Is it better or more preferrable to say, "Go get your stuff and meet me back here in 10 minutes," or perhaps to say, "Go get your things and meet me back here in 10 minutes"?
A knee-jerk reaction to having had your belongings taken from you without your permission might be: "WTF!! Some fucker stole my stuff!" versus "WTF!! Some fucker took my things!".
It's the Stuff vs. Things debate and personally, I'm torn.
Don't get me wrong ... there are plusses to each:
1. Stuff is shorter a word than Things.
2. Stuff is alphabetically prior to Things.
3. Stuff can double as a verb, and then as an adjective with the addition of a lone 'y'.
but ...
1. Things can be made singular, whereas Stuff cannot.
2. Things doesn't have negative connotations like Stuff (i.e. 'stuff oozing out' or 'that stuff is gross')
3. Things is generally higher on the eloquence scale; it simply sounds more proper to say "There are a few things I need to get done," versus "There's some stuff I need to get done".
So what say you, Ubersite? There can be only one.
