I am not sure how this is going to go down, but here goes.
I have always had an interest in the political situation in Northern Ireland and the associated troubles in the region. Part of it is a general interest in history and part of it is down to my family roots.
My Mother's side of the family is Irish Catholic while my Father's side is English Protestant, giving me a divided viewpoint on the conflicts.
What really annoyed me was the censorship that took place on British television at the time. We were not allowed to hear the voices of Sinn Fein politicians, we were not shown British soldiers on the streets and even the few film locations that were shown were carefully chosen so as not to show any "propaganda" from either side.
As an example I can show you the Music Video for The Cranberries song "Zombie" that was edited for British television http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQ6gxjD_5w4
Fortunately, I had MTV (at a time when they still had music on) and managed to see the video in it's unedited version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_o0oIHdsVw
For the first time I was able to see some of the murals and graffiti, that adorned the walls in Belfast and other areas.
There are some other murals on view in this video, but be warned, it contains some heinous crimes against fashion and some truly disturbing facial hair.

Recently of course I have been able to view these images online. It has been decided to paint over many of the "Paramilitary" murals in Belfast in particular, a decision which has angered tour guides as they have become popular tourist attractions since the success of the Good Friday Agreement.
Without further ado, the murals of Northern Ireland.

I would be fucking furious if someone painted a bad ronnie corbett pic on the side of my house as a political statement.

It was the craft skills of the UFF which let them beat Hamas in the terrorist organisation of the year awards in 2001.

How could such murderous idiots paint so well?

Pretty much my exact thoughts.

I am so glad you did this. Things were different when I stayed the week in Belfast in '98- this year, no tanks on the street, no machine guns drawn as we entered NI. And this time I only spent the weekend in Belfast, and I remember thinking how murals were ubiquitous the first time I was there, this time I only saw a few. I thought it was just because I didn't stay long enough to see them.
I'll check out your links later; this was a fine idea for a post.
