There are worse things than death.
Like, being alive, for instance.
I think that the sheer and inherent annoyance and frustration involved in being a living, breathing human being is an undeniable curse. How could anyone think otherwise? From the moment we're born to the moment we die, it seems to me, we have to fight. We fight to stay alive, stay fed, stay healthy, stay likeable, stay sane, stay funny, stay rich ... whatever.
We have to always remain guarded from the infinite amount of things in life that would hurt us or threaten our assets. It's every man for himself, dog-eat-dog, kill or be killed solipsism, because you can't know with any amount of certainty that anything outside of your own self is really real.
So, all you can do is fiendishly hang on to what you can say without a doubt is real, you.
Cogito, ergo, sum.
But why? Why hang on to anything at all? That's where the construct of an almighty Dictator comes into play. God was created by man to answer the questions man himself cannot find answers to by simply analyzing his surroundings. There are inexplicable phenomena in this world that have absolutely no reasonable cause.
Life, as an example, is one.
Why are we here? It must be that we are here to please God, and to do his bidding. Well, what if we don't? What if we decide that it's not worth the effort to hang on and what if we decide that we'd rather not tediously deal with the constant temptations and pain involved in being a human? Well, then you go to hell.
What's hell?
Hell is the least attractive place ever.
It's hot, dark, morose, infinite and ever-growing. If you don't want to go to hell, then you have to believe in God and do what he wishes, and for eons and eons humans have ascribed to this and who knows how many millions of lives have been wasted trying to please a nonexistent deity (or deities). More lives have been lost in fighting wars waged on the basis of religion than those waged for any other reason.
What's remarkably saddening about all this is that no one has been able to create a succinct, explanatory take on reality that DOESN'T incorporate the existence of God, that most people find readily acceptable. In just about every acceptable worldview, there is this idea that God (or something serving as God) did something to set the stage for life and that God (or something serving as God) is actively doing something to perpetuate it.
We are then, unaccountable for our own existences.
After all, we didn't choose to be here.
We have just awakened to find ourselves lost and confused in a massive setting of ill-fitting puzzle pieces and unanswerable questions. Am I so remiss to think that this is all so unfair? If it is all just so unfair, why should I be criticized for being so cynical and angry about it all the time?
Am I not justified in my anger?
