There's a guy in my algebra class who looks like Abraham Lincoln. Like, if you put him next to a photo of the "real" Abe, you would see some differences, but just sitting here in this plastic chair with the Russian professor explaining isolation of variables in the background, I'm pretty convinced that he is Lincoln's great-great-grandson or something. Maybe it's because I see him in profile, unless he asks a question or something and then it's like three-quarter view. The profile makes me think of him like Lincoln and the wall of the classroom could be made of copper; his penny's background. You'd think Lincoln would have been worth more.
Besides the fact that Abraham Lincoln is supposedly dead (like Tupac and Elvis, I'm on to you), I think he probably wouldn't have chosen a community college. I picture Lincoln leaning against a tree on the lawn of some prestigious university; top hat cocked at a jaunty angle whilst he immerses himself in his studies. Then, of course, he returns home to his modest but adequate hand-built log cabin and completes his studies by candlelight, or firelight, or whatever the hell kind of dim lighting was the in thing back in the day. It's a charming vision, really.
There's something ironic about the woman who sits front and center in my microbiology class. Last spring, she was in my anatomy and physiology III class, and my seatmate (the aspiring EMT with perpetually congested airways) and I referred to her as "McGee", which was short for "Tits McGee", which probably came from some movie or something originally but in this case was because she always thrust 'em up and out towards our instructor as if in a silent plea for a passing grade.
She wants to go into the healthcare field, like the rest of us, but she has these huge talons...long, fuschia, clicky claws that she picks and snaps at and drums on the lab tables. I look at my short, clipped nails and I am simultaneously filled with disgust for what bacteria or fungi may lurk beneath hers, and wonder how she can possibly type on a keyboard or pick up loose change if she were to need it at, say, a tollbooth or something.
When I went to New Orleans in February of 1999, my friend was tossed in jail under French Law for smoking a joint with a street performer and we ate at Popeye's. We at ate Popeye's first, of course; they don't let criminals get chicken on the way to booking. The girls who worked the registers there had elaborate weaves and manicures whose cost to maintain, I imagined, rivaled their weekly wages. I remember watching the girl at the register try to give me my change, resigned to scraping once-twice-thrice for each coin. She was pretty quick about it, used to it I imagine; but I bet all those wasted seconds added up to one hell of a chunk of otherwise unproductive paid worktime.
My mom always told me "you have to suffer to be beautiful". She also told me that if your boob itches, "there's a new man in town", but I'll leave that one alone for now. The suffering-for-beauty thing? She got that from her own mother. I don't buy it, really. I wasn't "into" the whole suffering thing, so I guess on some level I resigned myself to the idea of not being beautiful a long time ago. In the meantime, though, I have kept myself busy focusing my energies and attention into the world around me, my people and places and experiences and ideas and whatnot; and I think that maybe there is something beautiful to be said about that.
"You have to suffer to be beautiful."
I wonder what Abraham Lincoln would have thought about that. Would he have thought that, by that logic, all of the slaves were beautiful by default? Would he have thought that, during those moments in the dark on the dusty theater floor, he was beautiful in his suffering? Those moments before death? I guess it's a matter of personal interpretation.
Like the pros and cons of acrylic fingernails and dissection microscopes and isolation of variables from their coefficients, I guess it's a matter of personal interpretation.

It was awful.
I never got her picture; I heard some lady screaming and she was getting beat up in the parking lot so I had to go and run and save the day.

Bubba: there's more to it. Now that I am spelling it out (for lack of a better term), the joke is killed. I look like an orc, therefore I am often referred to as orc, but being also a dork I can be called a dorc.
