stagger, having re-read I guess it's not so much the tense that annoyed me but the way it was carried out. You wrote it in the first-person present-tense and this always makes it tricky to avoid your descriptions of events sounding chopppy and staccato. Also, every sentace seemed to follow the exact same pattern.
"I do this. I do that. I notice that this happens. That makes me feel this way. I decide this."
it just seemed to me that almost every sentance started with 'I', and I found that tiresome after a while.

of course, the problem with that tactic is if your opponent has exactly the same idea. This happened when JAck01231564561231 and I were paired off last year and both of us wrote almost identical stories about hitmen, purely because we both knew that everybody loves a hitman story, regardless of how formulaic and cliched it may be.

The other way to go about things is to shamelessly pander to your audience by writing something you KNOW will get definate votes from certain Uberites. i.e. Writing a mediocre fantasy story will get you surefire votes from people who have a passion for the genre regardless of what your opposition comes up with. Sadly, finding a pretty cool looking picture and giving it an amusing filename will also earn a couple of votes from some of the stipider voters who won't even bother to read the entries.
...Not that I would ever do such things you understand.

I've never claimed it was right, just that it is as valid as many of the other reasons people rate things the way they do. To argue against a persons way of rating where they have a preconcieved ratings is to want to get rid of all of the "auto +2" "auto -2" and variations on this site. People are going to rate based on various things, and if anyone cares enough about ratings they can make posts that play to these things.
