I've been in the U.S. for about year now and can, of course, tell you what is popular on the radio today. Growing accustomed to thick bass and repetitive beats did not take that long, but I'm disappointed that rap and hip-hop really does dominate most of the musical culture here. In my area, there are very few good rock stations and to my disappointment, no techno-pop at all. I know I'm exaggerating; there is good music but it'll take effort on my part to find it. In Korea, older native and foreign music is basically viewed as superior to modern recordings, even by a good majority of population (youth). If I walk into any store here in the U.S., I'll hear the latest, mainstream, and in my opinion poor music. In Korea, I can walk into any café, restaurant, or most other locations and many times I can expect to hear something from the 1960s or 1970s. From the earliest I can remember, I've been passively listening to music like King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Tudor Lodge, Yes, and the Beatles, to name a few favorites. I enjoy techno-pop just as much which seems to be scorned and laughed at here.

Actually, I've noticed that metal music is becoming popular again in the American mainstream. I really have nothing positive to say about these bands but then, I have no right to tell their fans that they are listening to a bastardized form of heavy metal. I have decent knowledge of the genre, as my brother lives in Norway, a country with largest cultural export in satanic metal music. Judas Priest and Black Sabbath are the only worthwhile heavy metal bands in my opinion; I found that they're quite popular in small record stores, which I'll be visiting more often.

There's also definitely been a rekindling of interest in progressive rock music. I haven't heard a popular, progressive rock band as nuanced in their compositions and with such scope and vision as the Mars Volta. I think they're doing good things for popular American music and are influencing other bands to step it up.

Jazz is new to me. I've worked my way from the type of jazz that's played on radio to recommendations that my professors gave me, such as Miles Davis. So far, this seems like very quality material and I can't believe this style hasn't reached Korea (or at least is popular there). Recommendations from you all are welcome.

Opinions of classical music in Korea and the U.S. seem to be same. Most people have heard at least one symphony written by one of the well-known composers, and the genre seems to appeal to everyone, though I dislike everything I've heard from the Romantic, Baroque, Classical, and et cetera eras. The lightness and spastic quality of music in those eras don't appeal to me. However, I love the works of György Ligeti, although I have no idea what time period his compositions fall into. Recommendations here would be nice too.

There are all sorts of music I discovered here that I remember now, but this is getting long and tedious. Basically, my opinion is that Korea is stuck in the past with music while America, although in somewhat sad shape now, has several acts that are breathing fresh air into the mainstream.

I got through listening to everything except the jazz. The modern progressive rock you recommended is absolutely phenomenal, really thank you. I've been playing Porcupine Tree the most out of that genre though; I love that spacey sound in Up the Downstair. It seems like all that prog is from the Scandinavian countries. You don't know any from other parts of the world? (not that geography matters). The Linda Perhacs was also fantastic- I see now who she influenced; do you have any idea where I can buy her record? Basically I liked everything you recommended immensely except for Paatos. I downloaded the album "Kallocain" and was disappointed to find its mostly very derivative, simplistic, and honestly boring. I don't hear any prog influence except for maybe the awkwardly constructed, violin-dominated song and the vintage instruments. Egg was also a little bit disappointing, but not in the same way as Paatos. The self-titled record is very inaccessible in my opinion and will probably many listens until I appreciate it. The vocals are also very odd.

----

Porcupine Tree is from England, but yeah the best of the modern progressive movement is from Sweden.
There are some other good bands like Finisterre and Il Castello Di Atlante from Italy, Gargamel from Norway, and not really too many others.
Linda Perhacs' album is available through freakemporium.com
Kallocain is easily Paatos' worst album. If you have it in you to give them another chance get the album Timeloss, which features the guitarist from Landberk, Dungen, and Morte Macabre. It's more progressive, surely, and less samey than Kallocain.
Egg is indeed inaccessible because of their jazz tendencies, but I like them a lot.

On top of all that he suggested (incase he missed it, I didn't see as I skimmed thru) check out Camel, A very good prog band imo.

since I'm the only one here who has heard of Tudor Lodge (and is a fan), I'm the only one you should listen to.

for essential modern prog you should check out Liquid Scarlet, Porcupine Tree, Anekdoten, Landberk, Paatos, Black Bonzo, Dungen, Wobbler, Morte Macabre, and Anglagard.

if you are a fan of Yes and King Crimson you should know about the great second tier vintage prog bands like Harmonium, Novalis, Ragnarok, Fantasy, Renaissance, Egg, Celeste, etc

if you are a Tudor Lodge fan you should know about Trees, Fotheringay, Linda Perhacs, Nick Drake

jazz: Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Herbie Hancock, Charles Mingus, Dave Brubeck, Eric Dolphy, Oliver Nelson

-----------------------

No offense, but you're pretty ignorant to this genre of music. All that you've heard is what you've been fed. Nothing but pop-rap. Pretty much the equivalent to Britney Spears. Most people are followers when it comes to music and settle for what's on top at the moment regardless of the amount of talent or effort that goes into it. You're doing this same thing by basing your judgement on Those artists.

Then again, the artists that dominate the charts don't provide much incentive to search for true music so I don't blame you.

I like Tom Waites, Ween, Weezer, most rock out of the sixties rules (i.e. Jimi Hendrix, Led Zepplin, Janice Joplin, The Doors etc.) Al Green RULES!, The White Stripes, They Might be Giants is good fun music, Phish is good jam band dopin music, Pink Floyd, Lead Belly, I'm from Ky so I gotta say that Lorreta Lynn is fabulous but that the Ky Head Hunters suck, Modest Mouse is fan-fucking-tastic, 1000 Hurts has some decent music that I enjoy, sometimes I like shit like Sigur Ross or Mogwai but only sometimes, my friends band The Apparitions is pretty awesome, Sonic Youth, The Dead Kennedys, The Beta Bands' albulm 3 E.P.s is quite good, some older Pearl Jam, Nine Inch Nails is good, the craziest most rowdy bassist I have ever heard, Les Claypool, is in a band called Primus, the albulm Sailing the Seas of Cheese rules, Cake, Gnarls Barkly has good music, the album Soul Food by Goodie Mob is good rap, anything out of the Dungeon family is good rap along with early stuff from the Wu-Tang Clan, M.C. Chris is fucking fantastic if that's your sort of thing, Tai Mai Shu is funny as hell but you may not like it as he mocks orientals but it's all in good fun, Clutch, Helmet, The Gorillas, Requeim for a Dream soundtrack, Taxi Driver soundtrack, Bruce Springsteen, Kermit the Frog, Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Charlie "Bird" Parker, Ray Charles, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, William Hung...just kidding I hate thst shit, Prince depending on how gay I feel, a little Hank Williams Jr. never hurt anybody that was on a good drunk, Soul Fly has a good album entitled Back to the Primitive, Soul Coughing, Sublime, I like a song that was in a movie called The Lost Boys where Corrie Haim was in a bath tub singing about "Wanna sound like frog", Elvis has some fun songs, there are some good dj's out there like Dj. Shadow that I will listen to, John Coltrane, christmas carols, and as far as composers go I can't really be specific with works and the like I just tune into the local station that plays symphonic music and listen. Bye bye.

I don't know what indie rock is. I was recommended Godspeed Emperor (I think) and they were referred to as post-rock
===
Indie implies "independent", as bands signed to smaller record labels as opposed to major ones. It's used to describe the modern equivalent of "alternative" or college rock, but it's a broad term that is often used to describe "rock you wouldn't hear on the radio".

"Godspeed You! Black Emperor" is post rock, and they're amazing.

I'm listening to music backwardly lately, as in apparition for jazz - which I'd never before had interest in. Charlie Parker was an alto sax player off the scale in jazz and highly recommended.

I'm more into alt/rock, go to house of blues in New Orleans to hear NIN, and spend $ less on cd's than on buying vinyl's lately from everything from zep's Houses of the Holy to Smashing Pumpkins since I got new turntable for such. But jazz, it's like the first time one really "gets" Whitman- hard to put into words.

But Charlie Parker, do give him a listen. Jazz is a new world for me, so I can't speak as one knowledgeable about it, except to say I love Charlie Parker (Miles Davis is another.) I'm a total amateur about this genre, so maybe my picks are even less bias than old timers?

The Mars Volta rocks. Are you interested in indie rock or post rock at all?

Try here for excellent, though admittedly sometimes snobbish, suggestions:

I have problem with writing freely. So far, the entries I posted are made up of sayings, phrases, expressions, words, and et cetera that I've memorized in literature.

A band called Nine Inch Nails mixes techno and heavy rock all together pretty well. I recommend looking them up, but it isn't for listening around your parents.
