Microsoft delivered an easy to use operating system when the personal computer boom came around. Linux is a CLI with a few pretty icons (come on, you're telling me you can install linux without ever opening a shell?), Mac's are (were) for intel refuseniks / graphical designers, and the rest are all servers or long gone to the bowels of silicon heaven.
Microsoft worked.
