "black people don't like to be told what to do," the scene where a guy who couldn't make a fire said "without me you won't get fire," the black guys making decisions without consulting the women.
Maybe I am reading too much into it, or maybe I am a little suprised. I expected them to bend over backwards to show all groups having similiar conversations and experiances, and that they didn't fit any stereotypes.

Look, I don't normally do this, but I have a barn out back that stays pretty warm during the winter and if it gets extra cold out I'll let you come warm up next to the dryer exhaust or the stove exhaust. You get a pretty good whiff of what I'm cooking from out there too, but I won't have any left overs so don't bother. I might even be able to give you some work cutting the grass ($10.00)--it's a riding mower--, giving the cars a winter buffing and seal coat waxing ($25.00 per car), raking the gravel driveway (15.00), and come spring time, there's always a bunch to do. I'll even give you hot chocolate.

I did. I didn't watch til a few seasons ago when a local girl was on, last season sucked, but I figured I'd check this out.
I got the impression they did NOT know about the split by race, though I can't swear that someone actually came out and said whether or not they knew.
I know it's not PC as far as media standards go, but I think it's an interesting experiment.

The race thing is gimmickry par excellance, as they're all just individuals trying to get a million dollars. No one's seeing skin color - everyone's seeing green. And yet, I'm sure that there were viewers who saw one of the black guys taking a nap and thought "Yep! Lazy African Americans!" or will roll their eyes when one of the Asian tribe eats raw fish.
The old Vietnamese guy is rockin' though.
