The other day I was wrapped in a political discussion with some co-workers. Most of them are Republicans, and if you are not one you know what it is like debating with them. Now, I'm not a Democrat. I don't claim affiliation. I consider myself to be a Realist. I look at they way things are and that's just the way they are.
During the discussion I proclaimed America to not be a Democracy but a Totalitarian government. Most of them had no idea what this meant, so I gave them this definition: "It's a government that makes all of the decisions for you, not because of you. They control the media, political parties, and state ideology. They use mass surveillance on its citizens, control criticisms, and use fear tactics."
They then asked me for specific instances. Well, I think I can do that.
Eminent Domain. If you own land, the government can take it from you for "public construction". They don't even need to give you what the land is worth.
You need to ask the government's permission to build on your own land. Let me say that again. It's your land. Want to build a shed? Ask Big Brother if you're allowed.
The government decided cigarettes were very bad for you. So bad that you need to pay more for them, but they won't get rid of them.
It has been decided what can be said on television. And the radio. Oh, and the newspaper. You didn't vote for this. You were told this is the way it was going to be.
Want to travel to another country? Make sure Uncle Sam says it's okay.
Talked on your phone recently? Yeah, chances are that was recorded.
Have a "middle eastern" sounding last name? Welcome to the no fly list!
If the government wants to pass yet another bill that strips your rights as a citizen away, it just brings up terrorists and 9/11.
Why did we break away from England? Taxes. Yet we are taxed to no end. In some states you can be taxed on thing you already own. Had that car for 15 years? Well, pay us because you have it.
This isn't Democracy. In a democratic nation, you would be allowed to do whatever you want within the limits of the law.
You can't even drink certain beverages until the government has decided you are old enough.
God bless America?

both Plato and Machiavelli detested democracy because of the fact that a tyranny can easily be establisted...the American system is indirect, which has helped its security, but the fact remains that it is possible.
In terms of the actions of the government, some of them I agree with, some don't, but yes, this is not a true republic, a true indirect democracy.

"The baffled Aussie should check out the role of contrails in turning off sunlight. Since the Jet Age took off in the 1960s, normal condensation trails from five million jet flights every year have been found to block 10% of sunlight across Europe and the USA. Over heavily trafficked Atlantic and American air-routes, artificial cloud cover caused by jet engine pollutants has increased 20%. [Chemtrails Confirmed '04]"

He couldn't handle debating me on anything resembling the facts (so few of you can), so he attacks me personally instead, erroneously thinking that simply calling me names still gets mileage around here.
I think you're mistaken, Stabby. Why don't you try addressing what I said once in a while instead of spreading falsities about me?

Republican, Democrat... In America, they're pretty much the same thing. People in the 'States talk about being so left- or right-wing, but their politics are so middle of the road compared to other nations in the world, that those terms become nonsensical. It's the same as saying your left nostril is radically different from your right nostril because it's on the other side of your face. Well, what about your ears? Or your extended arms for that matter? The America Political Spectrum is incredibly limited. It's ridiculous.
As for the better type of government, I think that is easily a benevolent dictatorship (emphasis on "benevolent" please). It's efficient, uncorruptable, by definition benevolent, it's better than a two party system that just decide on whatever will get them the most money. There is no way anyone can argue that BENEVOLENT DICTATORSHIP is not the answer.

As a homeowner, I have to say that I agree with zoning laws. Perhaps there are times when it goes too far, but I'd really rather not have someone buy the house across the street from me and turn it into a factory or worse, trailer park.
--------------------
This is why you buy up 100 acres or so and put your house right in the middle of it. If you don't like what your neighbors do to their land, you can always move. The way I see it, as long as they aren't spewing soot into the air, polluting your groundwater, housing lepers, or being excessively noisy, there shouldn't be much you can say about it.
The way I see it, defining this and that as "blighted" or "unsightly" for the purposes of forcing landowners to bend to the will of others with regard to their own property is a dangerous precedent.
Call me a conservative in that respect, although if you think about it, it strictly should be called 'liberal'.
-------------------------
'The way I see it, defining this and that as "blighted" or "unsightly" for the purposes of forcing landowners to bend to the will of others with regard to their own property is a dangerous precedent.'
Indeed it is... yet in the paragraph ABOVE this one, YOU state that spewing soot, polluting ground water, housing Lepers and being noisy are/will 'blight' your neibourhood.
It's all a matter of oppinion old beam.

By the way...the government taking your land was in there from the beginning. It is important, quite honestly. Or have you never driven on a major highway or flown out of an airport? Much of that land is often taken from private citizens.
Recently they've decided that having a good company that pays more taxes than you do is more important than your property rights.... Guess what side of the political spectrum decided that one? There are good and bad with both parties...mostly bad for both. But Democrats certainly do not respect property rights very much.
-----------------------
Again with the stupid democrat vs. republican BULLSHIT.
You are so fucking blinded by the pageant they want you to see, you're missing the forest for the trees. Playing the 'blame game' plays right into their hands in more ways than you know.
Let me break this down for you...both parties are a sham. They are two sides of the same coin. They are two puppets controlled by the same puppetmaster. They truly are two evils of which one is usually only a slight lesser to the other.
I'm not as interested in the politics of it as I am the overall degradation of our civil liberties. Clinton and Bush have steadily eroded them, just like nearly all their predecessors since the turn of the 20th century.
Bottom line is this: Justice Scalia and 4 others stopped the 2000 election, effectively taking it from the American people, and put George Bush in office. If you honestly look at the evidence, that you cannot deny that. To do so is to live in denial, clinging to your distorted notion of duality in politics, while the real truth is right in front of your face.
Clinton did a lot to erode property rights, gun rights, and promote a globalist movement which compromises US sovereignty in the world. He signed presidential decision directive 25, which allowed US and foreign troops, along with our civilian law enforcement to operate together, in clear violation of about every known premise of national sovereignty and posse comitatus.
The clear erosion of our rights has done nothing but accelerate under Bush, and if you're an objective observer, you'll plainly see that.
For the last goddamned time, this has absolutely nothing to do with left vs. right. I'm so sick of that dumb shit I could fucking puke. You even bringing it up displays a level of ignorance I can't even fathom.
Look, suffice it to say, I agree with you if you say property rights are a good thing to try and maintain. I agree if you say that sometimes property needs to be given up for the greater good and effectively compensated for. I disagree with you if you think it's just the realm of the democrats to steal property rights when clearly the current Republican neo-con movement is so far from actual 'conservatism'.
Look, when you boil things down to their essence, the labels of 'conservative' and 'liberal' have no business even being associated with either of these two major parties, as neither one of them actually practice the sorts of things they traditionally (for the last 60 to 70 years) have stood for. Somewhere in all the misdirected bickering, BOTH parties have taken their fair bite out of the Bill of Rights.
What I don't understand is why you are so damned defensive of Republicans, who are obviously a bunch of fucking crooks and liars, not to mention murderers and treasonous cowards.

To be honest I can't see any good in a two party system at all, I know coalitions are often inefficient but they don't occur very often and 'collapse overnight'? I can't recall any instances of countries collapsing due to coalition govts. It just often leads to not much getting done until the next election. Germany has a coalition govt right now and its undertaking some important financial reforms, though I'm aware that that is an example of a best case scenario.

Well you're entitled to your opinion, but I say look at Great Britain or Australia or Canada and then look at the usa. I think two party politics is very bad for a country. the big business thing is an effect of this, in the usa they donate heavily to the conservatives and the democrats and thats it. In Britain if they donated heavily to the conservatives and Labour and those parties started carrying out their wishes they'd not get another whiff of power for decades. Then Big business donates a load to the Liberaldemocrats and if they dared do what BB wanted they'd be out too, my point is that its impossible for BB to corrupt British politics because there are about 25 parties to choose from, and if they bought al 25 parties then another 25 would be set up. In america you vote for the lesser of two evils and the system means that voting for anyone else is a waste of time.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
probably there is good and bad in both systems. I know that a country can collapse overnight practically because of their frail coalition. There is no one system that obviously is better than all the others, or everyone would have it already. It would seem like a coalition would better represent the people, but I really doubt that as they are all still politicians and give and take amongst themselves for political favors.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'd say the opposite... Coalition governments tend to be much weaker and can fall at the drop of a hat. THAT actually is what doesn't work out so well.
I'd say the big lobbyists (Big oil, Pharm, Insurance, Lawyers, Record/Film Industry, etc.) have too much pull. Whoever has the most money usually wins their court battles. This is the fucked up thing that is weak about the system. The will of the people is trampled on by the big donors. Some 70%+ of Americans would support kicking every last illegal immigrant out of the country... yet not even a finger has been lifted at the federal level other than failed bills that are designed to fail from the start...and take time in hopes people forget (and, sadly, they do.)

To completely trust government officials, who have their own agendas, is an utterly insane idea. When any official party has the ability to investigate its self, you are being completely lied to. To use a line from the horrible movie "V for Vendetta" - Governments should fear their people. People should not fear their government.
I absolutely do not trust the government when it has been run by the same families in the same social circle for 200 years. The elite rule for the elite. The commoner is nothing but a speed bump for them.
Democracy has never worked long for any country, and it is fast failing in this one. I recommend bailing out like rats on a sinking ship.
--------------------
Just because our country's government is being infected from the inside out by rats doesn't mean we can't clean up the infestation. All that is required to disempower those that would poison and hijack our government is for our military personnel to understand the nature of their duty and to uphold the constitution in all they do. If they do not fail in that duty, our democracy will not fail. If they succeed, our democracy cannot fail.
This is why it is far more important for a soldier to understand the basic tenents of our nation's constitution than it is for him to pass through boot camp with flying colors.
Your duty is to your people, boys. Remember that. Read your constitution and understand it. Understand the military code of conduct, and understand that you do not have to follow any order which violates the constitution of these United States.
Does everyone get this? Because it's important. The elite are powerless without the poor. Those with the numbers have the power. They SHOULD fear us, because in the words of Tyler Durden, we cook their meals and watch them while they sleep. The military is on OUR side, not theirs.
The ruling elite are paper tigers.

"When you went into the military, Bob, you took an oath to guard our nation against all enemies foreign AND DOMESTIC, did you not? "
And we also swore to obey the orders of the commander in chief and the officers appointed above us. Somehow ETS thinks fighting domestic enemies and serving the president is conflicting.
---------------
"I,____________, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to the regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God"
No sir, you took an oath that REQUIRES YOU to support and defend the constitution first and foremost. That first requirement is not further qualified; however, your duty to obey the President of the United States IS qualified and conditional because you're only required to do so according to the "Uniform Code of Military Justice", which expressly absolves any soldier of a crime when disobeying an unconstitutional order, PERIOD.
If your officers are asking you to subvert the constitution, you have a DUTY to disobey that order! THAT is your oath, sir.
Some of you need a quick fucking lesson in the meaning and nature of your duty as United States servicemen.
You do NOT have a duty to your president like you have a duty to your constitution and your people. Your duty is to the PEOPLE of your country whose government you serve.
You're goddamned right it is conflicting, because your 'president' - the first in HISTORY to have been appointed by the Supreme Court NOT elected by his people - took the same oath to uphold the constitution of the United States, and yet he is trampling it.
If you don't see that, frankly, you need to get your ass back in school. Or, on second thought, that would probably just make it worse.

And we also swore to obey the orders of the commander in chief and the officers appointed above us. Somehow ETS thinks fighting domestic enemies and serving the president is conflicting.

Hahahhahahahahahhaa, bullshit!!! Step outside your part of the planet. Sure I need to have one but I believe in every society you'll find laws demanding identification. Inside Europe there's free traffic of people and goods. I'm not saying that it's ideal I was just correcting this comment.
On the post itself I can only say that we've all had those moments, long long time ago.

the need for permission to build on your own property is fairly retarded. i can understand they don't want you building certain things and that there are specific rules to building, but the fact that you do need a permit to put up a house on land you bought and were taxed on is pretty stupid. also, if you're going to be living in the house why should it be up to any code as long as it doesn't infringe on other people's property rights? like the septic tank must be so far from your neighbor's well - understandable. having an unsafe front porch - well it should be your right to put yourself at danger when you're allowed to do it other ways.
eminent domain needs more restrictions on what the property can be used for. currently "whatever we damn well please" is not a good reason and that's what it amounts to in some cases.
and i think the legal drinking age should be 18, if you're a legal adult why can't you drink?

Yea fuck the FDA, if companies want to sell spinach tainted with e-coli then they should be able to.
--------------------
Careful who you cheer for. The FDA approves shit that is obviously harmful to us every fucking day. Fish full of mercury. Beef and chicken full of artificial growth hormones. They approve drugs that have side effects that kill people...drugs that have, oftentimes, not been thoroughly tested.
The FDA is the reason you can't buy the same prescription drugs from, say, Canada at half price.
Like I said, do some research on the angelic FDA before you go choosing sides.
If people were more self reliant in the first place, if we lived a lifestyle where we ate what we grew and used more of the herbal remedies that have served men for millenia, we wouldn't fucking need the FDA, but this is only a fringe argument. You want an FDA? Fine. Just make sure they're doing what you expect of them.

Eminent domain can be appealed in court. It is seldom used because it's extremely unpopular and elected officials tend to not like to be unpopular.
When your house catches fire, and the firemen can't get to it because your shed is blocking the way, then complain about Big Brother.
I'm sure that when you get lung cancer, you'll file for disability and/or medicare. Where does that money come from? Keep smoking.
Some of us would rather that our young children aren't watching hardcore porn on tv.
Try crossing ANY national border without a passport.
Your phone conversations are not recorded unless you give reason for them to do so.
No fly list? Perhaps you haven't heard that people with middle eastern sounding names like to hijack planes and slam them into large buildings with thousands of civilians in them?
What bills take your rights away that use 9/11 as justification? What rights are you forfeiting? The right to plot bombings?
Yes, taxes are high, but those that complain the most about them are the ones that are first in the dole line, or the first to complain about how there's a pothole in their street.
If this isn't democracy, then why do we hold no less than two elections a year? It's a representative democracy. You elect those that you feel best represent you.
Upset that you can't drink until you're 21? Ever hear of something called prohibition? I heard that it really sucked. Do you really think that the world would be a better place with a bunch of toilet-hugging drunk 16 year olds on the street?
There's your answers.
--------------------------------
I could tear this to absolute pieces, but I'll go easy.
Some of it I agree with, but some of it is misinformed bullshit. You're buying into the lie.
Wake the fuck up, Bob. The war on terror is a fucking sham. Our rights are being eroded in front of our fucking faces. They have been for decades, and this is just the latest, most serious affront. The sooner you realize that, the better off you'll be.
"What bills take your rights away that use 9/11 as justification? What rights are you forfeiting? The right to plot bombings?"
Haven't you ever heard of the Patriot Act, Bob? How about the Model States Emergency Powers Health Act? How about the Help America Vote Act?
Let me ask you this, Bob, since you seem to be so knowledgeable... How do you know they're not recording your conversations when the fucking Senate of the United States doesn't even know that? Why are you so fucking prepared to trust someone who has been exposed for spying on Americans, has ADMITTED they are spying on Americans, but says they're only going after so and so or such and such?
What is the source of this massive trust you've instilled in these people?
Have you read the FISA law? Do you know what it says about spying on Americans and the legality of it? Because I have.
Do you know what the fourth amendment says about our right to be free from illegal searches and seizures as a fundamental tenent of a free society - a society without the constant threat of tyranny? Our framers were some pretty smart men, Bob. You think they put that there for no reason? No, they didn't, Bob. They put that there because they were students of history, Bob. They put that there because they were students of the human condition and knew the potential for abuse of power.
When you went into the military, Bob, you took an oath to guard our nation against all enemies foreign AND DOMESTIC, did you not?

Eminent Domain. If you own land, the government can take it from you for "public construction". They don't even need to give you what the land is worth. (That is true in nearly every country.)
You need to ask the government's permission to build on your own land. Let me say that again. It's your land. Want to build a shed? Ask Big Brother if you're allowed. (That is for the good of OTHER PEOPLE AROUND YOU. Zoning ordinances are to protect your neighbors.)
The government decided cigarettes were very bad for you. So bad that you need to pay more for them, but they won't get rid of them. (They decided marajuana is bad for you too, and they outlawed it. The government has the right to tax goods to whatever extent when it is voted upon by citizen appointed representatives. Did you vote for your senator?)
It has been decided what can be said on television. And the radio. Oh, and the newspaper. You didn't vote for this. You were told this is the way it was going to be. (Again, elected officials decide this. If you don't want your shit being censored, don't vote for Hillary Clinton. It's that simple.)
Want to travel to another country? Make sure Uncle Sam says it's okay. (That's an idiotic point to make. Every country uses passports. It's to keep records of where people are if they are in danger.)
Talked on your phone recently? Yeah, chances are that was recorded. (I completely agree on this. While it's not as frequent as people think, once is too much.)
Have a "middle eastern" sounding last name? Welcome to the no fly list! (Eh. True and not true. My last name is Bin Laden and I fly in the special section of the plane. Sure it's in the cargo hold, and theirs no pressurized air. Or heating. But I get the whole area to myself. Well me and hundreds of pieces of luggage. But seriously the no fly list isn't as big as everyone thinks.)
If the government wants to pass yet another bill that strips your rights as a citizen away, it just brings up terrorists and 9/11. (Many of these actions aren't being passed as bills, but used under the clause of the President's rights to act during emergency situations.)
Why did we break away from England? Taxes. Yet we are taxed to no end. In some states you can be taxed on thing you already own. Had that car for 15 years? Well, pay us because you have it. (Again idiotic. Every government needs money that they raise by TAXES. We seperated from England because they taxed us without representation within the body that was deciding our taxes. We have representation, through VOTING. Vote for your senator and they voice the opinion of their voters. YOU. The money to pay for the roads comes from somewhere. It comes from your car.)
This isn't Democracy. In a democratic nation, you would be allowed to do whatever you want within the limits of the law. (Wrong again, in a democracy [Which this isn't, it's a Republic] you are allowed to do anything within the limits of the opinion of the majority. Those limits ARE called laws and every Democratic nation has them.)
You can't even drink certain beverages until the government has decided you are old enough. (You would let a 3 year old drink vodka? No of course not. Every nation has drinking laws, some just don't enforce them. Again it is the aforementioned LIMIT OF THE LAW. Are you older than 21? No? Then no drinks for you.)
God bless America? (Come on Foolproof what was this? I expected better from you.)
