Your face drifted outside my thoughts like the memory of a tickle at the back of my mind. I rose with a luch from my newest roost and shuffled to the back, peanut shells seeming to rise like dust clouds at my feet. I walked into the bathroom, swaying as rancid steam rose from urinal ice. As I scrubbed my hands, a distant rumble came from beyond the toilet's wooden door, followed by the all too near crack of thunder in the pub. The door splintered and two of the boys flew like a tornado in and out of sanctuary. Blurs of motion outside, and I sank into the pea-green walls and disappeared for a little while.
As the storm subsided, I wobbled back to my nest of empty bottles and glasses and relit onto my perch.
A sickly-sweet voice trickled into my ear.
-What the fuck you doing man? Why are you still here?
A frightened voice whispered back.
-I don't know.
I looked up at the bartender's face, a mangled caricature, blood drops crawling down from a gash I couldn't see, and I motioned toward a shot glass that may or may not have been mine.
My ruined throat croaked.
-Whiskey.
-You shouldn't be here... Those were your friends. The cops are on their way.
-Not yet.
-Then when?
I looked down at the bar, embarrassed, blood-red rivers bursting dams to flood my face.The shot glass that may or may not have been mine sank to the bar with a sigh and I dragged it over.
I whispered.
-I'm not leaving until I forget that face.
