Thank you Kindanews.
If the world wants to punish for political figureheads for "war crimes", or "crimes against humanity", they could - at the very least - be fucking consistent
yup

This just in: Uberuser who named herself after the singularly most overrated and unimportant music act this decade negative rates peer who has a pretty gay name - even though she's some kind of bastardised french person, which is surely even worse than being just plain french, like how the Spaniards might look down on the Mexicans. Or Canadians on Americans, but not the french ones, like Gnarls.

Saddam goes on trial next for gassing the Kurds in the late 80's. US companies sold him the chemical components to make the gas, which were illegal to sell without an executive order. Guess which US President signed that order?
Of course, we thought he would use the gas on the Iranians in the Iran-Iraq war during the 80's (which he did) with whom we were still upset for the Iranian hostage crisis from 1979-81.
If you've seen the famous pictures of Donald Rumsfeld shaking hands with Saddam, it is from this era, when Saddam Hussein was our guy in the middle east after we lost the Shah of Iran (who committed most of the same type attrocities that Saddam did for quite a long time)
A brutal dictator is fine with US as long as he does our bidding.
On a side note, the Shah was put into power after a nationalist Iranian whose name I've forgotten was deposed by a CIA operation in the 50's led by Norman Schwarzkopf's father. (Stormin' Norman from the Gulf War, when Saddam invaded Kuwait)
When Saddam used gas on the Iranians in the 80's, Iran complained to the UN, but the US blocked any and all resolutions addressing that issue. (Because we sold it to him, and he was our guy)
This will make the next trial interesting, to say the least, if he makes it that long without being taken out.
Also interesting is how all this stuff connects. You can go back much further in the history of the region and you'll find the British and American involvement fascinating.
Frankly, the US had Saddam in a box after the first gulf war, with no-fly zones over the Kurds in the north and the Shiites in the south. He was a paper tiger, strong enough to keep Iraq together and nullify Iran, and too weak to seriously threaten anyone. Even if he had WMD, it would have been suicide to use it while the UN inspectors were there and the US forces were in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. And, as he showed when pulled out of that spider hole, Saddam Hussein has a strong desire to survive.
The sympathy of the world after 9-11 turned into its antipathy, and a real opportunity to retard the growth of terrorism as a political tactic was squandered when the entire world might have actually cooperated in doing so.
Saddam is a bastard, but he is on trial because he crossed the US, not because of any attrocities he committed.
