When I was 14, I worked at a fast food joint in a mall. My boss was a little touchy feely and seemed flamboyantly gay even though he was married with children.
His nephew and two nieces all worked there for him and while he never crossed the line, I was always a little sketched out by him.
He'd talk with his hands a lot and by talk I mean rub your shoulders and chest while talking to you. I left after a few months for greener pastures at the McDonalds down the street.
About 6 years later when I was 20, I got a job bartending and barbacking on a casino cruise.
I'd get on the boat, set up the bar, then smoke butts on the back deck while the boat chugged 13 miles out to international waters where the people could gamble and the bar could serve drinks.
When the boat was headed back, the bar would close and we'd either hang on the deck or bullshit with the guys in the kitchen. I love hanging out and bullshitting.
One of the kids that worked in the kitchen was the nephew of the hand talking flamboyantly gay manager from the fast food joint.
We were joking around about stuff we used to do at the old place of employment and as I laughed I said, "How is your uncle anyways?"
He stopped laughing right away and said that the family didn't talk to the uncle anymore.
We wanted to know why and so we kept on pestering him until he told us, in lurid detail, of how his uncle, my old boss, molested him repeatedly when he was a young teenager.
We watched as he trembled and cried and let the story come blabbering out. Everybody in the kitchen, which was like 5 guys, stood around listening as the most gut wrenching, horrible story got sobbed out of somebody that was laughing 5 minutes before.
I saw the kid crumble before my eyes. I saw the weird dishwasher guy try to hide his erection with a dishcloth.
They never reported him to the authorities. Never broke his face with a bat. Never told anybody other than immediate family.
This was a few years ago. I was walking back to my apartment from the train a few days ago and walked by a candy store. Just as I walked by, the child molester himself came walking out and went down the street.
The next day, I walked by and looked in and there he was again. He works in this candy store. this fuck is walking around a free man. never having paid his debt to society, or to his victim. What if there are other kids? or what if ther will be other kids?
I dont know what to do, or even if I should do anything. What would you do?

Welcome to the real world, where rapists and pedophiles roam free. And they always do it again.
You could try hanging around the store to see if anything happens. You could try reporting him, but unless the victim or a witness gets involved, the police won't/can't act on it.
I wonder why your friend won't step forward. It's pretty common for families to be embarrassed and decide to keep it a secret amongst themselves. If so, that's pretty sick and you should be mad at them too. I hope he's gotten help in some way because it's very likely he'll be inclined to molest children himself. Just hope there are families out there who aren't as fucked up as his and will get their child help.
Instead of slandering the guy, you could paper the neighborhood with the phone numbers for victim advocacy centers. Really though, there's nothing you can do, but be a good friend. Maybe if you talk to him enough, you can get him to realize it wasn't his fault and he shouldn't be ashamed of what happened. His family has no right to shame him into keeping quiet about something that happened to HIM, people will support him if he stands up, and by getting a conviction he will be saving other children from the same fate. It sounds like he hasn't had any support, so being a good friend would probably help him out a lot.

the statute of limitations starts running AFTER a criminal complaint is filed
the legal experts @ Uber seem to have forgotten about all the complaints that were filed against school teachers, pastors, etc with actionable dates going all the way back to the 1960's
it took the court system, and public opinion, more than 2 decades to take; remedy, off the streets and into the courtrooms
but...if he won't instigate the action on his own, due to embarrassment or whatever, nothing will happen
back in the day, as an officer, i and a few others took care of these matters "off the books"
it was nothing to be proud of but it seemed to work, at least, on a local level one by one

Now that that's over, I don't know what you should do but I do know that guy shouldn't be working in a place where children are likely to be. There was this liquor store all the neighborhood kids would go to for candy and things like that when I was growing up. The guy who ran the store molested a lot of kids for years before a friend of mine finally told her mom what was going on. He was never convicted and I'm sure there were still lots of kids who were molested after that. In the end he got what he deserved because a few years ago someone robbed the store and shot him.

I dunno, I've always been tempted to approach these people. You know, shoot the breeze for a minute, talk about how crazy the weather's been lately, then ask him what it's like to be a child molester, and what kind of insane thought process has to be in place to find a 12-year-old boy attractive. Anyway, if this is true this is how I would have handled it. I would have stalked this guy for a week and learned his habits. I would learn what he drove, where he lived, and who he associated with. After this I would make his life a living hell for the next month. Why? Not because it is justice, but because I would find extreme joy and satisfaction in doing so. If i became bored with him then I would kill him. Why? Because it is justice. Good luck.

A few years back there was a case over here where a 19 year old guy got 5 years and on the register for life for raping a 12 year old.
With good behaviour he could have been out in less than 2 years.
My point?
The 12 year old in question had big boobs. He met her in a club for over 16s only, and she had told him she was 17, he had seen her fake ID, complete with the fake name she used.
She admitted having a fake id and telling him she was 17, and insisted that all the sex was consensual, several of her and the guys friends also testified that she had told him she was 17.
Unfortunately the 'I thought she was legal' defence only applies if they are 13 or over.
So he now shows up on the register as having raped a 12 year old.
Just saying, its unlikely, but check your facts.

That way, 1)the parents in the neighbourhood are aware of the danger and will chase him out and 2) it's anonymous and covers your ass against slander or liebel charges. I would go with that.

I checked the sex offender registry before I moved into my current home and found nobody nearby. Whenever someone new moves in I check the list again. You can search by address. When the guy who was convicted for raping a 12 year old moved in I sent a nice letter to everyone on the block as well as one to the neighborhood association explaining what exactly their new neighbor had done.
He moved out six months after arriving. Not sure what exactly prompted it, but I hope what I did was part of it.
I was glad to see him go.

Damn. I think that if I were in your shoes, I would feel like I had a social obligation to do something, whatever it is. If you end up being a parent five years down the road and wondering if this guy still lives in your neighborhood, you'll kick yourself for not doing your small part to get rid of him. Can you suggest that he be investigated? I don't know what information cops need to begin an investigation, but even if they dismiss you, you'll have tried. If you can't approach it legally, you could go into the store and say something to an employee. Who cares if you look like an ass or people think you're crazy. Write "Whatever-his-name-is is a child molestor" on the wall with a Sharpie.
That's just me, though. If I knew I hadn't done everything in my power to keep some dude from touching little kids, I'd hate myself.

It is sadly extremely common.
This is the second time in the last two weeks someone has told me about being told by someone else, and in that same time 3 seperate people have talked to me about it happening to them when they were kids. I am beginning to suspect that if we caught and jailed everyone who did this sorta stuff we wouldn't be able to build jails fast enough.
And its a cycle too, most people are fine, but one of the poeple who talked to me....the things they said the way they feel, if they had kept quiet about it I could see they could've gone on to abuse in turn.
There are no easy answers, I can't see this being stopped without a substantial change in society.

Well, they can't really do anything to him without someone to accuse him, so I guess your hands are tied, retro.
I mean, you might be able to get away with violence, if your faces were covered, since you could say, "This is for "..." you sack of shit, and you know, tell him it's because he's a sick fuck. Ok, I know everyone is advocating violence, but really, the only thing you can do, is try to encourage your friend to turn his uncle in (Unless of course it's too late, I'm not sure what the statute of limitations is on this). Yes he's been through enough, but he should be made aware that someone like his uncle proabably didn't just stop with him. I mean for fuck's sake the bastard works in a candy shop.

Ok, I know everyone is advocating violence, but really, the only thing you can do, is try to encourage your friend to turn his uncle in (Unless of course it's too late, I'm not sure what the statute of limitations is on this). Yeah, I sympathize, my friend's dad was my Sunday School and he molested her and her sister. It made it kind of hard to go to Sunday School when I was a kid, since she made me swear not to tell anyone, ever. If I had been older and wiser, I probably would have told somebody.
