Dane Cook is hit or miss with me. On occasion he has some particularly funny bits but he isnt someone who can make me laugh consecutively.

Amen. Carlin and Rodney are my personal favorites.

If I had to pick a modern comic, I'd go with Brian Regan or Richard Jeni.

So very few comics are actually funny any more. Fat physical comedy is all just rehashes of stuff Fatty Arbuckle was doing 1000 years ago. Skinny: Charlie Chaplan. Facial expressions: Laurel & Hardy. It's all been done. The only area where new ground seems to be gained is in intellectual comedy. Not Dennis Miller knockoff psuedointellectual "I'm smarter than you because I looked up words you didn't", I mean Steven Wright / Emo Phillips / Brian Regan kinds of stuff that actually make you pause and consider before you decide it's funny. Just my opinion - I could be wrong.

I'd say I'm nore Louie Anderson than Chris Farley. I like newsboy hats.

See, Brad, when you try to insult me, you really gotta go for the jugular. Farley was a master of physical comedy. Calling me him is a friggin GOOD thing.

(Oh, and yes, I know I'm fat. That hasn't been a working insult for, oh, 5 years now)

-------------------

Calling Farley a "master of physical comedy" is just a nice way of saying he was an annoying fatass, a description which seems to carry over quite well.

He thinks everyone laughs with him, but they're laughing at him.

http://messageboard.tuckermax.com/showpost.php?p=344088&postcount=65

First thing's first: Dane Cook's special on HBO was an unqualified disaster because (a) it felt like he had to stretch 50 minutes of material into 90, and (b) he did it in Boston amidst a sea of mouth-breathing cephalopods who LOOOOVE him because they know someone who dated a girl who's stepdad grew up in the house next door to where Dane lived when he was in high school. Blahblahblah.

Second, that LATimes article someone posted on like the first page of this thread is everything that is wrong with criticism of the creative process, generally, and comedy specifically.

This idea that the only way to be legitimately funny and/or talented is by wrenching humor out of the clutches of suicidial depression, alienation, and troubled childhoods is fucking ridiculous. It's so fucking pretentious that to buy into it puts you on the short list of people who will go into the forced agricultural labor camps I will commission once I take over this fucking place.

The point of humor is to entertain and to generate laughter. There's no equation. There's no Right way (capital "R") to do it. If what you say and how you say it makes a lot of people laugh, it means you have the ability to be funny and convey humor. That's more than 99.99% of the idiots on this board can say for themselves.

From an objective standard, is he on par with Murphy, Pryor, Hicks, Rock? No, probably not. It's probably not even close. Is he as good as them at entertaining people and making lots of them laugh? You bet your ass he is...and that has nothing to do with Myspace or the internet or however else he markets himself.

If you don't find him funny, that's fine. He's not for everyone. Right now, I'd put him near the bottom of my Top 20 all-time favorite comics. Given the choice, I can legitimately say I would rather see a dozen or so other people perform before I saw him. But that doesn't mean he's got no talent.

I think his closest analogue in the Pantheon of Revered Comics is Jerry Seinfeld. Seinfeld's comedy had a decidedly positive bent, he laughed and smiled at his own jokes, and he talked about absolutely nothing of any import. The difference between he and Cook is that his comedy was aimed at uptight 30+ urbanites suffering from the disease of mediocrity and unimportance who lived lives where little stuff bugged them hell out of them as well. Cook's is aimed at 20-somethings who haven't learned to be completely miserable yet and haven't given up on life. Cook's audience is still hopeful, they still enjoy the little quirky things in their lives and their pasts. That's why his seemingly mindless bits about Speak n Spell or screeching tires in a parking structure resonate so strongly and generate such positive responses from audiences.

Cook does the same thing Seinfeld did only for a slightly younger generation. No one shits on Seinfeld the way they do Cook.

Ultimately, I understand why so many people get worked up about Cook's departure from the comedy of the last 25-30 years that was based on pain, suffering, alienation, despair, anger, hate. Through the lens of history, it makes Cook's comedy appear frivolous. What those people need to understand, though, is that the last 15 years (give or take) has been the first period since probably the 1920s (and maybe a small segment of years in the mid-to-late 50s) where growing up and coming of age was pretty damn easy. There hasn't been a lot of suffering, or strife, or adversity for large swaths of people across this country. So, when people in their late 30s, 40s, and 50s, see these teens and 20-somethings laugh uproariously at an anecdote from a similarly young guy about seeing a car accident for the first time, it smacks to them of emptiness and frivolity.

Well, sorry old-timers, life just doesn't suck as much as it did when you were growing up. We didn't have a depression, or a Vietnam War, or assassinations and blatant political chicanery, or segregation. We had cable TV, unparalleled economic growth, and an Oakland A's World Series Championship. Life's been pretty fucking good.

You don't have to like Dane Cook, just like young people don't have to like all those whiny middle-aged Jewish comics who complain about not getting laid. But if either of them makes some of us laugh, no one can say either of them has no talent.

I take that back. Lewis Black is just ok. Not great. Just ok. And a little annoying. Kinda like Spooner or TTOM.

On the other hand, Shlongy is like Eddie Murphy's "Delirious". Funny 20 years ago, but showing its age now as the typecast becomes played out.

Comedy is subjective. Dane Cook can be funny, but its not something I can listen to very often.

Some like Foxworthy. Others think old comedies are funny (Caddyshack, Animal House, etc). Some will never understand how funny Eddie Murphy "Delirious" was.

A lot of comedians steal from other comedians. Sometimes it's done as a tribute, but other times it's just blatantly ripping them off.

A BUNCH of people rip off Bill Hicks. I've seen Bill Maher do it. I've seen Robin Williams do it. I think I've even seen fucking Carrot Top and Pauly Shore do it.

While Hicks never achieved wide mainstream success in the States because of his in-your-face, controversial style, other comedians loved him.
