I will always remember my great aunt Maria who unfortunately departed us over the weekend. Not too many know how to maintain a family unit like the Italian, but most of you may find it odd that you keep in direct contact with a great aunt or uncle, but I can name up to my 3rd cousins and even some of their spouses, etc. The point is that I always kept close with my family in that regard, especially aunt Maria. This is my mom's aunt, or my grandmother's sister and it is a complete shame to see her go at a ripe age of 89. Her birthday would have been next month on the 20th.
I can remember when aunt Maria would take my brother and I to the rose garden festival, at which time we wouldn't appreciate it because when you are six, who really cares about flowers? We would always run around and play at the pond, run in between hedges, play tag and what not, all the while aunt Maria could enjoy the roses and keep an eye on us. I think I'll be going to the rose gardens this year, perhaps when it isn't festival season. I'm sure that I'll be able to see what aunt Maria always found.
I also remember the time when I was young and mom dropped me off by myself at aunt Maria's because my brother was away on a camp trip. It was aunt Maria and I, all by ourselves and she spoiled me, even though it didn't have the outcome I thought it would. We were going to the Great Allentown Fair, which when I was younger, was actually "great." Before we left, she let me drink all the juice I wanted even though she warned me that it would make my stomach hurt. I should've listened to her, because on the way there I wound up shitting my pants, and consequently couldn't go to the fair. Nonetheless, as I look back at that, she really enjoyed the company of me, of 'me,' lil' Simon, even if I shit my pants. I don't know why, but that was something special, and the juice that she gave me was special, too, for whatever unknown reason that I'm having a hard time conveying right now.
Aunt Maria was always there at every family function, all the holiday dinners, the birthday dinners, and she made the best pesto, and frugala di cherry. Every single one of the women in an Italian family have a specialty and normally on the holidays they will cook for 2 to 3 days straight, and aunt Maria was always there up until late last year. She was present for this past Easter, July 4th, but she didn't cook. Even thought the same recipe was used, it just didn't taste the same.
And just this last year, she has been hospitalized for most of the year and I would make a point to go see her as often as I could. I only made it once every other week or so, which I thought was often enough, but apparently, no, now I know that it wasn't. We'd play canasta when I went to see her and we always had a good time. Besides her mobility, you would never know that she wasn't 100%. I wish I would have gone more often. I loved her immensely, and I still do, and some of my last times seeing her were my fondest.
The last time I went to see her she was a bit delusional and I could notice physical deterioration. It ached me, drained from my heart to see her in that way, so I did the only thing I knew how...I started smacking her around, hitting her with the crowbar that I had snuck in. I was really giving it to her, but the nurses didn't find this funny. That doesn't matter, I continued, poor aunt Maria looking me in the eyes with a thankful grin, forgiving me and pleading me to continue at the same time.
I love you aunt Maria.
