The sky through the windshield was a dull grey beast, heavy with impending snow. As it flew by above us, flakes like ashes floated past the car. My attention wandered to the open window. A river of lanes, cars, and detritus floated behind us. Tobacco smoke curled past and I remembered the cigarette in my hand. Our car rocked uneasily in its lane and I closed my eyes.

A flash of sunlight woke me up, and I knew I was still dreaming. The river had become a road, solid black, dolled up with crisp yellows and whites, flashing under a chlorine-blue sky. The sun shone on the back of my neck and I didn't mind.

A flash of teeth, unstained by wine, cigarettes and coffee, and now I was sure that I was still dreaming. Three sets of eyes sparkled like water in the sun, untouched by pain. Untouched by loss. By hate, greed, anger, or age. I was in the castle of my childhood, and my feet yearned for powder sand. I laughed, and three faces laughed with me. I wanted now... Wanted ocean air that made you cough, seaweed fights, warm soda and food smothered by sand.

Crashes of white waves welcomed us, and we ran with childish abandon over grass-laced dunes onto an untouched beach where nobody had been before. My flip flops sailed into the air behind me, and four towels floated to the sand, like the flutter of paper on the last day of school. We raced into the ocean, great plumes of water adorning our paths into the blue. I dove.
A solitary trumpet played somewhere in the distance, an underwater oddity, and Billie Holiday sang of things I didn't understand...

...Until I awoke, gasping, grasping for everything that I once had.

Not horrible. God love ya if you get this stuff to sell.

I wish for a turkey sandwich on rye bread with lettuce and mustard. And
-- and I don't want any zombie turkeys, I don't want to turn into a turkey
myself, and I don't want any other weird surprises -- you got it?
