And then there were two.

Today I am 17 (still not quite old enough for some of you guys to take me seriously... but perhaps I never will be; old stigmas die hard, eh) and will reward myself with more than a very expensive copy of "Atlas Shrugged" bought with Gift Certificates. I am going to start the final round of D-Prime Madness III!!! This round is dedicated to me. As per recent custom, I will start (right after this short paragraph) with official stats, and follow with all the commentary which I love to throw in.

Last Round Summary:

"Not What It Used To Be"
Goferforhire (http://www.ubersite.com/m/94595) wins 1.1 over DCWoody (http://www.ubersite.com/m/94577) 0.87

"Taking Chances"
JMG114 (http://www.ubersite.com/m/94556) wins 1.88 over Beano (http://www.ubersite.com/m/94527) 0.12.

Final Round:

Goferforhire is "visiting" JMG114 in the match-up for the championship.

They each have just under two weeks until the end of Friday November 4th, 2006, EST/UST time to write and submit a story with the following championship title, that I just expertly picked from those that were submitted and validated as worth-while (if I had been in the finals, it would have been random from those). Quotes are mine, not actually part of the title per se....

"We, the Living"

The submission process for this round is going to be slightly different. Upon finishing one's story, each finalist participant is not to submit his work to Ubersite, but to send me his piece at dprime.at.hotmail.com, along with his Uber username and the subject "DPMIII Finals Submission" or something along those lines (if it's not that and I miss it, your problem; I get lots of mail.)

I will then upload each piece to Ubersite in the same post, with no names given, and tell those who have read both to rate each of them on each a scale of -3 to +3, giving at least one reason for each rating.

This is the best we can do to stop meaningless ratings from entering the final round. Many will not go through this process, but the few who spend time reading both and deciding to rate both of them with cause are those who properly decide. Whoever's post has the highest average (or accumulative; seeing as both are being rated it doesn't make a difference) rating at the end of one week, will be crowned the lord of awesome as the champion of D-Prime Madness III. I will personally rate each post as well, and submit it along with everyone else's.

DO NOT SUBMIT YOUR POST TO UBERSITE YOURSELF OR REVEAL WHICH ONE IS YOURS. IF YOU DO SO YOU WILL BE DISQUALIFIED.

The finalists are not allowed to rate the posts (at least not officially.) I find it highly unlikely that either of them will be dishonest, but it would be too heart-breaking if someone won because of ratings from participants.

YOU EACH HAVE UNTIL THE END OF FRIDAY NOV 4TH TO SEND ME YOUR PIECE YOU TWO. GOOD LUCK. I SAY THAT EVEN THOUGH ONLY ONE OF YOU CAN WIN BECAUSE IF YOU'RE BOTH LUCKY IN WRITING THEM THEN THEY WILL EACH BE BETTER AND THE WINNER WILL THUS BE BETTER WHICH IS GOOD FOR ME. SO IT'S NOT "VICTORY" LUCK BUT "GOOD WRITING" LUCK WHICH I'M WISHING YOU EVEN THOUGH IT DOESN'T IMPROVE YOUR CHANCES. THE REST IS UP TO YOU. COME ON YOU TWO YOU GOT THIS FAR YOU HAVE FREEWILL YOU KNOW. DO YOUR BEST.

Analysis:

Jared, the "favorite" for the competition, defeated Beano. Beano likely suffered from some drive-by ratings, and I suggest that you evaluate his post yourself before accepting that 0.12, but it would not have made a difference, and Jared is the winner. He had a 2 until Beano gave him the historically hazardous "+1 on a perfect +2;" (I am not accusing Beano being dishonest, though.)

Unfortunately DC's well-received post containing a huge image was also rejected by much of the community because not everyone could view it. I felt sympathy for him and would not have flamed him for making an error such as that, but participants are responsible if something is wrong with their post, and I could not credit him for this. It is also impossible to tell what the ratings would have been otherwise, and who was/wasn't influenced by it, etc. So, Gofer's post, which (in my opinion) was a mid-level joke not as good as his past work, won him a place in the finals. Sorry DC.

So far, the user entering the round as the favorite has won each time. Does that mean that Jared will take it, or will Goferforhire defeat the trend in a climax? Watch in the final round of D-Prime Madness III!

I'm currently working on the format for D-Prime Madness IV, which I expect to be the ultimate D-Prime Madness. I will take the experiments of past competitions and integrate them with new ideas so that it will meet specified standards of quality and interest. My past experience will embody itself here. Look out for it in the New Year, along with a huge campaign for participation in this "historical event."

Oh okay; if you actually reviewed it 0, I respect that.

YES! Rad is correct. Their live albums are your best bet. Buy either Exit Stage Left, Rush In Rio, or Different Stages. They are all wonderful.

Yes I can, but the polite "neutral review" is to rate it the number closest to the real rating, not 0.

Can you recommend a Rush CD to buy? I bought Moving Pictures but then found out it was sort of a passing phase they went through. A few good songs on there but.

Just added to that Wikipedia article: :The season was characterized by the fact that during the Stanley Cup Finals, a man who had come back in time a few months earlier from the year 2006 in order to become a great hockey player suddenly joined the New York Rangers just before the final game, and used his great talent to score what should have been the Rangers' game winning goal. However, it was mistakenly not counted, as the referee wasn't paying attention when it was scored. This mysterious hockey player, who vanished while sulking following the game, is said to be the user DCWoody on the website Ubersite. His coming-out can be viewed here (http://www.ubersite.com/m/94723), as it took place following a coincidentally real, made-up analogy by the user D-Prime."

I even cited my source, as Wikipedia seems to think that any external website is worthy of citation, qua its "no original research" policy.

You were on the Rangers and it caused a big riot to break out, right? I may add you to this momentarily.

Same principle. It is merely a matter of degrees. Not uploading preposterous images is part of the test that is D-Prime Madness =P

I declare myself the moral winner of the 1937 Stanley Cup Championship. If I had taken the effort to build a time machiene, go back to the 30s, create a giant amount of wealth by taking modern resources back with me, and spend all of my time training to become a great hockey player, I'd have a reasonable chance of winning it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes but I DID do all that shit, and only lost because the referee didn't see my goal.

:P

The people who could see my image gave me ana verage of 1.67 and that's including Shlongy.

Therefore I am declaring myself the moral winner of D-Prime-Madness III.

Yes I'm assuming I'd have beaten whatisface, the collage which now nobody but me shall ever see, is more than 100,000 pixels of concentrated awesome

That way you can claim that you're the second best and WOULD HAVE made the finals except you were unfortunate enough to have to go up against the best writer in the semi-finals. That's why I've always cheered for whoever defeated me in any competition, whenever I'm out.

Of course this is why it's only proper to make one distinction of ranking when it comes to tournaments: the team/person who won is the best; nothing else matters.

Better luck next tournament, Beano! Start practising now.

I ask that you (everyone) do not resent my policy of "giving" myself a visible +2 when I have a steady +2 going and think the post deserves it. It's only fair.
