After the first tremor, Wayne and Sandra leapt from the car to the grass. A long crack had appeared in the driveway and the street lights tipped drunkenly.
"Are you OK Sandra?" Wayne helped her to her feet, seeing the damage of the quake.
"Yeah, just a little bruised. At least I'm not on fire or something." Sandra gave Wayne a wry smile.
The second quake took them off guard. Unable to keep their feet they collapsed into each other and onto the ground.
"We need to get inside, make sure the people in there are all right!" Wayne stood shakily on his feet and helped Sandra to the door.
A very pregnant lady looked back at them through the screen door, astonishment written clearly on her face. Wayne could see a tall man in the background, smiling.
"I don't know about you all," the man with slicked back hair said, "but I think we need to talk."
A few hours and a very heated debate later, Wayne, Sandra, and Brian all sat on the couch facing Emily.
"We can argue all we want as to how or why we have our powers. Personally, I don't even care. But this woman you know," Emily looked at Wayne and Sandra, "is obviously not good news. It sounds to me like she needs to be taught a few lessons."
No one argued with that.
When the pizza arrived, talk had turned to their specific powers and what they could do. Sandra gave the same demonstration that she had for Wayne, the wind gusting around the room eagerly, knocking over a lamp.
After ushering everyone outside, Brian showed his artistry; creating a whole zoo of creatures with fine detail. He then contained the creatures by building a wall of ice around his collection.
Emily then pointed to the ground and mouthed the words "ground tremble," making the ice zoo alive with motion. Emily quickly stopped but not before the elephant lost its trunk.
It was Wayne's turn and he was a little nervous as to what his power could do. He opened up his palm, allowing a flame to dance in the center. It grew brighter and hotter, then duller and smaller, finally fizzling out in a puff of smoke. He smiled, embarrassed at his weak display, at the others.
"Of course, that was a small display, but I didn't want anything to get out of hand."
Emily looked sternly at Wayne. "I'm sure glad you didn't, that could get expensive fast! But don't apologize to us for discretion in using your ability. I think we can all do more if we really let ourselves go."
Emily looked at her watch. "Guys, my husband will be home in about an hour with our little girl. You think we could pick this up tomorrow?"
Brian drove Wayne and Sandra to a nearby motel where he was staying.
"Sandra can have this room, we'll sleep next door." Wayne said as they lugged their bags out of the car.
They slept peacefully for the first time in a long time. Each dreamed of the "true" reason they had their abilities: honor, glory, control, power, heroism, and safety. The four of them, leading the human race to its fullest, protecting it from enemies.
After a quick breakfast Brain drove them back to Emily's house, to pick her up and practice their talents on a deserted beach.
The day was long and exhausting. Everyone was tired, but felt really good; like stretching a muscle you never knew you had. They piled into Brain's BMW and drove back to Emily's house.
Dark clouds threatening rain or worse hung over Jacksonville, condensing around a little house with toys in the yard. From the darkness Veronica emerged, heels clicking on the little path to the front door. She placed her palm on the door and watched as it vaporized, giving her access to the entire house.
The only thing of note was in the back yard, where Veronica came across an entire zoo of ice animals. Veronica was irritated at not finding anyone to take out her aggression on. She had bought a new dress and shoes, done her hair, and even gotten a manicure just for this moment. Utterly pissed, Veronica took her vengeance out on the house.
Brian pulled in front of where the house should be. A gaping hole stood where once there was a full sized basement. Toys no longer littered the yard and the ice zoo had been completely disintegrated. There was nothing, as if there had never been anything, or ever would be anything again.
Emily cried out in anguish and in pain. Her contractions had started.

somehow it seems odd to me that Veronica doesn't have much of an ability to be in the same place at the same time as other people.
