Chuck Close is an American artist, who was born in the state of Washington in 1940. He attended both the University Of Washington and Yale before spending time in Europe on a scholarship. When he returned, he became a professor at the University Of Massachusetts.
His work was accepted at New York's MoMa (Museum Of Modern Art) in 1973, and shortly thereafter he had a show at Pittsburg's Carnegie Museum of Art and History. Just as his career and fame were beginning to take off in the mid-1980's, he suffered from a collapsed spinal artery. Although now a quadriplegic, Close refused to abandon his art. He painted with a brush in between his teeth for years until he recovered minimal functions in his arms. Now strapping a brush to his hand, he proceeded into a new chapter of his work.
Still creating large portraits, he switched up from his photorealism and began working in a grid-designed manner. These enormous pictures, while appearing as squared squiggles of paint up close, merge into a single, solidified image of a person from a distance. Now living in New York, he continues to paint this way, every year gaining more returned use of his limbs.
All paintings below were created after Chuck Close became a quadriplegic...

Susie_Derkins - Very very cool. Kaos, who is Sepsis and where was he badmouthing APW?? - I've seen him pop up on a number of APW posts, always saying that either, a) they're worthless posts, or b) that they are "plagerized." The poor lil' fellow doesn't seem to quite grasp the concept of fact gathering for an educational piece. He's hit my last four, always way late to avoid confrontation. Granted, Shlongy hates APW, but he's a Phillistine and he admits it...
Indoninja - How does he paint these? Does he project the picture on a wall and fill in the grids with the little swirls? - Honestly, I'm not entirely sure. All the info I looked up on him was kinda vague on the procedure. Seeing them in "teh real world" is a bit bizarre, beacuse they really do look like a big mess up close. I know that he had a crew that used to help him in the set up when he was more severly disabled, but doing what... I dunno.
RyuFu - How large are those in reality? - Big. Very, very big. Like... the size of a whole wall, big. The one of the guy with a bald head, goatee and glasses is one of his self-portraits. I BELIEVE that it was a variation of that piece that I saw at the Pittsburg Museum a few years back. It was much bigger than Andy-overblown-Warhol's "Marilyn Monroe" print on the opposite wall. I'm gonna guesstimate 12ft X 15ft.

Auto 2 for Chuck Close.
I have the use of all 4 limbs, and this guy still makes me look like i'm a retarded 3yr old on meth when I draw.

AUTO +2 Chuck Close.
My best friend has done some portraits in his style (like Close's B & W self portrait). Close's work doesn't speak to me on a personal level, but he was very talented..and talk about perseverence..

This is all very coo.
Stop being so high and mighty Kaos; it's unbefitting for a man with stubble who makes comic book art.

Oh, and Sepsis...
APW posts are suppose to be educational and entertaining. They are suppose to be introducing perhaps unknown artists to the members of Ubersite or showing praise to certain artists that are well known. The purpose of the text is simply to give a slight background to the images below. When one presents FACTS about another individual, often the writer needs sources to provide dates and names. I don't know if you just don't "approve" of this bandwagon or what, but I'm pretty sure 80% of the users here enjoy it. If you don't - don't click on anything that says APW...
