Well the night beat giant, the night rolled on
Bleeding black as the moonlight gave way to dawn,
And I walked with a stagger down streets of mud
As the gin burned my belly and boiled my blood,
Folding wet fists of money inside my coat
I pushed past the saloon doors and cleared my throat,
Every man has his villain and knows his vice
And a smile stole my face as the tumbling dice
Went crash on the table,
Went clack 'gainst the tin,
Con a coin if you're able,
Lucky lie if you win,
Cop the lot in a moment
Or pay the price,
You're a crow or a king when you're tumbling dice.
Sitting down at a table I spied a man
Shaking bones with the fingers of his drinking hand,
An exchange - money mine for a cup and stack
Of six wicked white witches with eyes of black,
Calling shots from the barman as the music played
Two more men joined the circle and a foursome made,
Sitting like soldiers o'er the garments of Christ
We bound Fortune and Fate with the tumbling dice.
With the women distracting and the downing drink
I stole round after round with a rattle and clink,
Yes they'd call me a liar but I'd prove them wrong
And show the sixes or fives that I said were strong,
Up again with the jangle, back down with the slam,
Round by round, accusations, round by round, to my hand
Came the cut of the cake and my share of the slice
And the breakback beat of the tumbling dice.
Serpent smoke slipped slowly past the players' eyes
Then a man drew a pistol to my surprise,
"You're a cheat and a dog," he began to shout
As I stood he continued "I've found you out,"
With a smile and a wink I raised my hands
"It's your bad luck you're mad at," I told the man,
But his arm seized my wrist and he felt the device
And then down from my sleeve came a-tumbling dice.
With their boots and their beating they knocked me flat
And I've woken in terror for the world's gone black,
From above muted hollers and the sounds of spades,
From below not a sound, just a silent grave,
Looking back on my life I can't find its worth,
And the shovels meet land and the pouring earth
Comes crash on the coffin,
Comes clack 'gainst the wood,
And I'm screaming and clawing
But it's doing no good,
All alone in the darkness
I'm paying the price,
And the fall of the dirt sounds like tumbling dice.
